This is a dumb post, but i figured i'd do it anyway cuz i'm bored. :o

Ok so i'm in the process of moving from one home to another.

We're not going to have DSL for about a week so i'm basically going to be using my G1 for everything.

So i checked on my G1 to see any wifi connections and found a few that I would possibly want to use for my laptop.

The problem is, they are locked. haha..

I really wana use somebody's wifi.

ANY Solutions?

Should I go around random doors and ask neighbors? lOl

well...most Wi-Fi's are locked for a reason. Most home networks don't want others "sapping/leeching" off of them because it does and will use up bandwidth the people are paying for. Now if you should find one that's not locked/unsecured...well they deserve to be leeched since they don't have it locked down. OK...not deserve....but I wouldn't bittorrent or upload/DL large files.

I'm not advocating this though. It's like a house that's not locked. You shouldn't steal anything....but you can play with some of their stuff and watch TV on their sofa as long as you don't disturb too much of the setting to where they'd know you were there. (and for the record.....i lock my WIFI with mac addresses with all my devices.....and i don't want someone walking into my home and man-handling my blow-up dol......i mean my.....pillow)

Thanks for answering my question in depth.

I was never really informed on how that type of internet access works.

I guess it's because on my college campus it's free so i've always been in that mindset.

haha i like your analogy of playing with somebody's stuff and watching their TV. It makes sense.

I guess i'll just wait it out until my DSL comes. I'm not going to die.

Thanks.. I'm going to make sure that my DSL is set up with my access locked. ;)

Just because my door isn't locked, doesn't give you the right to come in and watch my television.

That's sorta a silly metaphor because most people would agree they don't want strangers in their home even if they forget to lock up.

The problem is we don't really have a schema for leeching wireless internet in order to make a reasonable metaphor.

There is no metaphor needed. I don't lock my internet because I don't think people should have to pay to access the internet, so I offer mine to those who happen to be able to pick it up--just like another one of my neighbors does.

That said, if you really want to be devious, find a WEP-secured wifi network and do some research . . . knowledge is power. ;)
