Then I guess you also hate the sentence, "Jailbreaking the gPhone." :p

Seriously. The G1 does not need to be "jailbroken", because it is already completely open. I think the term "rooted" better suits it, anything besides jailbreaking.

I didn't like it at first because the G1 wasn't "jailed" to begin with... but after RC30 I think the term fits as a glove...

YES! I'm not the only one irked about calling it this...

Can't we go back to calling it "hacking" even though that technically isn't the correct term either?

Any elimination of iPhone related terms has my vote.

hhaa breathe easy peeps. its just a phone haaaaaaaaa

seriously though i don't get though whole excitement over the rooted thing. the phone is open source so what added benefits do we get because of it?

The added benefit is the ability to modify and change any thing we want to on the phone. If you dont have root, you can't even delete the stock ringtones that came on the phone.

I hear people refer to 'jailbreaking' their phones by getting the unlock code from their provider. So, I think jailbreak is growing into the term used for this stuff whether it is Apple related or not. Hacking is a term most people aren't comfortable with because the cloud surrounding it.

seriously i never thought of that. any idea where i can find those stock ringtones in the file system? same with the wallpapers? lol. Any way to free up storage space is good to me, even if only 3mb . I may make a copy of my whole / directory onto my SD card. im pretty sure 3gb free space could hold it

Cp is not installed on android. You can however us dd to copy files. You can reinstall cp by installing busybox, but you need root for that :)

no, that is not jailbreaking... that is simply unlocking the phone...

blame the iphone for this term to be popularized... in basic terms, the OS was hacked to allow full access so third party applications could be installed, hence the installer app pre app store...

granted the apple app store for the iphone isn't exactly a hard idea to come up with, but the community did it way before apple did

Oh, I understand. I don't use the term jailbreak at all. But I have heard tons of people refer to jailbreaking their phone when all they are doing is unlocking it. People who got t-mobile to unlock their phone to use on another provider have referred to their phone like this. I have never used it but that is one reason the term is basically being used for anything dealing with having the phone do something it wasn't originally allowed to (like use on another carrier, etc). Right or wrong, I think the term has grown enough it will stay.

The company I work for owns www.jailbreak.com (they owned it several years before the iPhone was released) and the domain went from making a few dollars every couple of months to making a few hundred a month getting thousands of visitors a day.
