My contract is coming up soon, and I've been eyeing these two phones for a long while now. They both are great phones, but they both also have major (at least to me) flaws that I may or may not be able to live with for the next two or so years.

The G1 has a capacitive touchscreen, which is a definite plus over the Fuze. I'm not the biggest fan of resistive touchscreens, which feel kinda cheap and not worth the price I would be paying. The Fuze, however, has a better feeling keyboard than the G1. TouchFlo 3D is cool and all, but it's gimmicky and I'd tire of it quickly. Android may be awesome, but it's not quite there yet. Would it be okay to jump on the bandwagon and hope that Google will take care of me (à la Microsoft and Zune firmware), or should I play it safe and use Windows Mobile, whose UI I may dislike but whose functionality is a little more rounded out?

(I'm your a-little-bit-above average consumer, so my needs aren't extravagant)

What are your thoughts on the Fuze versus the G1?

if the fuze is anything like the touch pro....looks similar judging from the pictures, i'd go with the g1. the touch pro feels awful in the hands, is rather small, and doesn't feel as well built.

The fuze really does feel bad in the hand! I was at radio shack, & the sales person was bragging about it, so I told him I had a G1. He said let's compare. So he pulled out the fuze and its just covered in finger prints & oil! I mean ALL OVER the phone! It looked terrible. The G1's screen just blew it away. I think the G1 doesn't get enough credit for its design. The only finger prints you get is on the screen which is easy to wipe off, but his fuze looked like he just dropped a transmission then talked on the phone for hours without washing his hands!

If you like a dying OS that is not particularly user friendly, the get the Fuze.

If you want to hot new OS that is extremely user friendly (yes, I know because I have a G1), get a G1.

Windoze Mobile sux. I will bet you money in a head-to-head, that the G1 will smoke the Fuze on Internet access speeds. I saw in one thread where some T-Mo employees put a G1 up against various smartphones, including BB, and the G1 smoked them all (always when on the same web access -- Edge or 3G).

i loved the G1 while i had it. I just think a few kinks needed to be worked out so i returned it -- i'm back with a Windows Mobile phone and it cant shake a stick at the G1's connectivity. web, email, chat youtube...all in your hand.

and if you use Gmail/gchat for everything...its even better

I was a Sprint user and avidly waiting for the Touch Pro; due to delays, it was released after the t-Mo G1. Out of curiosity I picked up a G1 to try out and went to a Sprint store a week later to look at the Touch Pro (before my 2 week T-Mo trial was up).

It took less than 5 minutes to realize how much better the G1 is than the Touch Pro- the G1 keyboard is far superior, running WM6.1 was VERY sluggish on the Touch Pro (maybe fixed with updates- which Sprint rarely releases) and it just felt cheap. I felt I would be downgrading from my former (Sprint) Treo 800w to the Touch Pro...

The Fuze is the GSM version of the Touch Pro; it has a little different form factor but it is still the same device.

I definitely am getting the same vibe from the Fuze as you guys; it's not at the same level of quality that the G1 is at.

The thing I'm probably most concerned about is whether or not my firmware will be rounded out will all its missing functionality through updates. (Can OtA really handle updates that size?) Is Google going to update Android for all the G1 users like Microsoft with its Zune firmware, or will we be left behind next year like Windows Mobile users with 6.0 who aren't allowed to update to 6.1?

window mobile releasing a new os soon i think.

i also want to try and get the Fuze.
I used to have a imported HTC diamond ( same like touch pro but without the keyboard) it was very nice and sexy.

More sexy than the G1 looks

This is what I think about the pro and cons:

Pro:
+ Back look design .. very cool diamond cut
+ More memory rams + cpu
+ Can reach 32 GB Microsd
+ TouchFlo 3D ( this is very awesome ... )
+ Has a stylus
+ Keyboard doesn't look cheap
+ Can be very customize :)

Con:
- Bulky
- battery life isn't that great .. can prob last 1 day with full usage
- expansive
- might have some sort of lag on window mobile

I think i might try to touch the fuze before i decide to sell my G1 .. i can't get 3G since im a ATT user so i think it would be a better option for me since the Fuze has 3G.

but i really like the back looks ;]

I was at a basketball game today . There was a guy walking under me (lower lever), I notice he had this sexy phone which happens to be called the fuze. I tried taking a picture of it but the guy was walking so u know how good the g1 can hadle movment when taking snaps. I'm about to turn to the fuze just bc of the sexyness.

Wow u all remember me saying I wanted to ditch the g1 for the sexy at&t fuze. Well today I decided to check it out at my local at&t store and well it was awful. its still sexy but after playing with it , the g1 blows it out the water. The touch screen is awful I guess bc I'm so used to the g1 and ipod touch that it was awful and not really responsive. I didn't know how to get to the camera but I found it and well u guest it, the camera is better then the g1 cam. The keyboard was kinda weird but I only used it for a second. The internet wasn't working bc well all the phones internet wasn't working for some reason. O I also found out it had a sylelist which wasnt really responsive when using it. The g1 wins in everything but sexyness and camera but other then that the fuze sucked. I mean if its your first touch phone then its not bad along with all the other crappy touch phones other then g1 and iphone.

Sorry for spelling I'm typeing outside of at&t on my g1.

No matter how pretty you dress up an unstable prostitute (wm) she's still going to be an unstable prostitute.

O I forgot to add that the screen was awfully small . If it had android , bigger screen and same touch response as the g1 and iPhone , It would be one amazing sexy phone . So fuze out now there's one more phone I like to try.

G1 all day... FLASH is coming soon, the apps WILL improve dramatically over the next few months, and a great 3.2" capacitive screen. No competition.

WinMo's Achille's heel is the beyond crappy memory management, that will bring it to it's knees and crash. G1 has simply awesome memory management. Once Google solves the SD apps on SD card installation issues, this thing will be unstoppable.

On the other hand there ARE many great apps on WinMo, but most are not that finger friendly (SPB's newer stuff excepted).

well my g1 was fine, but now it's acting like windows mobile.. it lags tons, takes for ever to open messeging and veiw txts. When playing music in the bkgrn it takes for ever to unlock.

Windosmobile still beats the G1 in camera and messaging. i guess if your into having a billon apps, than the g1 is good. But for sms, mms, email winmo is still superior

^^^ are you running low on memory? Also, I've noticed a lot people who text extensively report problems with lag. I only text a medium amount and have only occasional lag issues that go away after a reset. I've never had a crash/perma-freeze which FORCED me to reset the phone since I've bought it. That in itself is amazing considering my WinMo Pocket PC would crash and burn several times a day, sometimes several times an hour.

At times it felt like it wasn't even a touch screen. But the sylelist (sorry can't spell) was so sexy .
