After three days of playing with my G1, I am sad to say I hate it. My friend who works at the apple store says he can get me an iphone, new, boxed, and he'll trade me if I unlock my G1. Ive already unlocked my G1 and I guess am going to trade my G1 for my Iphone.

Enjoy it. The iphone's a great phone. The G1's not for everybody. Neither is the iphone. Hope you and your friend are both happy with your new choices.

i hear ya i love the G1 it is a great phone but at times i really feel like selling it on ebay or something. i got the iphone for 80 bucks and have been playign with it (unlocked 2.1) and have noticed it doesnt have as many apps int he installer as the pre 2.0 one does which kinda makes it suck.
That has lead me to believe the phone is only as good as the apps and i see a bright future for the G1 i think it will take some time (time some people dont have) but even as is it is far better then most any phone out there.
I will stick with this G1 in hopes everything gets much better and i will most likly buy myself a G2 (if we see one) but like one of the above comments its not for every one but the same applies to every phone/car/house/color
you get the point :D
good luck to ya

The problems I had on my phone were miniscule, until I found out that after like 45 minutes of use, the right side got extremely hot! I could not deal with this so I decided to return it, to which my friend caught me when I was going to the UPS store, and we made the deal there.
Anyone know how to unlock an iphone?

I dont want to try convincing you, I respect your decision, but you could have tried exchanging it and see if the replacement unit does the same. I thought your issue with the G1 was the features/functionality.
Seeing the rate of growth of the G1 (less than 1 month old) to that of the iPhone (couple years old), you can tell that the G1 is a lot promising and has greater potential.
Good Luck!

I hope it's a first gen iPhone he's giving you, or you'll be using it on ATT, because even if there was a 3G unlock(there currently isn't), you wouldn't be able to use the 3G on t-mobiles network(ATT's 3g, and tmo's operate on different frequencies).
Theoretically, edge should work fine.

It actually is the Iphone 3G. Im fine using the EDGE network I guess. The 3G has more battery, its more slim and a whole lot of other features with that over the 2G. From a lot of googling, I found that there is, infact, a 3G unlock

Actually, right now, you're right, there is an unlock, and I completely forgot about it.
Only caveat is that it's a hardware unlock, that requires piggybacking the sim card. Not sure how much it costs.
There is, however, NO software unlock for the iphone 3g.
If you're interested with that progress though, you can check out the iphone dev blog at blog.iphone-dev.org

Okay nevermind. I dont wanna go to Iphone now because no 3g connectivity, and I dont wanna stay G1 because I just dont like the phone overall. Another main reason I dont like G1 was because I followed it for videos and music, on the music hand its okay, but for videos - the video player is extremly laggy. I hope there will be android based phones in the future that are sleek and as high quality as the iphone, if that happens I will jump on that bandwagon ASAP, but for right now, G1 is not for me :(
I guess I will return it in a few days.

This was covered in previous posts, but the video looks much better (quality and playback speed) when watching videos over WIFI and not 3G or EDGE. Something to do with the G1 detecting your connection speed and throttling it to make it load and play at a decent rate.

There is also the fact that not all videos are great quality. Youtube just started trying to have better quality videos. If you watch them on the computer as well you can tell the good ones from the bad ones. It was posted somewhere here as well.
