Stupid question

Not my first, won't be my last: I'm going on the assumption that there is a way to download apps from the Web. OK, so I saw "Chrome" on the possible apps on this site, then did the alleged install from Major Geeks, and have no idea where it went. So, I did the same thing on the phone browser, it did nothing. The USB cable is hooked up, so I assumed that one way or another I would see it somewhere on the phone. So, bottom line, if you are trying to download/install/whatever from somewhere other than the Market app on the phone, how the heck do you actually get it onto the phone and alble to install it? Sorry, I'm used to WM6 where basically you would move the app from the desktop or wherever into the folder on the computer and then a cab. would show up on the phone's screenand you would install it.

However, if ya really still wanna know, the easiest way is:
1. Use the Browser to download the app to the phone, or download to another computer and transfer the downloaded file to the phone via USB to: /sdcard/downloads.
2. Install App Installer from Android Marketplace so you can install the application.
3. Go to 'menu>settings>applications' and check 'Unknown Sources' to allow installing of non-Market applications.
4. Open App Installer, choose and install the app you want.

Remember, this ain't friggin' Windoze. You can't download and install any old '.exe' file. Only files with '.apk' extensions are installable on your G1.

Thanks for the info. I found the browser download in the Productivity category. I think I'll take your advice and remain blissfully ignorant. I can't even find the "app installer" you referred to, either on the site or on the phone. Unknown sources is able to be and is unchecked. Not a good sign. Thanks again.

AppsInstaller is in the Tools section of the Market. Google Chrome is not in the Market. You must've downloaded it from a website.

That's a Windoze version, for Windows Mobile. Note the download is an '.exe' file, not '.apk'. Chrome for either Linux or Android is at least a few months away. But like I said before, the default Browser app is really a kind of a 'Chrome LIte' and is pretty good. I like it.

If its a true android app, you should download it (if you think its safe) by unchecking/schecking download form unknown sources or whatever it is in the applications part of main settings then click it once installed from within notification bar.

I don't know nothing (though I assume it is a possibility) about this via usb downloadin' of apps
