what's up with this? I talked to a t-mobile sales person and he told me that they will start charging you for the apps that you download. Is this true or is this guy just an idiot?

The ability to charge for apps starts on Jan 1st. I'd assume thats when you'll start seeing the really serious apps come out.

From what I recall reading, on Jan. 1st a method to allow payment for apps be available in the market. It does not mean that there will no longer be free apps. I think the payment is not billed through T-Mobile either.

As Noj said.. because they will charge for Market apps. doesnt mean u will have to pay to have All of the applications, there will be really good free ones, and ones which u pay a few Quid (or dollars) to get them, just as a means of assisting the amazing Devs into making more apps !
Im also guessing, due to it being a Google application, they would possibly use some sort of watered-down/Mobile version of Google checkout to pay for the applications. it would make sense afterall, keeping the google integration around all of Googles applications.

Android is open source yes, but many of the applications written for the platform are not hence a fee.

Open source projects usually are "free", but that doesn't mean all applications written for the Android OS are free. Of course, if you don't want to spend $10-$15 dollars for an application then don't buy it.... end of story

Personally, I think if developers are going to put in their time to develop a truly useful, well-working app, they deserve to get paid for their efforts. I have no problem paying for a good app and can't wait until January to do so because that is when I am confident the really good stuff is going to start showing up in the market.

I'm willing to pay for a lot of the apps considering i got the g1 for so cheap. I agree that the developers should get something for their work. Let's just hope they don't get crazy with the prices. :)

paying for apps is not even questionable.
anyone who thinks opensource guarentees free needs to do some research.
that being said i got nothing wrong with free, thats one reason i like so many of googles products!

Agreed. If that was the case then wouldn't the G1 be free because it has an Open-Source OS on it? If only....:D

The guys who slave away making cool apps want a piece of the pie. And why not. If i spent an S-load of hours making the next big app i'd charge too. Open source is free if you want to make and publish your own app.

You need to redefine what you think about Open Source. The code is supposed to be free, not necessarily the app. You can buy the app, but I'm sure in a EULA there's a part stating you can request the code, but have to agree not to share it.
The first copy of linux I got was Corel. Had to pay $20 at Circuit City. Sure, linux is open source, and Corel gave me a source code disk. But I still had to pay the man.

Ubuntu goes for $20 at Best Buy.

If they follow the App Store's paradigm then no, but hopefully they'll allow developers to utilize free trials.

Applications on an open source OS don't necessarily have to be open source. That's up to the developer to decide. So even if you purchase apps on Android, sure you can ask the developer for their source, but they have every right to say no.

Ha ha and they are not going to be just look at all the all the EA mobile games for example. They are sh*tty ports of the flip phone versions and they are unstable as all hell and pretty much unusable.
All we get to look forward to are over priced, unstable apps that don't do much or applications where you pay for something you could just open the browser for and get the same damn thing for free. Just going to be a whole bunch of asses sh*tting out bad apps taking advantage of people whom are not going to do some research to find a free alternative.

so you're using EA as your entire basis of paid apps? please.
look at the iphone with developers like ngmoco making some awesome apps and only charging a buck or two for each. i think we'll be fine since a lot of these dev's will surely port their stuff to android.

I got no problem paying for applications that are good.
However, with the current selection of applications I'd probably only think 2-3 are worth paying for if the price is right. At least worth it for me that is.. Others might have their own favorites..
There are many apps that show promise, but I'm not paying for a beta that force closes all the time.
But overall I got no problem with buying applications that are worth it.
