I was having problems with the extreme sluggishness of the email program on the G1.
It's been so painfully slow, even on WiFi that i've taken to not even checking my email on the G1.

So I had the brilliant idea of deleting most all the emails on my phone so so i don't have to wait a full minute to see the contents of my inbox. This took quite a while, because, each email has to be deleted individually. If there is a simple way to trash 20 spams ... I haven't figured it out yet.

Sure enough the inbox loads reasonably quick now that I deleted all those extra emails.
only problem is, ALL THOSE EMAIL ARE GONE ON MY COMPUTER AS WELL.

Yup, the phone back-synched to my email account and deleted all the email from my computer.

Luckliy I didn;t empty the trash and I am able to recover the emails on my phone.

So just know
if you toss an email from your phone it will get tossed from your email client as well.

Looks like I'm not going to be using the G1 much to check my email, because if I have to wait a minute for my inbox to load its just not worth it.

I am sad to say this is one area that the sidekick was much better that the G1.

I am pretty sure there is an option to delete from server when delete from phone or to not do that.

I know it does that with the pop mail such as yahoo. Only problem I have is that it does not delete from the server and when I delete them on my phone they go in the trash but I can't empty the trash. I delete them but when I refresh the trashcan they are back.

Are you using the GMail client?

If you are talking about GMail, you need to "Archive" the old messages from your inbox, not delete them.

Archiving will make them show up under "All E-Mail", but not "Inbox", making your inbox load much quicker.

No I use AOL for email. And the email program, not the Gmail program.
