So far, I'm really liking my G1. Sure, it has got its foibles, but so did my iPhone (which I recently lost).

There are two major issues I have with it though:

1. No transit in Google Maps!
2. My IM apps lose their connection constantly (built in gTalk app, Maverick, Meebo, etc.) even when I have five bars and am five feet away from my WiFi access point (not moving).

The first point is by (bad) decision, but the second is really frustrating. The ability to use data IM on this phone is really cool, but my phone just keeps randomly disconnecting and reconnecting even though the signal strength on both WiFi and cellular at all full strength!

Does anyone else experience this?

I had never had a problem before. The other day I got the RC30 OTA. After that I noticed I lose my connection to Gtalk when the phone goes idle. It only happens with 3G though. On edge it works fine. It must be something with that update.

Yeah something with the Update, I guess when the phone goes on standby mode, it closes all the apps so it can save battery, i guess.

yeah I feel you on the IM.

The only thing that bugs me is that there isn't an IM app that leaves you signed in even if you are disconnected for the time frame that you don't have bars.'

and the built in one doesn't tell you when you are disconnected.. lOl

so one day i signed on with another screen name on my desktop and one on my phone and it showed that i had signed in and out 25 times in the last hour..

that's why nobody was IMing me... i probably annoyed a lot of people that day LMAO...

I agree. This happens with Meebo for me. I haven't noticed this with the built in IM apps though.

if any bug google should be trying to fix, it should be that bug in the im apps

Guys, its more of a design problem than a programming one. IM protocols are designed to accomadate constant connections. A mobile phone platform is just not suited well to these applications

I have the same problem. It seems my wifi always shuts off in standby mode? Well if it doesn't my wifi indicator goes away anyhow then comes back up about a minute later. But ya all my IM never stay connected either...3g or wifi
