At 4:00am I got this suspicious text message from some "Symbol AFDM African Diamond Co The Stock Profiler". It was as if it was spam coming from an email. It even had a link to it. I'm starting to worry because it's being sent to my number rather than email, has me questioning the security of this phone. Did anyone else receive a message like this ?.

Not like that, but my girlfriend had someone message her out of the blue, claiming that she was messaged first by my girlfriends phone number and it included a picture.

All someone needs to spam you by text is your phone number...not sure that it represents a security issue with this phone.

Exactly, how did they get my number ?. This never happened to me with my blackberry.

cellphone numbers are public record now! you have to go to some gov site to get put on a donotcall list...

This kinda sucks but i think tmobile has security measures in place to try to prevent spam like this. Also you can stop spam if they are emailing it to your mobile number (your_mobile_number@tmomail.net) by logging into your tmobile account and there is an option there to stop emails like that.

I got the same text message, but it's not an issue with this phone as my girlfriends Blackberry Curve got the same message about an hour before I did.

guys.. it doesnt matter if the #'s are public or not. spammers dont care about bandwidth.. they don't user their own.

so they're gonna be sending spams to every # in some range...

555-331-1234
555-331-1235
555-331-1236
555-331-1237

etc.

its just carpet bombing. nothing to do with the phone

Cell phone numbers are not public! Please don't believe everything you read in an email. It is against FCC regulations for telemarketers to call cell phones. Plus, there is no "directory" of cell phone numbers.

I set my Tmobile account to reject all short-code messages. Tmobile text messages still come in, but everything else is rejected on Tmobile's side and never reaches my phone.

I had a problem with my phone number last year when I started getting hit with multiple spam text messages. I called Tmobile to complain about it, and they told me that I can reject short-code text messages. I've had it enabled and haven't had the need to turn it off yet.

yeah same thing happened to me on Sunday...some random person called me out of nowhere and told me i send them 2 text messages that same day. Don't know how thats possible because the number they had was not even on my phone and plus I had the phone all day so no one messed with it or anything...weird >_<

maybe those people are lonely and looking for a way to contact someone. wouldn't that be scary if you got a text message from your friend after finding out that your friend died a week earlier saying "HELP ME!"

Ive received a few messages. They usually have a four digit number like 4628. Thats an example. I dont open them. Since I been had unlimited text I would just delete them. Dont open them and no worries. Thats how I handle them. Thats the same for my email.

If she's autistic and has no concept of modern technology, more specifically e-mail, and even more specifically spam, then yes, that would have sucked.

meh, with advancement in communication technology, there will always be the bottom feeders, and there always be the people stupid enough to fall for them... granted its a dirty way to earn money, but to some its an easy way to get rich...

nowadays, its shockingly unbelievable how hard it is to live with a good conscience... i could easily make millions developing a "find a sex partner" site and have a huge profit stream while keeping overhead costs and capital disgustingly low

you prove my point right down to the epicenter... i get questioned for having a semi good conscience...

and no, not out of the goodness of my heart... i don't want to get rich being a smut dealer and con artist, i wouldn't be able to live with the shame of it... as hard as it may be to believe for you...

My point was if someone thought they found a goldmine, the only reason they wouldn't harvest is because they didn't have the knowledge and/or skills, not because it was on sacred territory.
