They are very excited t be able to bring this service to other platforms. I would assume they must have the app running on the background, not sure if it can use triangulation or straight up GPS. Nice find vreal, and welcome to the team (Been pretty hectic for the last week, not too active) :p

well on the iphone its kind of like a mini blog.

hmm when i go out i post where i am. it places a marker on a map. ur friends can see where u are on the map by clicking on the entry or picture if u posted one with it.

on the iphone it shows where u last opened the app up. it doesn't show where u are at all times. you also have control over who sees ur exact location. u can block and unblock friends.

another thing , say i go to atlantic city and i post a picture and description of what i am doing. my friends can leave a comment .

here is the loopt iphone commercial

is it android only? as in, i can only communicate/locate android friends, or will it play nicely with iPhone?

regardless...I need to find more friends...ones with an android/iPhone would be even better ;)

Loopt on Android is coming soon and the team here has their hands full developing on this wonderful and robust platform. We’ve included a sneak peek with two screenshots. On the left is the Map View of you and your friends with a roll of your friends at the bottom. Click on a friend’s image and you’ll know where that person is. On the right is the Friends List, showing you where they are, their distance from you, and what they’re doing.

Lead by 22 year-old Sam Altman, Loopt has come a long way since its original launch. This was actually a company I doubted at first because of the limitations of mobile phone at that time. With iPhone and G1, their product is starting to look more promising. The company has done a good job tackling at upcoming technologies, rather than just mature markets. While they still have much work to do before any meaningful user adoption, they are positioned pretty well to become the leader in this field.
On a side note, I think Android would be way cooler if it had a better looking UI. I sort of get an Linux feel out of it. While it works get functionally, it just doesn’t have the oooh factor of a Mac.

Very nice... I will be looking foward for this :)

Where does it get the "status" from? Is it from within the application?

I'm hoping it's tied to twitter. All my updates go there and feed facebook, etc. I'd like to avoid updating multiple things.

Pretty stalkish, I don't need my friends knowing where I am at all times. I mean seriously who would want to keep tabs on someone ?. This is definitely a good app for that crazy girlfriend who wants to track her boyfriends every move.

you get to chose when they see you.

Like, you can make it broadcast whenever you're at the bar, but not when you're home, at work, or at the mistress'....

I still think it's a little creepy :D

I thought caller ID was creepy when it first came out, now i can differentiate who is calling me by what kind of sound is comming out of my phone...

If Loopt is the first step, imagine how creepy it can get =p

I am super excited for this app. Some will ridicule this type of thing as "big brother always knowing your info/where you are", but I for one love all this networked location stuff. I just think it's very fun, cool, and comforting to know I can turn it off if I want.
