I apologize in advance if this has been discussed elsewhere on the boards. I did search for what I thought were logical keywords, but found no threads about the subject. :o

Because of the limited phone memory, I would like to do a factory reset as Shaky777 details here (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f41/important-info-about-your-internal-memory-and-market-memory-usage-6548/), then just re-download the apps I want from my list. Meanwhile, I've spent quite a bit of time creating folders and dragging shortcuts into them. I don't want to have to reinvent the wheel and re-create all the folders and such.

Is there an ini file or the equivalent for the homescreen data? If so, is there a way to back it up, or do you have to have root?

You won't lose updates, contacts, email, or calendar entries. In this manner resetting a G1 is less painful that almost all other phones. What you will lose is:

1. Any kept SMS/MMS messages
2. Your custom settings on the phone (rintones, volume, WiFi definitions, etc).
3. Shortcuts and folders you've created

as it is right now anything you can't store in your sd card will be deleted. sorry i know how it feels, but this is a short term solution hoping they come out with a solution for this matter....

Thanks, Shaky. I'm not worried about anything but the home screen's pile of folders full of shortcuts. They took so long to do since I had to drag them one by one.

Do you know where Android stores the home screen's personal settings on the phone? Are they in something akin to a desktop.ini file anywhere?

I thought if I could back that configuration file up, I could restore my shortcuts and folders once I do the reset.
