View Full Version : My first app will be in the market soon

So I think my app is ready for the market, It is a very simple app that I hope many will find use for.

We all know how much we hate opening the keyboard for a short Google search.

Version 1.0 of Qsearch will allow you to do a Google search with my own virtual keyboard, that's it nothing very fancy about it yet. (It was harder to code then it sounds)

*Right now I only have letters
*Youtube and maps search will come in the future
*Number and symbol keyboard layout is coming(Similar to iphone)
*It does not look good in landscape mode, I am working to disabling the keyboard completely when in layout but the app is meant for you to not open the phone at all.

To search press enter with one of the fields selected(Google for example)

I'm looking for suggestions for future release, Would a "Go" button be good next to the fields instead of an enter button?

Can you plan a keymaps version in the future, for those who don't talk American and people like me, who REALLY like DVORAK? Would that be a lot more work? I'll send you a 1GB MicroSD card if you do it! :)

Also, please post suggestions comments in this thread or in the market itself.

I work full time and this is only for fun so it's not going to be perfect.

This won't be for texting but I think I can implement the same keyboard for texting if people like it.

About the keymaps, I would have to look into it but Adding a DVORAK menu option wouldn't be to hard to do.

The app will be named Qsearch I tried to upload it but it turns out that aside from paying Google 25 bucks to give out a free app I have to now find a certificate so it looks like it won't be up today.

Would it be possible to make the keys light up as you drag your finger across them? This might help with selection. Would be really nice if the key would float up/hover up/ get larger under your finder to show which one is in use.

Possible to use search with the phone sideways without the keyboard open?

Cool app keep the coding going =)

So does it give the functionality to realize when I tap on the Google search widget on my home screen and then it will pull up the virtual keyboard, or do I have to open the application to take advantage of it? Either way, great program, and if it doesn't yet, I think the ability to tap on the widget and have the virtual keyboard automatically pop op would be great. Good work, and thank you!

It does not, I do not think Google allows app's to capture keystrokes in that way, for that I'm afraid we have to wait for there keyboard. It does let you search both google and maps from one app, so you can get rid of two shortcuts, and pretty soon I'm going to add youtube.

pretty nice . But it didn't work for me . I kept getting searchfield.com with a 404 error . Also it's not really responsive bc sometimes I would touch space but it wouldn't do anything. Maybe we should just wait till google release a vk .Still nice

Thanks, I actually noticed that and re-uploaded a new version fixing that. Now I noticed something else out of my stupidity forgetting to clean some old code up.

I will put it back up tomorrow, I get all caught up because everyone is sending great feedback so I want to update it quick but I have to make sure I test it out better in the future.

I'll post here tomorrow when it's up.

And yes, once Google release the vk I won't have a need for this anymore, although a centralized searched isn't bad....

It's up again, should not be crashing, you should be able to input text anywhere and landscape now works without opening the keyboard, just rotate the phone. Maps is now implemented.

Wow nice upgrade. But it would be cooler if we could type urls . Also how do we go back to the app with out exiting the browser?

jmejiaa
11-18-2008, 08:07 PM
what do you mean by type url's? like www.android.com and it take you there instead of searching? I can do that!

Also, just hit home and then open it again. No way of opening it over the browser.

And you could download it fine? It won't download for me :(

Yea that's a URL . Also yea I got it to download but it took hella time but not that long. That sucks that we can't re open it with out getting out of the browser. But still it's a nice app.

I can't just type in pizza like on the Google map window and get the restaurants around me. It seems to be trying to use the GPS, but I am inside. Google maps would use my most recent location, but your app gives me pizza places in New York. Kind of a long drive from Kentucky. But, it is a great start.

Thanks

agreed, I think you could take a small amount of the space between the keys away as well and make 'em a pixel or two bigger all the way around (i know nitpicky, but it would look more aesthetically pleasing.

you said you'd add youtube as a search option, why stop there? wikipedia, amazon, you could make this the be all go to search option.

I think your app has won coveted homescreen icon placement, next to the browser icon. (trust me in my small self centered world thats big, because its all folders, except market, browser and whatever current apps I think will wow my friends: wikitude, skymap and pintail being my current favorites.)

Wow, I can't believe someone beat me to posting that my update was there.

I added, youtube, made a separate screen for numbers and symbols. These are all steps I'm implementing right now in my sms program, I have it sending sms but I want to make it read contacts so you dont have to put the number. Once this is done I will post up a very early beta in the market.

It's not sending sms, that will be a seperate app, (Qsms).

I have considered those other search engines and would not be hard to do now that my basic framework is in place, I have made the code so that I can add stuff easily.

Awesome progress. Two quick things:

1.) Quick vibration feedback when clicking a key? Not sure how annoying and/or necessary this would be. I know I would like to have it, but others may not need the vibration feedback.
2.) The backspace key is still really close to the Enter key, causing it to be hit a lot. I'm staring at the keyboard now, and trying to figure out how you would lay it out wit the backspace key up and to the right of the keyboard... Hmmm.. I'll give it some more thought.

Can't wait to see future versions!

I have a suggestion.

Can you make it so a swipe, from the right side of the screen to the left, with your finger clears the text entry field?

It would be much easier then trying to hold down on the small, backspace key.

Nice job jmejiaa. Love the app. I agree with averad -- when the keys light it's hard to see them because of their size. Also, it would be nice if they "grew" in size as they were pushed...such as the iphone. Looking forward to the changes. Great job....

Congrats, you are now a big-shot! For good reason.

Hey, I have idea for the keyboard, especially Portrait mode. Could you possible do a Browser-style focus pane that follows a single touch-and-drag, so a key (or keys, I suppose) that's being hovered over gets like 1.5x as big, say, so it's easy to select the right one? I don't know if such a "focus and zoom" window function is built-into the OS and thus you'd be borrowing it, to an extent, from the Browser, but . . .

That would sweet. I would pay money for your approach to the VK even if the OS is updated with a VK, simply because having a launch-point to search across a number of different apps is cool.

How about IMDB? Probably the number one useless search out there, but you wouldn't believe how many office arguments this site settles! :D

Thanks for the hard work!

QSearch was one of the first apps that I downloaded. I also tried an Asian SMS app that has a VK and the VK in Steel. Out of the 3 VKs that I have tried, the one in QSearch is by far the best. Really, it's amazing how much better it is than the others. With the others, I think keypresses are in the 70-85% accuracy range. I'll see the key change indicating a press, but not actually get the character, I'll get one of the surrounding characters or nothing at all, but with the VK in QSearch I'd feel safe in saying that the VK accuracy is 99.5%.

Top Notch work. I'd LOVE to see the QSMS app go to Market.
