Hello everyone

This is my first post, I joined a few days ago after ordering a Tmobile G1 from the USA on ebay, for use here in the UK. I was wondering if you guys could clear up a few things for me?

Will I be able to access the Android Market and use the phone to its full potential on the UK Tmobile network? I have a web n walk add on.

What about OTA updates? Will my G1 receive them just like a UK version would?

Are there any problems I am likely to encounter with a USA G1 over here in the UK?

Any help would be highly appreciated and would just like to say this is a great site, I've been reading a lot of comments and news here over the last few days. Very useful. :)

Thanks in advance.

Not to scare you, brother, but I'm not sure it'll work with your SIM card at all. What's more, isn't Tmo's HSPDA/3G frequency unique for US phones to the US--in other words, the phone is programmed only to work with 3G on this side of the pond?

You've probably done your homework on all these issues and more, but I'll cross my fingers for you nonetheless ;)

T-Mobile actually works on European frequency when it comes to 3G network.
Sim Card wise, the phone will work as long as it is SIM-unlocked.

It should work with your UK TMo SIM.
APN's should be in place and 3G will work. No need to change these.
Market for you will be the US market. UK market will only work with UK branded handsets. And you can't choose which market to use (would be a nice feature though).
OTA is ok, as long as you have syncing setup. I've noticed that if I disable the sync, I don't get the update. After I setup the sync, it takes about 1 day for it to come in.

Cheers,
C.

Wait..there is a US market and a UK one? How come I've seen applications for UK people in the market then? Am I missing something? That seems pretty silly they'd do that (that's not to say they aren't doing it). But I could have sworn I've heard UK people using the meebo application in the market.

Woah so many replies! Awesome  Can't thank you guys enough for taking the time to reply, thank you nonetheless. :D

I'm glad to hear that it will work but wondering if I rushed in to it and maybe should have waited for a UK G1.

What will be the difference between the USA and UK Android Market? Is the Android Market the only way you can download software or can it be done manually from other sites? For example WinMo uses CAB files, you simply transfer to the device and run it. Not sure how its done on the Android platform.

So I'm guessing I'm going to have to purchase an unlock code for about £10 to sim unlock the G1, even though I'll be using it on the Tmobile UK network, please correct me if I'm wrong. Either way I'll find out tomorrow if it all works or not as it will be delivered (hopefully)!

Really guys, thanks very much for your comments, I feel a lot at ease now.

Cheers and leave more comments, dont be shy!

You don't need to unlock if you want to use it with same network ie T-Mobile.

Okay got G1 and using it right now to post this message. So far I am shocked at how brilliant this phone is, the touch screen is just amazing and so sensitive. New to capacitive screen as I've always had HTC winmo devices and they all had resistive screens! Sure the G1 has flaws like the browsing is a bit flaky but I am getting use to it and I'm sure these issues wll be fixed later. Weldone Google, HTC and Tmobile..

It worked straight out the box, I didn't have to sim unlock and was even able to download a few cool apps from the Android Market without any problems.

I seriously like this device and can't put it down, worth all the hassle, wait and every penny!

Thanks once again to you all for helping me out, highly appreciated.
