I'm finally giving up on my G1, and going to buy a new phone. I'm sticking with Magenta because the price plan difference is just too significant and I've been relatively satisfied so far.
So, any suggestions on current T-mobile Android phones, or ones that are on the horizon that would be worth waiting for?

Totally depends on what you are looking for in a device..
If you want a physical keyboard, the myTouch slide 4g is a great device. If you are OK with all touchscreen the Sensation is good also. Both of those devices have the HTC sense overlay. Magenta will be getting the Samsung Galaxy 2 soon. That has a Samsung overlay. The overlays add to the standard Android (vanilla) interface.
I wouldn't let that discourage you from any of the choices tho. There's always root. And IMO HTC is much easier to root, and usually will have more custom rom choices : )

Choosing a new handset is all about preference. I owned the G1, and loved it! In fact, every android I've owned til my current was HTC. Why do I say this? My current is the LG P-999, also known as the Tmo G2x. And I don't care what anyone says, this phone ROCKS! Should you get it because I love it, no. My point is, all the manufacturers have solid handsets out there, but you have to decide what you're looking for.
I'm guessing if you've made it this long w/your G1, you don't care about the "latest and greatest" but looking more for a solid, all around device that will still be valid a couple years down the road. Of course w/rooting, there's almost always life left in an android handset. Dual processors are all the rage, but are they really worth it? Probably not. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but w/overclocking (tread carefully) singles can keep up w/the dual's and anyways, we all know how quickly technology moves.
You will want internal memory. Sure, SD cards rock, but having internal capacity makes a difference, especially as we move forward.
Now let's get to screen size. Yeah, I know the saying, but in this case it does. Well, maybe not quite in the way you're thinking. I watch movies on mine, but generally use the HDMI and connect it to a TV. I'll probably never go w/a larger screen than a 4.3'. If I want larger, I'm getting a tablet!
Finally your build! You want Vanilla or Manufacturer. Easy for me, I'm going to root and go w/a custom ROM anyway. So it doesn't matter to me, but I'm experienced and not easily skairt by complicated unlocking procedures. Haven't bricked a handset yet and that includes a couple iPhone's I've jail broke and run android on! If you're not going to root, look into what mfg offers what. There are a lot of good UI's out there, again, find your flavor.
Then there's all the cosmetics, and yes, I include physical keyboards here. Honestly w/some of the apk's out there (swype, swift x, etc) it's easy to ween yourself off the need for that tiny keyboard. If I can get my Mom away from it, and actually like it better, ANYONE can escape that monkey!
Yeah, a long post, but if you've made it this far the, well, congrats I guess, cause you sure ain't winning a kewpie doll or anything!

I had the G2X and returned it almost immediatley, unless they done some what better with quality control I would stay away from it. I am currently running CyanMod on my HTC Sensation, which is an amazing phome. Speaking of amazing, T-Mobile is releasing the Amazw 4G with a 1.5Ghz processor. What ever you chose just make sure that you're happy with it.

Yeah, some ppl said they had problems w/the G2x. I myself never had an issue. I love mine! Currently running CM7 nightlies on it, but considering I got it when it 1st came out, I ran stock for a while before my initial flash, which was actually Bionix then tried Eaglesblood. Point being, if you can find a piece of tech hardware out there that no one has issues with, then you, my friend, have found a rock.
The G2x never became mainstream, so LG gave up on it. But ask me, and I'll say AWESOME PHONE! What it comes down to is perception as to whether or not you like a phone. I have a friend that had got a Sensation who had nothing but issues and with the replacement. I believe he was the exception and not the rule, but in his opinion, well I can't really quote him on here due to language, but you get my point.
I believe I stated though, he was on the right track by already looking at the Galaxy S II. The Amaze looks good as well, but if you're just about to get into a new handset, you shouldn't be looking at handsets that are more than a month old. The Sensation, G2x or any other "older handset" is just going to get you behind the curve. Viking needs to look into the plethora of new handsets that are coming out, better screens, bigger batteries, advanced camera functions [Amaze has some AWESOME things to offer here, HDR being the most attractive imho] etc. He needs to look around, I'd like to see our Device area expand, but a good fallback is phonescoop.
Good luck Viking, keep us posted as to your choice. I'm especially interested to hear your thoughts coming from a long line of iPhones!

I personally own the myTouch 4G Slide. Ironically, I don't even use it for the keyboard but I do use it for the camera. I am probably what most would call a power user and my personal battery life with the phone is hit or miss. Even though the whole G2x update debacle happened, I'd still recommend it and miss it lately because the phone was a real powerhouse and had much better battery life than what I am getting now.

As of right now, I don't think anyone knows definitively. However if you're one for rumors, there was a poem tweeted that said it would be GSM, Wimax, and LTE so that hopefully means everyone can get their vanilla Android fix.
