Why does the G1 Suck so BAD!!!

I've been browsing this forum for a while now, and before I start my rant, let it be known that I have had almost every new phone under the sun in the last 6-7yrs and I've had such high expectations from this phone, yet have been dissappointed to no end! Pardon the list of just manik ranting & broken english but I'm just fed up w/ this thing.

First off I hate some of the features this thing is missing! No headphone jack to listen to music on or to attach an earpiece to. I can't save pictures sent to me via MMS or any for that matter unless downloaded from my email. The camera on this thing is terrible. You have to have a tripod or frozen solid to catch anything w/ out making it blury. AND NO FLASH???? WTH man?? Battery life sucks, we'll leave that at that.

My messaging always get hung up on sending or downloading media messages & ends up locking up my messaging all together for sometimes hours at a time. Oh, AIM for the G1, it just doesn't work! It always shows up that I have no buddies on my buddy list, and when people try and send me a message through AIM 80% of the time I never get them! The case of the phone just feels very cheap. It's like some1 had an idea to build a custom programmed phone & purchased the case from walmart.

The keyboard was very wierd to get used to since I had to shift my right hand over an inch to compensate for the the roll ball & other buttons that doesn't slide w/ the display. The "GREAT" Google searchbar that is available on my homescreen never seems to search anything, it just sits there & thinks, thinks, thinks until well..... NOTHING! Then browser is fast, when it feels like working. Right now while I type this, I have no E(dge) Network or 3G right now simply b/c the phone has chosen not to pick any of it up right now. I also don't like how using this phone to it's full potential requires so many applications or steps. Some applications that I've downloaded don't even do what they say they'll do! Bottom line here after my ranting and raving, THIS PHONE SUCKS!

For all those that will say it has all the potential in the world & sor forth, that's not good enough at all! If that's the case, which it prob. is. Google should have mastered this phone first before releasing a beta & worthless version of this terrible & heavy TURD! As for what I'm going to do next, ahhhh this is very very very easy..... I'm going to go back to my old phone, yes the most underrated phone in the history of all phones.... THE SIDEKICK LX! Peace out G1 community I will now be running over my phone over & over w/ my car!

With this being the case why would you buy a phone with these feats missing (which are obviously important to you). Did you not do any research on this device before you bought it?? The truth is the graphics UI sucks, and it simply DOES NOT WORK. The BL takes forever to load, AIM will sign you out over and over again, it's delayed. The fact that it uses SMS and not data is beyond me..so no the AIM sucks. Meebo App is a step in the right direction but needs more developing.

I got the phone b/c of it being the competitor to the IPhone and b/c of it's open source "blah blah blah." (And don't say the G1 can holds it's own and Google/T-Mobile/HTC isn't aiming to take some of that marketshare away from Apple, because that's just being naive.) Hell their G1 commercial's tagline is "Everything you love about the web on your phone" Isn't the iPhone's like "Everything you love above Facebook on the palm of your hands" in on of their ads?

The sidekick is not overrated at allll! It's features are amazing compared to this hunkosh*t. You have a seperate folder for picture msgs, txt msgs, and have the option to save your sent msgs if needed. You can txt, call, mms, or tmail ppl straight from you address book w/ out holding butons or going through 10 pages of crap to get there. Just a click away. It has a simple browser, a notes log tht is easy as 123. Calendar, organizer, etc.

It's not a PDA? Why would you use a sidekick as a PDA if that isn't want you want out of it? If I needed that I'd get a touch or a blackberry. The camera & video recordings (wait the G1 doesnt have that nvm) are much better & the downloading off of the tmail is cool b/c you can save it to the SD card or your phones internal memory. Um he lives with me, I've used the phone as much as he has and played with it on a day to day basis, I'm the one who sits on the phone with customer care for them to fix his data network issues, I'm the one who listens to him bitch about how the phone sucks, only to look down at the phone and see how it has no service or data connection...yeah that's not trolling. 200 posts of contructive feedback and thought out posts, not some two worded post that bashes on someone for being a "troll". people seriously, fail to realize that no phone is perfect when it first come out!
thats why when it comes to purchasing ANY electronic device you should ALWAYS wait up to, at least 3 months to get it!

that way all the bugs and problems are worked out.
if you buy an electronic device, around the time of release
then you should always keep in the back of your mind, that theres a good chance that
the item your about to buy may be somewhat defective, or not have everything you hoped for, just yet.

just give the phone some time, it hasn't even been out for a full month yet.
and if your really thinking about leaving a g1 for a lx ...then more power to you, because the only good thing about the lx is the aim, and the keyboard

Alright I'm going to try and sum the point of this thread all up in hopefully my last post...The problem we run into with this phone is the fact the EDGE, 3G networks get dropped, leaving you with no data connection. The phone not being able to send/receive text's on time, or even use the web browser? What's the point in having this phone? I put any other T-mobile phone on top of where the G1 is and the network is just fine. So tell me if you would stand a phone that has crappy service everywhere that hinders you from being able to use basic functionality that you want out of a phone?

No one is being biased at all. I was simply stating that the hardware problems pointed out in the original post were all public knowledge before the phone was released. My only question was why would you buy a product that doesnt have what you want it to have??? If the original poster of this thread is having trouble with his obviously defective unit(i say this bcuz i own the phone and besides battery life i have had none of his problems) then he should either have his phone replaced or go get a phone that is better suited for his needs. The way i feel is if aim is such a big deal to you maybe you should have a sidekick. This is a first gen device and some of them are going to be defective and that rule goes for anything that is released. Im sorry if you expected this phone to chng ur life or bring the second coming of christ but in the end it is just a phone. Ranting and raving just because "You" got a defective phone and then saying that all G1s must be that way is just plain ignorant

The G1 rocks. I have to agree that all the complaints the OP and his brother are making were all well known about before the phone was even released. And seriously this phone has been out a couple of weeks of course there is going to be some flaws/bugs. Google is already on their 3rd update though and has already fixed several of them. I do not see complaining about the phone for reasons everyone already knows about and naming a thread "Why does the G1 SUCK SO BAD!!!!" as constructive in any shape or form. Maybe if you like the sidekick so much you should goto a sidekick forum and bash the G1? That seems like it would make alot more sense to me.

seeing as this particular posts is directly related to pretty much everything i said to your original response, heres mine...

the sidekick sucks... i'm a business user and never would use it for business... i believe it to be a childs toy, you believe it to be the end all be all of messaging devices... opinions differ, no matter how much you front your personal opinion to me i don't care...

sidekicks are locked down harder than the iphone is... applications are all offered through the crappy download catalogue, practically impossible to load cooked ROMs, i don't give a rats ass about instant messaging, the list goes on... i believe it to be a kiddie device, there are lots of people that will agree with me, and lots of people that will disagree... i didn't say that it WASNT a pda, i simply stated its a PDA for kids and dumbies...

i've used one, for over a month before i got off of it, so my opinions are not biased... i researched it PLENTY and i knew i didn't want one, but i got one for free to review, and sold it afterwards... i could do practically nothing that i REALLY wanted with the device because its a consumer device aimed at multimedia users, not me... so therefor sure i know its a great device for what it does, but it PAILS in comparison to what the g1 is and will be capable of...

so like i said, obviously you don't want a platform that has EXPANDABILITY and FLEXIBILITY... so go back to your kid's PDA and be happy with it, i don't blame you... its a tried and true series of phones

I have to agree here.

I use as my example a stairwell in my hospital that I have tried to use MANY different phones in: Sidekick 3, Sidekick LX, Sidekick '08, iPhone, HTC TyTN...NONE of them got service.

I held a phone call on my G1 in that stairwell from the 4th floor all the way to ground level and out to my car.

This phone rocks my socks off.

I use as my example a stairwell in my hospital that I have tried to use MANY different phones in: Sidekick 3, Sidekick LX, Sidekick '08, iPhone, HTC TyTN...NONE of them got service.

I held a phone call on my G1 in that stairwell from the 4th floor all the way to ground level and out to my car.

This phone rocks my socks off.

I think definetly that the networks in our area that have juste recieved 3G & all the newest updates to accomodate this phone have some glitches. The hardware things of my complaints were all asthetic & I was hoping the launcc version of the phone may indeed have a headphone jack or a better battery life, or maybe a simple flash updated onto the existing camera. Try using the focus feature on the camera the no flash part sucks but thats why this is a phone and not a camera. But if you use the Focus before you take the shot youll get some amazing pictures...

To the OP:

I believe that from what you're saying about the reliability of the device, your issues are network-stemmed, not from the device. Let me explain:

The Sidekick family, at it's peak, had a user-base of approximately one million users. The Sidekick back-end servers have nowhere near that kind of demand now.

The G1, at its launch day, had what was presumed to be 300,000 customers, all receiving their phones within a three day window of each other. Couple this many new activations of data service along with the first phone to access T-Mobile's new 3G network, and you can't even count the problems that will come across.

The G1 and the Sidekick are perfect for comparing to each other with regards to service issues, and here's why; both phones use a back-end server to supply their data connection and "push" functionality.

When you consider that the epc.tmobile.com gateway just received 300,000 new phones hammering at its door for service, you have to expect some connectivity issues until the lines cool off.

Switching from your G1 to a Sidekick device is going to be heaven, as the sidekick.voicestream.com gateway has nowhere near the traffic on it that the G1 gateway has.

Throw on top of that the fact that I think you're located in one of the markets (DC-ish) that has not only new 3G coverage, but spotty coverage at that.

This is just in response to the connectivity issues you're having, nothing else.

So, here's a scenario, and you tell me if you think it's good business.

:D It does seem so simple ,yet people keep expecting this phone to cure cancer, solve the problem of hunger in the world, and walk on water. Nothing wrong with disliking the phone, but to come on a message board and rant seems a little silly. I had ordered a BB Flip before the G1 and that thing sucked big time..however, I have not been trolling the BB boards to rant about it.

Not everyone is having issues with their G1..mine works like a charm. I get 12-15 hours of battery life(this was before the updates, BTW), my browser is fast, no problems with email or messaging. My camera has taken decent pictures..but I did my research before getting the phone, so I knew it didn't have flash or video recording. This phone was functional 2 minutes after it was out of the box and has done everything I've needed it to do. If the OP is disappointed with it, he should take it back, but I suppose it's less dramatic that way.:rolleyes:

I had a tmobile wing before this phone and i absolutely hated everything about it. before that i had a sidekick which i was content with for years except the never ending new sidekicks taht came out and made mine look like a turd. after reading on this sight though i figured out that some people really loved the wing and i was confused by that, i figure that its all by what your looking for from a phone and all that. to everyone who didnt research the phone or just read that thing might eventually come with things like a virtual keyboard and flash you should understand the eventually part. to everyone else who hates the phone.. it happends:-)

there are text message limitations, mms limitations, email limitations and so on. these features didnt become missed until we got our phones and found we couldnt live without them!

i no longer have the gphone but watch the forum to see if anything new developments have arrived, because i would like to come back to it, but google really should have worked more on this phone before releasing it.

and btw i loved my tmobile wing, sure it didnt have snazzy cool iphone like apps to use, but i could surf the web (opera browser), text with ease on a responsive and easy to use keyboard as well as virtual keyboard (touch diamond virtual keyboard app) send easily to multiple recipients, manage my contacts. wonderful mms options sending and recieving. great email client easy to use alot of features. I could sync my phone calender contacts email etc ,create ringtones and drop them in their appropriate file. my notifications were fantastic, my reminders were still there and didnt go away once cleared. copy and paste images, text links and the list goes on and on. The wing did everything except microwave my pizza.

I've been browsing this forum for a while now, and before I start my rant, let it be known that I have had almost every new phone under the sun in the last 6-7yrs and I've had such high expectations from this phone, yet have been dissappointed to no end! Pardon the list of just manik ranting & broken english but I'm just fed up w/ this thing.

First off I hate some of the features this thing is missing! No headphone jack to listen to music on or to attach an earpiece to. I can't save pictures sent to me via MMS or any for that matter unless downloaded from my email. The camera on this thing is terrible. You have to have a tripod or frozen solid to catch anything w/ out making it blury. AND NO FLASH???? WTH man?? Battery life sucks, we'll leave that at that.

My messaging always get hung up on sending or downloading media messages & ends up locking up my messaging all together for sometimes hours at a time. Oh, AIM for the G1, it just doesn't work! It always shows up that I have no buddies on my buddy list, and when people try and send me a message through AIM 80% of the time I never get them! The case of the phone just feels very cheap. It's like some1 had an idea to build a custom programmed phone & purchased the case from walmart.

The keyboard was very wierd to get used to since I had to shift my right hand over an inch to compensate for the the roll ball & other buttons that doesn't slide w/ the display. The "GREAT" Google searchbar that is available on my homescreen never seems to search anything, it just sits there & thinks, thinks, thinks until well..... NOTHING! Then browser is fast, when it feels like working. Right now while I type this, I have no E(dge) Network or 3G right now simply b/c the phone has chosen not to pick any of it up right now. I also don't like how using this phone to it's full potential requires so many applications or steps. Some applications that I've downloaded don't even do what they say they'll do! Bottom line here after my ranting and raving, THIS PHONE SUCKS!

For all those that will say it has all the potential in the world & sor forth, that's not good enough at all! If that's the case, which it prob. is. Google should have mastered this phone first before releasing a beta & worthless version of this terrible & heavy TURD! As for what I'm going to do next, ahhhh this is very very very easy..... I'm going to go back to my old phone, yes the most underrated phone in the history of all phones.... THE SIDEKICK LX! Peace out G1 community I will now be running over my phone over & over w/ my car!

OK, enough with the babies on here crying about all the "flaws" the G1 has, 1st off the G1 runs an OPEN-SOURCE OS, I know many of you babies probably don't know what OPEN-SOURCE means so why not do some research before you purchase an open-source phone, it will only get better from here, the 3G network isnt the best in the world at THE TIME, but it is T-Mobile's 1st attempt with 3G so did you expect it to be PERFECT?? The camera is 3 Megapixels, how is that terrible???? Its a phone camera not a Digital SLR, of course it will be blurry if you move, even an SLR is blurry if you move, has no 3.5mm stereo headphone jack, get a damn adapter! The apps you downloaded don't help, guess you downloaded the wrong ones, and they will not bring out the amazing apps until there is a fee to purchase them and of course you babies will complain then cuz there is a fee! This is the 1st version of Android, it is in its infant stages of course it wont be perfect, thats like saying the Windows OS was perfect when it came out, if that were the case there wouldnt be a Windows VISTA out now, we would still be on the same OS that 1st came out for Windows, and last but not least, the people who buy a G1 with no data plan and complain cuz they can't get pictures etc... are you a complete idiot!! The whole purpose of this phone is to be able to use the 3G network, when you buy the phone they tell you this!! you might as well go buy a freakin Motorola Razr if your not gonna use the G1 to its full capabilities! OK, enough with the babies on here crying about all the "flaws" the G1 has, 1st off the G1 runs an OPEN-SOURCE OS, I know many of you babies probably don't know what OPEN-SOURCE means so why not do some research before you purchase an open-source phone, it will only get better from here, the 3G network isnt the best in the world at THE TIME, but it is T-Mobile's 1st attempt with 3G so did you expect it to be PERFECT?? The camera is 3 Megapixels, how is that terrible???? Its a phone camera not a Digital SLR, of course it will be blurry if you move, even an SLR is blurry if you move, has no 3.5mm stereo headphone jack, get a damn adapter! The apps you downloaded don't help, guess you downloaded the wrong ones, and they will not bring out the amazing apps until there is a fee to purchase them and of course you babies will complain then cuz there is a fee! This is the 1st version of Android, it is in its infant stages of course it wont be perfect, thats like saying the Windows OS was perfect when it came out, if that were the case there wouldnt be a Windows VISTA out now, we would still be on the same OS that 1st came out for Windows, and last but not least, the people who buy a G1 with no data plan and complain cuz they can't get pictures etc... are you a complete idiot!! The whole purpose of this phone is to be able to use the 3G network, when you buy the phone they tell you this!! you might as well go buy a freakin Motorola Razr if your not gonna use the G1 to its full capabilities! I don't know what makes people on forums jump on here and make assumptions about people they don't know but I made the OP fully aware of all these problems...Open-source? Yeah, what's that..I have no clue..:rolleyes: BTW terrible Windows OS analogy..cause technology doesnt change or anything and we're still using primitive computers, and bricks for cell phones...It's been hit or miss for this thread but I guess it's been mostly MISS and DON'T see the points that are trying to be made by OP..bottom line, don't lack basic feature's that other phones have today and have a NON-practical UI..let me go through 100 button presses to navigate a webpage or send an MMS message...when it wants to go through that is :cool:

To send an MMS message I do the following:
Click Messaging from the home screen, click New Message, type in who I want to send it to, type in what I want to send, hit menu and then attach to put in pictures/sounds/video anything else.
Then I click send.
And it takes about 5 seconds to send.

The browser? Even simpler. I press "Browser" from the home page, and voila, I'm at a webpage. Want to go to another page? I just begin typing the url and press enter and within 20 seconds (usually only 3-5 if I'm on 3G) I'm there.

The G1 has every single feature the Sidekick could have and then some. Not to mention it's open source (oh wait, you don't know what that means... sigh) so it can be added on to indefinitely.

I don't know where you're getting this "doesn't send text messages fast" thing from. When I press send, my friend gets the message nearly instantly. Sometimes I will literally send my message and then 5-6 seconds later (depending on how long it took for my friend to read it and then type a reply) I will get a reply.

I have also NEVER had a connection issue. I live in the Dallas, Texas area and everywhere I go I have a strong 3G signal or if I'm inside sometimes I only have EDGE. The only time I have never had signal is inside my school, which is nothing strange since not a single person I know gets signal there.

I honestly think your phone is defective. Either than or you're both just stupid and don't know how to operate a device that isn't made for kids.

The IM app is a little wonky, but it's really not hard to download a new app such as Meebo, or perhaps wait for a new app to come out.

And in closing, as others have said, the features of this phone (no flash, no 3.5mm, small battery) were well publicized months before the phone was released. To not do your research about the phone, or to think those features would magically change with no reason to think so, is just foolish.

okay first off the phone just came out and it takes some time to get everything together for these phones. give it a couple weeks. second, most of what everyone is listing as problems is not the phone itself but the service. call tmobile and have them whipe your bottom and put baby powder to get rid of that nasty rash k?

MMS steps to take...the fact that it asks u if u want to resize the pic everything u wanna send a picture is annoying...the browser..if u want to stop the page from loading it takes at least 4 button pushes...by then the page you want to stop loading is already loaded...

blah, I had a sidekick, what an awful phone, talk about never getting texts and just getting digital signal was a feat in itself. I don't think the g1 is perfect yet, but with my existing relationship with tmobile, it's a great phone. If your at the end of your contract, the iphone is great, but it has its share of problems too.

Time to wait and see how great this phone can be, kinda wish the screen was bigger, but I knew that when I bought it..otherwise, to me, it's incredibly user friendly and fun, of course, I don't use aim, so that might be the secret.

I'm pretty happy with my g1 as well. Of course there are things I would like improved but so far its been great.

Yes, battery life isn't great, but its manageable.

I work at a computer all day, so when I'm at my desk, I keep my g1 charged using the usb charger. I have a car charger (bundled with the costco g1), so when i'm in my car, I keep it charged as well. So battery life isn't a huge issue for me.

things i dont like about my g1, it creaks a lot, the screen doesnt align straight when closed, no trackball sensitivity adjustment and no trackball light, keys on keyboard could be raised a bit for more tactile feel, no keyboard illumination time out adjustment, led status light isn't flush with phone so at certain angles it's not viewable, no LED flash for camera, GPS is slow and inaccurate, limited to installing apps only on the internal phone memory, speaker is weak, no video capture capability.

The phone itself is great...gtalk is a more friendly interface than AIM/Yahoo etc... GPS does leave something to be desired, but it doesn't advertise itself as a replacement Garmin or Tom-Tom. I haven't had the screen issues or squeaking, but had similar issues with my Blast. The Sidekick just completely sucked. G1 is a a gen 1 Android phone. The issues are to be expected with any new device. Crap a decade later MS XP is just now getting to be a stable platform. Google is a better developer by far than MS but there are oversights with any new product. The only thing lacking is TMO infrastructure. If I could take my phone to AT&T I'd be 100% happy.

He bitched about everything to everyone who worked there -- very rude dewd of the first order -- an a**hole super deluxe. When some of his family members came by, it was obvious he couldn't get along with them either.

For the record, my personal G1 is t*ts up -- great device. No problems at all. Works great, and actually exceeds my expectations. Keeps getting better too as I find new useful applications in the Market and get more adept at using it.

I will agree with the first post to a certain extent. I thought it was a fun phone to play with ( I didnt do my research before I got my G1 but I was smart and got it used ). Some things I felt was just kind of odd with the phone like it wasnt fully developed when it was fully put on the market. Here was some problems I had, if you can help let me know.

One major thing for me is that I am a neat freak, I like things to be organized and I like to manage my space on the phone to make it go a little faster. Simple example, I have hooked my phone up to my PC (the SD card actually, you cant access the phone without rooting like a blackberry) and created a folder called "pictures". Inside this folder I have created two more folders called "art" and "photos". When I open the gallery on my phone it shows me three folders instead of only two. It shows me my "art" folder, "photos" folder and a folder called "all pictures" which is all my photos and art all in one folder, basically duplicating all my pictures atleast once. It also does this when downloading pictures off the web. Instead of letting me choose a download path straight to the art folder (which my blackberry does) it creates a new folder in the gallery called downloads which contains the picture and it also puts the picture in the all pictures folder. So I have two of the safe.... If I erase the picture from any one of the given folders then its gone forever. What is the purpose of this? Or is it just a bug that no one thought about before charging people a handfull of 100s. "why clock widgets when the time is displayed in the upper right corner on every app?" The email bug kind of bothered me to. I have always used hotmail (lol hot mail) so this was the service I had pushed to my phone. The problem was that you could not delete the email completely from your phone with out shutting down the account and setting it up again. Every one said that it would be fixed in the update or the brownie or cupcake (what ever its called) but it is possible that the G1 will not see a 2.0. Just like how T-Mobile kinda brushed the sidekick under the rug. And last, it gives you tons of room to create widgest and app shortcuts on the home scree....but, seems like the more apps I download the slower it gets and creating shortcuts make it worse. So I have four empty faces on the home screen becouse I dont want to slow my phone down.
But I think its a neet phone and the interface is realy cool. But yea, I guess I dont really hate it as much as the other guy. But I miss my old school blackberry 8310. Cool thanx
