For the longest time, updated apps would appear at the top of the list. That is no longer the case. I was bored and scrolled through the entire list. To my surprise, 11 of my apps have been updated! When I go to My Downloads, none of the updates are showing. So the only way to discover whether an app has received an update is to scroll through the ever increasing list of apps regularly. I really hope the Android Market finds a better way to handle this. Currently, it is seriously annoying and burdensome. :(

Are you searching by date? The update process sucks, Dev's pretty much upload a new version of the app and the market thinks it's a new version. The market should notify you when an installed app has been re-uploaded.
Yes, Apps like Cydia on the iPhone keep track of what's been installed and if there's a new update. It shouldn't be that hard to have something, either tied to the Android Market, or to the Manage Apps where it would check for updates. I suppose for third party, non-Android Market apps this could get to be a little tricky, but hopefully we'll get there.
