View Full Version : Browsing WAP sites without automatically being redirected to the full site

The full versions of some web sites I use regularly have just too much on the screen and too much background functionality and auto-reloads to make them usable on the G1, great though the G1 browser is.

I cannot get the G1 browser to use the WAP version of the websites because (I assume) the sites detect the browser capability and automatically switch to the full version.

Is there either:

1. any way to make the standard browser fool websites into only sending WAP pages to it instead of redirecting to the full HTML/AJAX/etc website

OR

2. a different browser that could be used to achieve the same thing? A basic mobile phone type browser perhaps?

OR

3. a website akin to Skeezer that will act as an intermediary with the desired effect?

I've already tried Opera Mini, wapsilon.com and a few others but nothing is doing the job.

I've also requested the website owners support the G1 better but don't hold out much hope they'll change anything soon.

Thanks in advance for any advice or assistance received.

Until the G1 browser allows you to change the user agent setting like Safari and other browsers do, I am not sure what else you can do.

Hope I am not being over-obvious here. I am able to view the mobile site for Fox news. It is totally different URL and that could account for being able to view the site. Their URL is http://foxnews.proteus.com/ (http://foxnews.proteus.com/)It displays quite nicely on the G1 screen. The other one that works for me is Pensacola News Journal at http://m.pnj.com. Come to think of it I can view Avantgo in mobile format also. The URL for that site is http://m.avantgo.com/ui. Try www.reconwireless.com/pda (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/www.reconwireless.com/pda) and Wireless Advisor (http://www.reconwireless.com/pda/tech.html) for some WAP sites to try. Wireless Advisor (http://www.reconwireless.com/pda/tech.html) display just fine on my screen. Hope this works for you.

SOLVED!

The latest Opera Mini 4.2 downloaded from the Android Market recently has solved this problem for me - although I had to tweak the settings through a process of trial and error to get it to work.

Just an FYI, the new version of "Steel" (3rd party web browser) that's in the app market has a "user agent" setting under preferences so you can choose between mobile and desktop. I only tested it on one website but it worked great!!!
