View Full Version : How do you keep track of apps needing updating???
There was a previous post, where someone said that you can easily find out which of your apps from the Android Market are outdated, buy going to the Installed Apps section (or Downloaded apps, I forget what it's called) in the Market program, and if the app says "Installed", it's the latest version, and if it says "Free", there's an updated version which you can download.
Hasn't worked for me.
EVERY program in my Downloaded section says "Installed", and if I highlight it, I can read what version number it's on.
For example, I happened to see Mem was up to version 1.0.3 (I believe, doesn't really matter). I had to go to my Downloaded section, scroll through all of the apps I've installed until I found Mem, highlight it (still said "Installed", not "Free") and read the version number.
Once I did that, I saw that it was version 1.0.1.
BACK to the NEW section, FIND Mem AGAIN, download it over the old version, and I'm now up to speed with the latest version of Mem.
NOT the easiest thing to do! Who knows what version any of our programs are currently on??? Who knows when a NEW version has been released?
I'm not going into Market every day, so it's not like i can simply check the latest releases.
Anyone know of an easy way to be able to see what apps we use have new versions? (A few have a "Check for new update" buttons, but not most)
Does this bother anyone else, or is there an easy option I"m overlooking?
Thanks!

I may be an exception to the norm here, because I'm an app-aholic... So I check the app store about once every hour or two... So I know when something I have is updated... In the normal app store (not "My Downloads"), if you have something installed, and up to date, it will say "installed", if not it will say "free". Easy enough if you check the market as often as I do.
Back in the beginning... I can't for the life of me remember which it was now... but one app I started alerted me that there was a new version. All apps *should* do this... But most don't.

developers should write update checks into their apps..

mixpix405, same here. Check in the am during coffee/cig on the patio then after shower; then before driving to work, then at work, then during break...
U know it's freaky, but this is my first addiction since George's coke, so...

Problem solved!
I'll just send YOU a list of the apps I have installed, and you can text message me when any of them are updated!
Seriously, after posting, I realized that if I browsed the Market, NOT in the Downloaded section, any installed apps I've downloaded which say "Free" instead of "Installed" would be those I need to update.
However, I read somewhere that there are now OVER 200 apps, NOT including Games! That's after, what? Two and a half, three weeks since release?
When there are thousands of apps, I'm not sure scrolling through all of them, searching for those you've downloaded to see if they've been updated, is the easiest way to keep your programs current!
Hopefully, Google will come out with some type of system to make this easier.
(Good news is, there are a LOT of new apps, every day, added! LOVE IT!)

you guys know how google works on their projects... you wish for a feature, then BAM, wake up one day and it's there, along with 15 other things you never even thought of. :)
i kinda like google's "rolling release" policy.. it's better than waiting forever for version 1.0

lol @ your solution
And I should have mentioned that I keep my market set to sort by date - so every time I check , I can see if anything is different at the top... That way, since I check so often, there is never more than like... 5 (max) apps since I last checked.

Not to throw any iPhone positives out there, but they should do it like the app store; have a specific section for updated apps and appear as an e-mail or something to let you know when to update.

Bumpity.
Will I be alerted when there is an update in the Android Market for one of my downloaded apps?
I hear that there are constant updates to some of the software on the google apps store. How do I make sure I have the most current version? Removing and reinstalling seems to be the only (and a not very good one at that) option. 'Uninstalling' an application will sometimes remove all your settings for the application too.
What is the easiest way to keep my apps updated from the google android app store? The best suggestion I've read was to check the market frequently and if you see an app you've installed at the top of the list then it will probably have been updated.
Any other ideas?

the market doesnt have the ability to track your updates. this is something that developers need to incorporate on their own, and some do.
for the apps that dont check for updates, go into the marketplace, sort by date, and see whats new. any app that says "FREE" needs to be updated.
..and theres no need to uninstall them first!

Shopsavvy alerted me of a update. I havent had anymore updates from any of my other apps.

I've had Twidroid alert me two seperate ways:
The first was a "Tweet" on my timeline (even though I don't "follow" Twidroid, it's auto-published if you use their app). It said new version in the Market. Took another two hours or so for the app to actually be IN the market.
The second time, it was an actual dialog that popped up when I opened Twidroid, announcing a new version available, and it gave me the version number. Here's the kicker: the new version hasn't appeared yet in the Market...and this was 2 days ago!
I don't get it.

The way I check is by going into "My Downloads" and select the item, scroll to the bottom and select "View more applications", on the next screen you will see all the apps by that programmer, and if it says free next to the one you are checking, it has been updated. Pain in the ass, but beats the hell out of scrolling through 200 apps in the market to check on the 20-30 apps I have installed. I also installed OI Update today, funny it only picked up 4 of my apps, and of course they are up to date. Maybe more programmers will start to utilize the features of OI Update, and one program can check for all your updates.

I don't understand why everybody says they have to scroll through 200 or so apps lol. If you check if often they'll be at the top (if the apps are sorted by date). If you don't check it often, just search the name of the app and you can see if it has been updated. It seems simple to me lol.

not all the apps make it to the top.
tunewiki, shopsavvy being two examples of apps that somehow missed going to the top after being updated.
of course tunewiki notifies you of a newer version when you open it. it would be nice if all the apps do this. because even more difficult to check for are background apps that you don't even really "use" like locale, where you set it and forget it for the most part.
there should be an easier way, and as the market gets bigger as I suspect it will continually do, there will have to be an easier way.

Oh no, I agree completely. I just think for right NOW, searching and looking at the top of the list will suffice even if its tedious and unnecessary.

there's actually an app called OI Update which checks the versions and let's you know if there are new ones available, but not all apps are registered with it i believe, and it would be helpful if devs work with OI Update to register and keep their apps up to date in their database so the OI Update app will work for all the apps. also, OI Update will tell you there's a newer version and direct you to a 3rd party website to download and install it, i just use this app to let me know if there's an app with a newer version, then i manually go uninstall and reinstall the newer version from the market place. you can set the OI Update app to check at different intervals and it will put up a notification telling you about a newer version of an app. hope this all makes sense..

This will be TMI for some of you, but I guarantee I'm not the only one who does it, but I check the market when I go... um... number two.
Until G puts up a website that is an exact mirror of the market, that is complete with RSS feeds and email alerts, and sortable and searchable by every possible field of data, then this is just going to get messier and messier.
