View Full Version : Family plan: Upgrade one line to get $179 price, but use the G1 on my line?

I've got a family plan with 4 lines. 2 lines (mine and my girlfriends) were upgraded in May 2007, renewing for 2 years. That made my G1 upgrade price be $299 instead of $179 since I'm still in that contract.

Then I realized the other 2 lines for my parents are way older (from April 2006), and they should be eligible for the $179 upgrade price, right? So...

Think I can I upgrade one of those old lines, give them my current phone, take the G1 and put my current SIM card in it, and use it on my line? And just cancel the upgrade on my actual line?

Or will the G1 get a new SIM card with the other line's number tied to it?

It will probably use the same SIM card so that is not your problem. The problem is getting the services you want on your line. When you upgrade your parent's line, unlimited data + messages will be activated for that line and not yours.

D'oh, that's right, I didn't think about the data plan. I doubt T-Mobile would be cool enough to just let me use that line for the discounted pricing since it IS on my main plan, and put the data service on my line. Oh well.. thanks for pointing that out.

This was discussed in another thread or two. Go ahead and order it, then tell them you want to move the data plan to another line. T-Mobile will not have a problem.

Yeah, T-Mobile will be very cool about it. They don't care which line is giving them there money :D

Agreed, this is actually how I'm getting mine (my line wasn't eligable but the other one on my family plan was). I'd done it with other phones, but I did call and speak with a rep to confirm things weren't different with the G1, he said to just call them up and tell them which line the G1 data plan should be on and they'll move it over no problem.
