Did you remember to put the SIM Card in? And register the phone when you first got i so that Gmail/Google or whatever recognizes you and your number?
I think thats right, If not someone else will post and tell you why im stupid and what your phones problem really is.

Sorry I have no clue you could google search or call T-Mobile up. You could always wait for someone with more knowledge on this subject to join the thread and help you out.

Mine was also empty. I used an old Sony Ericsson K800i, and used Contacts -> Options -> My Numbers and updated the phone number listed on the SIM. This was done because I thought that the absence of the phone number on the SIM was preventing Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger services from working properly on my non-T-Mobile SIM card.

Not quite sure what's going on here but, I had a temporary number while I was waiting for the number from my old network to be ported to my G1.
I've just checked the number on my G1 (Settings=>About Phone=>Status) and it is still listed as the temp number and not the one i now use.
Other than this, the phone works fine.
I'll try a full reset when I have time and let you know what happens.

Full resets won't work for you. The problem is with the SIM card. I've seen quite a bit of this as my app tries pulling that phone number. Here's how you fix it.
Call T-Mobile and after the language prompt they'll ask you what you need. Just say "blackberry" and that'll transfer you to the PDA Support department. Tell them that you need a MSSDN (pronounced "missdin") over the air update. If they start trying to tell you to do resets and all that garbage first, tell them you already did and it didn't work. If they try telling you that the OTAs are sent out randomly, tell them you're not looking for a Google OS update, but the MSSDN SIM update.

I was on the phone with T Mobile's Blackberry yesterday. Got them to send the updates (he even went online, and read one of GasBot's posts, so he knew exactly what I was talking about), but it didn't work.
He sent it four or five times... it wasn't like he wasn't trying!
During our call, I mentioned that I had sold my Blackberry Pearl on eBay the day before. He then suggested that I remove the sim card from my G1, and put it in the Blackberry. The Blackberry allows you, through "Options", to enter your phone number.
Entered the phone number via the Blackberry, removed the sim and reinstalled in into the G1, and it worked!
If anyone happens to have a BB or other phone, this might help.

Unfortunately some of the people in that department don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. And then again, you can say you need a MSSDN update and they immediately know what you're talking about and are extremely helpful. I wish there was some more consistency there.
