E G or 3G with the up and down arrows is the cell tower data connection
E means Edge
G GPRS
3G is well 3G ;)
and why you would want this phone and not pay for the $25 a month unlimited data is well beyond me, the phone is practically useless without a data connection even google maps uses the data connection to pull up the maps, they are not stored locally

Ditto. Unless you live on school campus and theres wifi everywhere then its not bad.

Sucks you lost $20 bucks but, i guess this is proof you should read your manual before using...
Or maybe could have asked t-mobile. :)

Other than that does a pay-as-you-go SIM card work OK with the G1? Some people have said that a data plan is required to use the phone but I don't see why. For people who have wi-fi and make few phone calls (or use VOIP), the pay-as-you-go voice plan could save upwards of $700 a year if it works and would not be cheating T-Mobile.
What exactly did you do to disable data when wi-fi is off?

Are you sure you can disable data on the phone?
Isn't that the whole point of a "cloud" based phone?
If you don't have a data plan on Tmobile, that would make more sense as they would block data access (including GPS and Maps). Just like on my old phone, I couldn't access Tzones because I didn't pay for the service. In which case, you should be able to use WIFI and not be charged for it, as you are using internet access from a different source.
