Hello!

I came from Germany and I am very interested in a G1 (of course...). I am following your news every day.

What do you think about advertisements for an "Unlocked G1", shipped worldwide like:
http://www.ipmart.com/main/product/TMobile,G1,with,Google,Unlocked,63349.php?prod=633 49

Is it possible to use all features of the phone even after unlocking it?

Best regards, Jens

I think that price is disgusting, and that google has already released an update to re-close "jailbroken" phones.

Yes it is too expensive.
You can buy on ebay for 350-400 $.

Unlocking is not the same as jailbreaking

Unlocking means that the phone and all its functionality is unlocked using a valid code. Jailbreaking actually involves actual code change to fool the OS into thinking that the SIM is valid when it is not.

An unlocked G1 will run all apps normally, assuming you have the following:

a. correct APN address
b. correct MMSC settings (if you want to be able to send and receive MMS)
c. valid Gmail credentials

An unlocked G1 should be able to work in Germany without issues, though I would like to point out that it seems that the US units that come with Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger services in the IM client do not work over 3G/EDGE, only WiFi. I have not been able to successfully resolve that issue. I have not been able to get the correct MMS settings working on my phone either, but since I work in a telco, I can approach the right chaps in the team to get my settings, but that is currently not one of my priorities.

Also, the iPhone crowd who are running jailbroken iPhone are always at risk of ending up with a brick when the next firmware update comes along, while the properly unlocked units are not. Sad as it might be, I would rather count on Apple releasing tested firmware than to take my chances with jailbroken software that has not undergone rigorous testing protocols across multiple networks, and hope that the jailbreaking crowd come up with hacks as quickly as Apple can release them.

That said, I'm getting somewhat annoyed that Google has not made the latest RC30 build available to the people who know how to install them manually. This would not only put less load on their fileservers, but by making these files available from a verified secure site, it would mean that a lot of people out there don't have to wait for the OTA update to be pushed to them and can enjoy the latest patches, bugfixes and security vulnerability fixes.

Thats highway robbery. What is your guarantee that its really unlocked when you get it besides them saying it. I hate companies that try to exploit people.

Weird how T-Mobile is a German company but they don't yet carry it over there for you guys yet? Would it even need to be unlocked if you use T-Mobile over there?
