View Full Version : So what is everyone doing to protect their G1?
BrooklynDominic

It seems like there is huge disparity in the what people are using to cover up their G1. I'm wondering what the general consensus is? There's so many options but none seem to be that good.
Right now, I have a bodyguarz shield on the screen... and am using the stock pocket case for pocket carrying.
Let's see what everyone is doing.

The only phone cases I like are those silicone ones for the BB's. For now I have nothing but might get a BG screen protector.

I put it on with clean/washed hands...and even used the squeegee. It still has fine/minute bubbles in between. Not only that...there's "stretch marks" where i tried to shift and move the skin around. But the worst bit is the fact that it's a dust/fingerprint magnet.
Look at these pics. You can clearly see all the flaws (mind you it looks worse since i used a softbox and 2 lights for this photoshoot and it points out all the details) on the shield. I'll keep it on till i find another alternative.
I wouldn't recommend the Invisible Shield since it really isn't as "invisible" as i'd hoped. On the plus side....the screen part is smoother than other screen protectors that feel like running your finger across a rubber balloon. But where did those vertical scratches come from...i used the squeegee length-wise on the screen.

Wow that looks bad! I dont use anything except the pouch that came with it. I dont even like the screen protector...it comes off straight out the box for me. The longest I'm keeping the same phone is about 6-8 months anyway. So no need for protection.

Nadda, naked.
I've been carrying the stock pouch around but, it's bulky. So, i'll likely ditch it at some point. Or at least find a slim neoprene pouch
I DO recommend leaving the little plastic cover on the camera window though.
I would never clip anything to my belt, thats just silly looking. Another thing to look out for is lint getting into the trackball.

Nothing at all on the phone. It goes in the designated pocket, glass/buttons toward my leg. Nothing else allowed in this pocket, save maybe the odd receipt. Looks like the day I got it. --Same as my other phones, not a scratch or scuff on them.

i got a clear hard case off ebay for 5.89 free shipping. the edges are rough witha very poor harsh finish that can scuff when u wrestle it on or off. i have a best skins ever coming. this hard case is ok for the $ and i didn't have much when i ordered it. the track ball is tough to use with this thing on.

This is good to hear... I think I may have a case of scratch paranoia. Everything but the screen seems durable enough to go naked.

Did you use the liquid that comes with? Not sure how you could have gotten fingerprints on there, unless you didn't put the liquid on your fingers/hands before touching the shield surfaces....

The screen is most likely by far the most durable part on it. Think about it: If you had a piece of the screen and a piece of the case, which do you think would scratch the other? Would the glass scratch the painted plastic, or the other way around? The screen is the part I'm absolutely least concerned about. --Only issue would be from dropping it, and a skin isn't going to save it from that.

Dude...you aren't kidding. This thing picks up EVERYTHING more than it did before. I could put the phone in the attic and eat spaghetti downstairs...and somehow the sauce would materialize onto the phone now. Like i said...it's a temporary solution till i find a better skin.

I washed my hands and used the spray before applying the skins, yes. But I didn't clean off my fingerprints for the photoshoot. I wanted to show you guys how bad they show up now than before the skin. Plus it looks worse with all the lighting i used for the photos.

That's the exact reason why I took my IS off. It was catching dust from the sides of the screen protector since it doesn't fit perfectly on the screen. Now, I just use a belt pouch/case.

I have invisible shield on mine, and I am sorry to say it looks nothing like the pictures posted above. Mine looks fantastic. I had to do the back twice (I put in on one day and I didn't like it b/c there were a few bubbles so I took it off and put it back on a few days later). But for the most part, it looks like the phone came with it. I'd recommend it.

I opened the box with my G1 in it, took off the plastic that was on the back of the slider but kept the one on the touchscreen and other than that, haven't done a thing to protect it.
Got it on release day and there still hasn't even been a scuff on it. Goes in my left pant leg pocket with a Pen and maybe a USB flash drive depending on whether or not I'm heading to campus that day but nothin' other than that thankfully.
PS - those pictures almost made me cry. If my G1 ever looked like that... I'd almost beg for a new one.

i just got the white and black snapon plastic covers. i love the white one. pics from my tytn don't do it justice. i had bodyguards on the home button area, but had to remove it to get the chin piece to snap together with the back. that little film made it hard to snap the chin piece on. these cases are that precise.

I'm only using the screen protector and back protector from invisible shield. I removed the sides, top and bottom pieces because i hated how its in multiple pieces. I might return my invisible shield and get this http://www.case-mate.com/phones/htc-g1-cases/clear-armor-htc-g1
Same durability and strength as the IS and BGz but it only comes in big 3 pieces. I'm going to get a leather case for it soon once i find a good one.

If you do return it. Can you state if you have to pay the return shipping? I ask because they state that in there policy and I'd rather not deal with the hassle and let them keep the couple extra dollars.

Invisible shield all over the place. Cut out the extra cut outs from the package and used them too. I think I broke some of the wedges on the sides of the bat cover because I take it on and off one too many times.
Belt clips are ok, gets in the way for me. I like my gadgets concealed/hidden/covert.

well i got bored last night and decided to put the rest of the front on. it took about an hour to complete to my liking. there's one pesky bubble that hasn't "worked itself out" yet (if it ever will). i am happy though. i like the glossy look that it has, though it does seem to attract dust and fingerprints more easily. i'm keeping it in the oem sleeve again so that should help. i gave up on the back.
i'll post some pics tonight for those still on the fence about IS.

Its Easy! All you have to do is download a pic and set it as your wallpaper. You can even go to a photo hosting site ( such as Photobucket ) and get pics of Yemaya ( your Icon on here ) and just email it to yourself. Download it on your phone. set it as wallpaper. Done.

Of course. She's Ochuns ( la Obina dara ...La caridad Del Cobre..Our lady of Charity) in Santeria. Goddess of marriage. Mostly known as Yemaya Olokun. But has other "caminos" or "paths", such as Yemaya Olodo, Yemaya ataramagwa...and others. One of the seven African powers. In Espiritismo she's "La Virgen del Regla" .Also known as Siete sayas in the Condo religion. I know a little...wink.

when i bought the GPhone (new nickname) at my local T-Mobile store, the guy offered me the clear, plastic case they had for it. i had already seen the black/white/blue/red mobi cases in the android store and was going to go with those - until someone on here pointed out the case covers the SD card slot. not that i need to take that thing in and out all the time, but i don't want to have to remove the case when i do.
the one at the T-Mobile store does NOT cover up the slot! it's got these silly "wings" on the back that fold out, like a car with gullwing doors. these are so you can stand up the phone and watch videos. not that i would, but hey, cool. anywho, here's what it looks like!

smudge on screen left intentionally. i'll be adding those screen protectors from the store next week. i think the clear case looks sharp! my emotional center is a bit more sound now that i have the case too - not as "tender" with my phone now. :)
