Sooo . . . I received my (first) replacement G1 from TMO yesterday b/c of the last one's numerous squeaks and wiggles. I got it less that 48 hours--props to Tmo and UPS on that!

Anyway, the G1 in the box, to my surprise, was not only dusty as hell, but had a previous part number on it as well. What's more, once I fired him/her/it up, I found that unlike you recent G1 purchasers, mine came with RC19. . . . Still! Welcome to last month, Tmo.

So, impatient as I am, I installed AnyCut and proceededid-ily to do the Device Info shortcut which allows one to manually check for android updates and, Lo . . . Tho I've completed 4 sucessful system "check-ins", and even requested specific RCs, I haven't pulled down any update notifications.

So, long story slightly shorter . . . This system refusal to update me (I had received RC30 quickly and automatically on my last device), paired with the news that there is a new SDK for an RC that's not out yet, leads me to believe that a new update is in the offing.

. . . And it won't be a minute too soon, given mine and others' problems with WiFi, EDGE, calls hanging and other SNAFUs generously granted by the RC30 Fairy, it seems!

Anyway, pure speculation on my part, any collaboration or refutation is welcome.

. . . So how do I jailbreak this thang, again? Kidding.

I don't think doing the "check for upgrade" thing really speeds up your acquisition of the updates by more than a few hours. I don't know how often the G1 checks on its own. I just looked at mine and last checkin was nearly 7 hours ago. So when your turn comes up (between automatic checkings), then a manual checkin will speed up your upgrade time by a few hours, but it won't force T-mobile to feed it to you ahead of whatever criteria they use to distribute the updates to individual users.
