And it's not because I use it less; I probably use it more, in fact. Especially since I figured out unbelievably awesome the Maps app is (I love the search button). I even keep GPS on all the time and wifi is usually on as well. I was stunned today when I was getting off work and my battery life was still at 92%.

I was a bit stunned when I took it off the charger after a full night of charge only to text for like 5 mins and see my battery was already at 87%. Bs

What Vincent? You expect people to actually look around to find where to correctly post things, or to even search to see that there are many threads already dedicated to this subject?? Thats preposterous!

I'm not sure... I never did the stuff where you let the battery drain all the way or anything like that. I just use it normally. Right now my battery is at 60% even though it's been off the charger for 17 hours and I've been using it a lot, watched the Obama youtube speech for example (was 18 minutes long).

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you aren't telling the full truth. I don't want to sound like a naysayer, but come on, 17 hours of full use and absolutely no charge and its only to 60%? I consider mine to have decent battery but after 17 hours of full use with no charge there is no way it'd be only to 60%, it'd probably be dead, just like every one elses phone on here.

I always keep everything on. These days, my "abuse" of the G1's battery is even worse than before. Ever after I got aLast.fm Player, I use my G1 as a radio all the time. I do have it plugged in whenever I can. But on my nights out, I can go for the entire night without the battery come even close to hitting the 80% remaining mark. After 6 to 10 hours of "normal" usage, I usually still have around 85% left.
Last night I had to wait for a friend for an hour in my car. So I played a few games while listening to last.fm. When we got to the bar to watch the election results, I was on the browser for 2 hours nonstop to see if I can find more information on a few key states. Afterwards, we went over to the White House and partied there until 3am. During this time, I responded to emails and text messages, and used the strobe light app to help a friend to locate me in the crowd. After I got home, my battery was still at 65%. I think that's pretty damned good!

Stan, sounds like the battery is evolving? I'm still pretty unimpressed with my battery, and from my drive to work, battery life drops to 92% in 7 minutes - WiFi off, GPS off, just Google apps syncing in the background. Would love to know if you did anything or if the battery life just improved over time.
I used my G1 till the battery went absolutely dead last night (to the point where the phone shut itself down and refused to power back up till it was charged by the AC adapter for 5 minutes), and did a full charge overnight. Let's see if there is any improvement.

no... i'm not lying. Of course there are probably reasons why my battery life is different for most. for example, i'm not a person who talks on the phone all day and when i do make phone calls they are usually brief. nor do i send many sms messages; most of my use is from the internet.

Strange thing is that I have been using mine for 7 hours since recharge now and did quite a few things and its only down to 60%. Maybe the more we use a ton of apps at once the stronger the battery gets. Still not the best but not the worst anymore either.

When I use the internet that when i notice the most drainage. I will say that when my phone gets to 15% it will still last about 2 hrs with WIFI on and text usage. My phone convos are usually minimal as well.

My Crude Battery Test
I ran a simple test for you guys. Not very scientific, though.
The following are turned on: 3G, Wifi (not connected), GPS, Bluetooth (connected), all synchronization options
The battery started at 100%.
I loaded last.fm at full volume and activated iSafe (with voice alert on), both running constantly in the background. I went into Google Maps and scrolled from Washington, DC westward to Japan at a high zoom level, and made sure it is constantly loading. When I got bored doing that, I played Bonsai Blast for the rest of the time.
Here's what I observed:
My battery decreased by 1% every 2 to 4 minutes. This means the minimum I would get on the phone is approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes, and the max being in the neighborhood of 6 hours and 40 minutes.
My "normal" usage is basically the same, but without the constant combination of last.fm and iSafe blasting, and all the random scrolling around in Google Maps and the excessive game playing. Those drain the battery the most. Thus, without them, it's conceivable that the battery will go much much longer.
EDIT: My usage experience last night was based on RC19. This test was based on RC29.
EDIT: I forgot to add that my Google Talk is also constantly on.

I have never drained my battery. To the contrary, I leave my phone plugged in whenever I can. Every day, I send and receive approximately 100 SMS, stay on the phone for 3 hours, and use last.fm for anywhere between 5 to 7 hours (sometimes I leave it on when I sleep). When I first got the phone, the battery only lasted me 2 hours given my usage habits. I was about to return the phone when I noticed that it was getting better at a pretty fast rate. Now, I have no problems with the battery at all.

Hey Stan (BTW I wish I COULD HAVE BEEN AT THAT PARTY OUTSIDE THE WHITEHOUSE) I don't use bluetooth at all nor do i use games at all(b/c I know it will kill the battery) nor do I use google maps. I will use the browser periodically to check things out here on the boards and thats about it. Oh i do stay signed into google chat and my sync option is set to on. but b4 3pm (after being taking off charger about 815) I'm down at 15%. and I only really have a chance to use the browser between 1230-230. Other than that I'm only texting. I just have a horrible battery I guess.

Mmm perhaps you have a defective battery? You might want to see if you can get a replacement. That is way too short of a battery life.
One thing I can think of is I do use the phone constantly when it is plugged in. Usually, I leave last.fm or my own MP3s on as background music for hours at a time. One time, I even depended on Imeem for music for a house party. That was 10 hours. The phone always gets really hot, almost as hot as the bottom of my tiny laptop. Maybe by doing this, somehow the battery got stronger?
I forgot to add that my Google Talk is also constantly on.
EDIT: Oh yeah, the party in front of the White House was awesome! There had to be close to a thousand people just on the 1600 block of Pennsylvania! Cars were honking their horns, people were shouting, hugging each other, drinking in the streets... It felt like as if the US just won the World Cup and that Americans were as crazy about soccer as the rest of the world. Trust me, I can say this because I was in France when they won in '98 and saw the 3rd place celebrations in Berlin in '06.

Wouldn't a scam artist try and get something out of the situation?
