hi guys, for those of you are using tetherbot program to use the internet on your laptop knows how frustrating it is to type all those commands in window. i just wrote a simple batch program that will allow you to automatically execute the commands for you. problem is does anyone know where i can upload the file?
EDIT: file uploaded. after you downloaded the batch file make sure to rename your android sdk folder to "and sdk" located in your C drive.

It'd work on your Mac if you run Windows Vista as it says in the thread title. It's a Windows batch file.
Don't want Vista on your Mac? Then write a shell script that does the same thing =p

If you need to be told what you're doing... your problem runs deeper than not knowing what Tetherbot is ;). That page is pretty clear about what Tetherbot is and is not, imo.

You probably would not need it anyway... I don't intend to tether because I'm going to be using the wifi only :)

Tried the original instructions. I have successfully installed the Proxy App and can start proxy. I connect via usb, when I run cmd prompt and navigate to the directory I put the adb.exe in I type
adb forward tcp:8080 localabstract:Proxy
and get a message saying device not found
"*daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully*
error: device not found"
Have also tried adb.exe start-server
Thought I would try this, not sure where to start, downloaded a text file, what now?

ok here is what you do,
first did you rename your andriod sdk folder to "and sdk" after you have renamed your sdk folder you need to restart your computer. after your computer has been booted up connect your G1 to your computer. make sure its on "USB debugging" mode. start up the tetherbot app and tap on "start socks". after you have done this click on my batch file you have downloded and it should work! also if your using firefox 3.04 you will need to download "foxy proxy" and set up your setting there instead of setting it up in firefox. remember the host name is "localhost" port "1080"
also with my batch file you will not need to type anything. everytime you wanna start tethering, all you need to do is connect your G1 to your laptop and click on my batchfile and start your proxy setting in firefox and you should be good to go.

1st of all my app is called Proxy not Tetherbot although I did download the later version, I may need to uninstall 1st. Also I don't understand what to do with your batch file, it's just a text file, how do I run it?

you will need to uninstall the 1st version and install the new version as the port is different. the file is not a text file. it should end with the extension .bat, "Tetherbot.bat". all you do is click on it and it should run all the commands automatically. you should see a cmd window open and close by it self when you click on it. as for the renaming thing, first make sure your SDK folder is in your C drive. than you will need to rename that folder to "and sdk" do not rename your adb.exe file. make sure all your folders are in the correct location.

Still trying to get there....
Reloaded the Tetherbot app on G1, can start socks now, restated phone also.
Renamed folder to and sdk, folders all seem to be in the right place, restarted pc, installed the firefox plugin with name and port 1080
cmd window opens and closes, phone is connected
Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?

Hello, thanks for the batch file! I got everything to work and can surf on my laptop and I love it. However, I seem to get kicked off after 10 minutes or so. I tried disconnecting my phone and doing it over but when I run the batch file it says the emulator is already running. Anyone know why I lose the proxy connection and why I can't reconnect very easily? I'm running xp.
Also, does anyone know how to set up tethering to a pc that can't connect to the internet to beign with? I've got a desktop at home that I can't take to a cafe...so I think I would have to transfer the foxyproxy add-on, android sdk, and tetherbot.bat via usb. I just don't know how to add on foxyproxy via usb.
One last question - how do you get software to recognize the proxy internet connection? For example, when I open up the zune software it does not detect an internet connection although I am simultaneously surfing using foxyproxy. Also, i'd like mediacenter to download channel guide info. Thanks so much for the help!!

I'm tethering via a WiFi ad-hoc connection, which is a lot simpler. It makes your G1 appear as a WiFi router to your laptop, so you don't actually install anything on your laptop or change any settings.
All of the files you need are in a zip attached to this post:

And the shell script for easily starting and stopping it is here:

one bad thing about tethering via Wifi is that its takes a significant drain out your phones battery life. true, that it maybe easier, but i still prefer a laptop connected to the net via usb cable that way my phone stays charged. also the method you mentioned, requires you to have Root access, which is something i chose not to fool around due to the business that i am in. i need a reliable phone that stays charged so that i can take in important calls.
here is the steps i usually take when tethering the net:
start up tetherbot program on my phone.
connect the usb cable.
run my automatic batch.
open up firefox and switch to use foxy proxy.
surf the net.

Hm... WiFi tethering is actually a lot more elegant (multiple clients, anyone?). If we could do usbnet, then that would be better, but using the debugger is ugly and hackish... not that it isn't awesome. We're on the right track with true routing =p
I'd even use WiFi with the phone plugged into my USB port for additional power.

Yeah, I keep it plugged in via USB. There's another method that uses Bluetooth which I found today that might be more secure, but I haven't tried it yet.

I don't see why you could not set up a WiFi connection to your phone... unless you're concerned about unleashing an unsecured network in a sea of encrypted signals as an easy target?

Maybe I am confused...are you talking about creating a wifi signal out of thin air? Who would be providing the wifi signal for me to use? Since all the signals in my area are encrypted, I can't "borrow" any of them which is why I use tetherbot to use 3g on the compy.
Ohhh wait, are you talking about sending 3g over the air from the g1 to my compy and it would detect it as a wifi signal? That would be spectacular. I'm no developer so this is all new to me!

Your phone. lol.
I've never tried this with my phone personally, but it's no surprise that people have gotten it working. My laptop's able to share its network connection in either master (AP) mode or ad-hoc mode, and the phone's running a similar version of Linux. The procedure'd be the same, I reckon.

Yep. (Sorta, if you want to get technical.)

Yes. It makes your G1 show up as if it is a WiFi access point.
