J/w, is it that the screen just cant use it or if google left it out for patenting issues.
Also, does anyone else think their their G1 screen is much smaller than the iphone screen, or is that just me?

Well first, I'm 90% sure that the phone doesn't have the capability to use Multi-Touch, but that maybe able to be changed in the future with a firmware updated, similar to possible AD2P for Stereo Bluetooth, but someone correct me if I am wrong

Oh boy, another iPhone-envy thread.
This never gets old.

Multi-touch capability is a hardware feature. Not software. If the hardware doesn't support multi-touch, no amount of OTA's can change that.
And god damnit buy a ****ing iPhone if you want one so bad.

yea we will have multi touch, hopefully soon. our phones capable of it.
G1= 3.2" screen
iphone= 3.5" screen
not much bigger, but it does make a difference.

Chillax. This is not an iphone praising thread. I just wanted to know, before I bought my phone I heard that it ran at the same resolution as the iphone but the screen was a bit smaller, but I didnt think it would be THIS much smaller :\
Ah well.
So does it support multi touch or not? (this is a hard ware feature)
What I heard was that HTC put it in, but because Apple patented a lot of the gestures for multi touch, they could not do this because of the issues and figured it would be easier to let the developers put it in.
I also heard that the same company makes both the Iphone and the G1's screens...

From what I remember on another thread, the phone is capable of multitouch. Someone even demonstrated it on a video. If I can find the thread, I'll post it.

yes it definitely is. just do this.......go to your home screen> click and hold any app> while youre holding the app go ahead and slide another finger across the screen you will see that the app moves. which means we are multi touch capable.

Is it capable ? No. Does it support multi touch ? No.

I don't think this means that it's Muti touch. That would mean the mouse on my POS laptop is multi touch capable because it does the same thing.

The G1 isn't going to be the only phone that supports the Googles OS. See it's easier for apple to implement a multi touch screen because they only have 1 phone to support their OS. Not every android phone is going to have a touchscreen. As of this moment android does not support Multi touch, I don't believe it ever will either.

From my understanding, the device itself supports multi touch. The problem is the gestures. Apple filed for a mess of patents for this.
Also that video is not an example of multi touch. I can do the same thing with my Wind and MDA.

i think we are not far from it
apple doesnt have a patent on it... look at the microsoft surface, it has multi touch...

Yeah, those videos don't prove it or disprove it. My old HTC 6700 would do the same thing when you added another finger to it.
Apple has patents for multitouch on phones/mobile devices but not desktop. The patents are messed up if you ask me since Apple did not invent multitouch.

The G1 is capable of multi-touch as it uses the same technology as the iPhone.
The problem is that Apple holds a patent on how multi-touch is detected on the phone using such "projective capacitive touchscreen":
"The real breakthrough here, displaywise, is Apple's use of multitouch technology using a projective capacitive design," said Paul Semenza, vice president for displays at iSuppli Corp. "What we suspect they did was to use an algorithm within NXP's ARM-based controller chip (http://www.eetimes.com/news/latest/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=4J3V5KZCKINHSQSNDLSCK HA?articleID=200900718) to measure the finger touches over the display and adjust the screen content accordingly."
Apple was assigned patent application number 20060097991 for the multitouch screen technology--one of some 200 iPhone-related patents for which Apple applied. The abstract reads in part that the touch panel has "a transparent capacitive sensing medium configured to detect multiple touches or near touches that occur at the same time and at distinct locations in the plane of the touch panel and that produces distinct signals representative of the location of the touches on the plane of the touch panel for each of the multiple touches."

OK, there seems to be a lot of confusion about the G1 having multitouch, and it doesn't. The phenomena in the video is a simple vectoring issue single touch displays have when you touch two places at one. Basically, it detects that you are pushing in the middle when you push two separate points of the screen, it can't detect things such as rotation or pinch functions. If you have a tablet PC other than the Dell-Multitouch you know about this issue, but again, the G1 Does NOT have multitouch.

They got a couple of companys who own patents on multi touch on mobile devices, such as nintendo, they were granted a multi touch patent on hand held devices in 2004... theres a few other companys too...
they patent gestures for commands, not the actual act of using a multi touch screen

It's a software limitation as seen in other HTC phones.
Check this article which has a very interesting video: http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=693

The hardware does support it, the G1 is using Synaptics patented diamond pattern ClearPad sensor(you can see this on the G1 screen at a angle). And G1 is using a "Projected capacitive" touch screen, which supports multiple-finger gestures, so clearly it does support multi touch, but for some reason it was implemented.

In DreamCast's article it even states there are two types of capacative touch screens, and one which doesn't support multitouch, which the G1 uses, so again no multitouch.

Oh come on people! Of course the G1 can do multi touch. Do you really think Google would say "Eh...who needs that in the future". If they are serious about using android outside of the cell phone market as well then multi touch would be an extremely important thing. For examlpe..If you used android on a home automation system, such as a touch panel in your home, dont you think that multi touch would be crucial for many of the functions? I highly doubt google would say "no need for this fantastic tech".

The screen is the same width as the iPhone but 3/16's" shorter.
