View Full Version : Return the phone just for a few sunken keys?

My phone is pretty good, judging by what i've read here. I don't have any squeaking problems with the screen and the battery case is tightly fastened. There are just a few keys on the keypad that are sunken below the normal levels, r and t. They work fine though and i'm not having any particular problem using those keys.
Do you all think i should return the phone and try to get one with all keys at the correct height? Or do i run a risk of getting a squeaky phone that outweighs this minor flaw?

Well, I'd recommend getting a replacement and TESTING the replacement before you take it home.
If you have to mail it back... well, that's anyone's game. It's really at your own risk at that point.

idk, i bought my phone from TMO over the internet, do you suppose a store would replace it?

I don't see why not so long as you have your proof of purchase. Thing is, a lot of stores don't stock G1's. Luckily I live in Los Angeles and since there's 3G coverage just about everywhere out here, the stores keep G1's in stock.

Those keys could become a problem later on. Call Tmo first and ask them how the replacement works. Ask if you get a new one or a refurb. I hate that just because an area doesnt have 3G Tmo acts like they cant sell the phone. Like the phone wont work at all without 3G service.

I have not had any problem with my phone. Getting the battery case off is a herculean task and no keys seem to have sunk. Yes the "screen" does squeak a bit but that is only when it is closed because the bottom edge plastic is scraping against the plastic above the 'menu' button. And even when the screen is closed, it only squeaks if I press on the plastic below the screen directly above the red button. I think a lot of people are pounding the hell of their phones and that's why they are breaking. Every piece of technology has to be treated with a little respect if you want it to last. Things squeak. Pieces click. Others get scratched. Keys sink. Stuff happens. My philosophy is treat it with care, live with the little teething problem and don't fix what ain't really broke!!

I just received my replacement yesterday. I ordered it due to a very loose screen and very loud squeaking problem (it was so bad when on a phone call with a client I would have to constantky appologize for the noise). The one that I received is so much better it is like night and day, but the keys are sunken in (rtdf and c are all lower). This was also an issue with my previous unit though and was not a big deal IMHO.
If you can live with the slight indent I would not run the risk of getting one with a loose scrren.
BTW my replacement was just a shell and had rc19, but I do not think it was a refurb. If it was they diid a hell of a job.

One solution for a squeaky/creaky screen is to stick a very, very narrow strip of screen protector plastic on the shell above the red button, where the bottom of the screen touches the main body of the phone when it is closed. This removes all creaks and squeaks!

this is the way i'm leaning. Thanks highfinance. I think i'll buy insurance and replace the phone if a key breaks.

Segfault, I tried all the DIY fixes and for a short time the screen stopped squeaking, but it returned. I think my previous unit was just badly built. This new unit just feels tighter and more solid also the downward tilt of the left side of the screen is not present in this one.
I think the units with squeaking problems are only going to get worse. I baby my devices, and yet mine still gradually just got more and more loose.

if you ordered it over the phone or via web, you cant return it to a store. -- I had a long discussion with a T-mobile rep about this. -- She ended up saying to go online and submit a complaint about this, if enough complain the company will possibly realize that this is a concern for multiple customers and change policy.
instead i sent it back and canceled my contract, then made my next G1 purchase at a store for easier future returns.
