Why the hell would I want to install RC30 when RC29 gives me root access on my phone and supposedly lets me install apps to the SD card?
Can anyone that got the RC30 update confirm it actually fixes GPS and battery issues besides the jailbreak problem?

I will not be accepting it if it disables root access.

But how are you going to avoid it in future builds...

We will receive root access somehow later down the road, I will wait until that happens, and then I will update. Currently, I am not having a single issue with my g1 so it's no loss for me.

The GPS definitely needs fixing. I'm thinking about buying a Garmin Nuvi now because it sucks so hard.

I'll except the OTA when i get it in 16 days or so...thats how long the first one took to come down to me. =)
I'd rather wait for the exploit XDA finds in the bootloader so i can put a cooked rom on instead of taken my chances with someone telneting into my phone to steal my contacts info and Bank Of America account and PIN!

I don't think anyone has made it work... 29 has an opening and 30 closes it for security reasons.

RC29 doesnt let u install apps to the SD card at all. Why do u need Root access aswell ? imagine someone using the loophole to create an app that can gain root access to ur phone wirelessly and transmit all sorts of information back to the creator.. bad times !

I just received RC29 the other day. I am glad that google is responsive in closing what could be potential security risks. I am sure that they are working to fix some of the bugs/issues that people have been seeing.
I haven't had any issues with GPS as some have mentioned and after receiving RC29 some of the apps that use GPS have been functioning better, such as locale.

I don't like the idea of someone getting root access to my phone either. I work with a couple of CEH chaps and they assure me that this is completely possible if they find out certain kinds of information about my phone. I personally see no value in jailbreaking, and if I need to install apps that are not from the Android Market, that's easy to do since I can just disable the appropriate permission in Settings.

What are you doing with your G1 that mandates root access?

trying to save apps to the sd card which should have been an option for the begining.

Simple answer: RC30's primary concern is to close the security hole. If you dont mind that, then take out your battery when the your phone is updating.
If you care about your security, then install it... Sometime somehow, we will definitely be able to save apps on the SD, otherwise, there would be no need for new apps on the Market, the Market becomes stagnant and G1 becomes like any other phone...
This is a game of patience...
I too am pissed at not being able to save to SD Card, but right now, I am only testing the apps, come January with $$$ on apps, I only download what I need.
My only Concern, an update should not crash my phone or cause new issues! Period.

I switched my Web cache to the SD Card, and it seems to work pretty well.
The OTA will close the hole, but I'm sure it's not going to go in and remove every command to factory reset (though it might).
If it does then things will go right back to normal.
If it doesn't I won't be able to telnet back in and change back....but...hitting Clear Data in Manage Applications still clears out the dir the symbolic link is, so I wouldn't need root access to change it....android accesses it for me and clears out the command.

anyone who thinks this "jailbreak patch" is bad, is a goddamned idiot seriously.

I think it's bad and I'm definitely not an idiot. I've been using linux for over ten years and I realy want root access to the phone, just like I want root access to my computers. I think it needs to be setup so that the root access is protected--let me set the password. Simple. Then when I want to telnet in, I'm golden. They don't have to make it easy for us, for they don't have to make it IMPOSSIBLE either. Just let us keep the option, with the right protections in place.

Again, Patience.... As we all know, there is still a lot to do on/about G1.
We nee some kind of official wish list on this forum:
-Root Access (password protected c/o MrGibbage)
-True Copy and paste (Not only from text fields)
-Saving apps to SD card
-Opening attachments(pics, docs)
-(Without including those that can be done by/through apps, like video recording, camera menu...)
... and the list goes on

Let me get this right, it is possible to store and run apps from the SD card with RC29? I am still on RC19, never did get an update. Is Google pushing out RC30 or are people manually updating this with the SD card? I wish my G1 would get updated...

Out of curiosity, does the Java portion of Android run as root or as a non-privileged user? Can anyone with a jailbroken phone please do a "ps auxwww" (or even better, "ps auxwwwf")?
Also, does the underlying Linux installation ship with 'sudo'? I'm going to assume it doesn't, and I can totally understand where Google is coming from on this: imagine you go and install a kernel module that, for whatever wacky reason, completely borks up the phone such that you cannot make phone calls. Or maybe in the process of updating the libraries (eg libc) you completely hose the Android installation. Or Google was counting on one of the binaries doing something and suddenly it doesn't. Any number of crazy things could happen when Google can't control the underlying OS. By locking down the phone and not allowing root access, Google can avoid these sorts of situations. And since Android is really about the APIs and not so much about Linux, there's really no pressing need (sans the 'run apps from the SD card' bit that I didn't know about) to traipse around your phone as root. Not to mention that bypassing the Android APIs means one is more than likely bypassing a great deal of the security that Google put in place for Android -- apps running in the Linux layer would have direct, unfettered access to the underlying SQLite databases and could manipulate them at will without user intervention.
I think it'd be much more helpful to check out the Android source and commit patches that let you run apps from the SD cards than it would be to complain about how Google is being a totalitarian dictator about root on a cell phone.

Apparently you still can't but you can store browser cache on the SD card. ;)
I see GPS not working in some buildings, but mine is freakin awsome. Sometimes it takes a bit for the GPS to get a lock on your location. However, I can be in my house and it tracks me from room to room.
As for the updates, keep them coming. It will only make the functionality of the phone better.

rc30 is a vital update. I want it as soon as possible.
These are my thoughts on the permission structure of android. Users will never gain true root access. I believe google's stategy in this respect will be to eventually allow the user to change almost everything about the phone, but through safe APIs and configuration dialogs. Following this strategy, the standard user is essentially root at all times except missing the ability to alter or modify binaries vital to android. This allows users a great deal of freedom with their phones while preventing users or malicious apps from bricking or otherwise damaging the phone.

Users who know how, will *always* be able to gain true root access. I welcome rc30.

We can still have root access and rc30, however, it will cost you some time and work on your part. The guys over at XDA have figured it out and I am running rc30 with root access as I write this. Here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443713
You better hurry though, because once you get rc30 your out of luck.
Also, it should be made known that once you do this, you will have to manually install every update thereafter.

I just got RC30 right now, I didn't know what it is, but I'm installing all the updates, like people have said, there will always be other ways. There's a reason for an update. This isn't the iPhone you don't have to worry about Google preventing users from getting the stuff they want. I'm sure they're working on the SD card issue, remember this is still RC, which is a Release Client, this isn't even Android version 1.0 yet.

yea loving updates.......its gonna make ma G1 more sweetable.
I say, "Screw rc30," too. My G1 was working just fine before---no issues w/gps or anything else really. the battery life coulda been better, but i've always been able to charge it when needed.
early yesterday morning, though (i.e. pre-morning coffee), the OTA update caught me off guard, and i just clicked accept before even thinking about checking up on discussion boards to see what updating would mean. and really, i didn't think i shoulda been too concerned about losing root access.
but ever since that goddamn update, my phone doesn't recognize any of the media i had stored on the sd card!!! i just got back from a traveling abroad----i have hundreds of pics on my sd card that i no longer have access to on my goddamn phone! wtf?!?! i also have a lot of music w/personalized ringtone settings---all f'n useless, now!...
i like my phone working the way i want it to work. and it did just that before rc30. if google doesn't fix this soon (and, given that it took me all of 4.5 weeks to receive this any OTA update at all, i'm not sure how quickly i can expect anything from them), there's gonna be serious blow dealt to my confidence in them.
i'm a competent computer/phone user---not a developer or a cs genius by any measure---but w/communities like this, i've never had problems get just what i want out of my gadgets. but does this have anything to do w/having root access to the phone? or is this just some bug that will hopefully be fixed soon? is there any advice anyone has?
thanks,
b.
oh, and i forgot to say that when i put the original sd card (the 1 GB card that came w/it) back in the phone, it'll recognize the media that i have on that one....
and, after moving things around in different folders on the new/larger sd card, it'll recognize the music files (now that they're in a different folder on the card). but i still can't get it to recognize my photos. and, even though it recognizes my music, i can't use Ringdroid on it to modify tracks like i could before. i can't record using the Rigndroid's sound recorder, because it says it's "Unable to access SD card."
and, of course, i can't use the camera----that oh so goddamn annoying "Please insert an SD card before using the camera" message is the only response i get to anything having to do w/the camera.
i f'n hate this rc30 bs.
please, help..... please
b. :(

I have to ask...
Why would you NOT want to have the latest update for the G1?
So, you can have root access and install applications to your SD Card?
Are you telling me you are going to install all applications from G1?
What's going to happen when developers start charging for their applications?
Are you going to buy them all as well and put it on your SD card?
