Has anyone switch from the HTC Wing to the G1. I been using Tmobile's pda/smart phone since the B/W sidekick. Started using there first windows mobile pda phone. I have enjoyed the UI and other features of these phones as the grow to become better device. I am just wondering if there is anyone that made the switch. I can live without word, excel and other programs (except acrobat reader). Has anyone giving up these features for the G1 and why?
Right now my only reasons for wanting to switch is the UI, browser and the fact that it is a open source device. Which to me means many people that can write programs will making programs for the common user.

Between the Wing and the G1 it's no contest. The Wing was outdated the day it was released. The G1 is much faster, has more memory and more and more apps being written for it every day. I switched from a HTC Kaiser to my G1 and love it. I miss some apps that were on the Windows Mobile phone, but I'm making that up by writing them myself! :D

Well the major thing is there no lag in the menu or when useing the web. There other the fact that it 3g and has a way better web experience. Then there the whole google thing that sncy with your gmail, contacts, cal and other google things...
I know it can view docs and other office things. There might be google docs support or somthing on the phone later on.
THere are tons of other little benefits to upgrade to the G1.
Let not forget about adding gps,a hell better camamra, trackpad,
and the fact it not blue...

The G1 is superior in hardware to most phones out right now and the software part is only a matter of time. Chances are some developer will develop an application that will be able to do everything your old phone could do(unless of course its lacking hardware, like an fm tuner) Its just a matter of sitting tight and just waiting for this to happen. Android just needs more exposure. The more exposure the more of an incentive a developer will have to make an app for android.
This will start to happen when carriers choose to offer android powered phones and manufactures start releasing more phones to choose from.
I think this is a big advantage over the iPhone.

I have used T-Mobile MDA for full 2 years. I am now proud owner of the G1 device and cannot be happier than what I am.
I am giving the credit to WM devices for having so much apps available that really gives you lots of possibilities. On the other hand for how long WM was out on the market they have not succeeded in business of the applications and the support. Therefore, WM device is nothing but the only decent OS that was widely spread among business/office use pocketPC GSM device oriented people.
On the other hand, G1 has everything that 21st century cell-phone should have. Great picture quality by 3.2MP camera, touchscreen, multi-touch hardware support for further upcoming apps, GPS, WiFi, 3G and most importantly the most stable and the most fast OS I have experienced so far. I have played around with WM, Palm, Linux, Symbian and OSX based devices but none of those were able to impress me as much as G1.
Great future for the OS itself; G1 as the device: well, is it perfect - it is not perfect but for me IT IS :) ... Now, everyone will have some preference over some features, but I think for having Wing priced at 299.99 is just INSANE where G1 costs almost half of it and Wing is not even close to what G1 can do and is already doing.
I think I can write about this all night long and would not be able to explain everything in details.

The wing had memory problems. If you open up PIE and the Camera you will not be able to open up anything else. Also once you go with the feel of the G1 in hand and the capacitive touchscreen you'd want to use the Wing as a paperweight.

I'm still stuck with the wing, until they decide to re stock and send my G1 out to me.

I made the same transition....B/W sidekick, color, sk2, MDA, Wing, G1. Personally, I've been waiting for the Gphone, Dream, G1 to come out for over a year. It is far better than the Wing...
-Touch screen more reactive
-No memory problems...well yet
-GPS built in
-Trackball
-Open source
-Better UI
-GPS
-Better Sound quality..the Wing speakerphone and receiver sucked
-Better camera
-did I mention GPS?
Anyway, I can go on and on, but it's time for me to leave work now!!!

No comparison. I had a Wing before the G1 and it's like night and day. The Wing was cool, but uber-slow. The only thing I miss is the HTC home screen I downloaded. It was cool to have the calendar in the background.

I had the wing and made the change. No regrets. Only thing that I miss is the ability to stream music. There is this radio station that I listen to online. Besides that, I'm loving it. I do kinda miss the old 4 row keyboard. I guess I've never been a fan of the SK keyboard and I had a MDA before my Wing so I'm used to the 4 rows.
Almost forgot, I miss is the lovely loading image every time you tried to load something on the Wing. :P

Can a SK be considered a smartphone? :)
I had the SDA. It was ok. Upgraded to the MDA. It was cool (at the time). Then I moved to the Wing. Now the G1.
WinMo has had much more time on the market to mature, and the choices of apps supports this. However, the G1 has superior hardware and software, if you can deal with the limitations of a v1.0 OS. Android doesn't quite have all the functionality that WinMo has, but it'll get better.
WinMo was slow, liked to crash, and low memory (which wasn't really a fault of WinMo). My Wing had a custom firmware to run smoother, but I still prefer the G1 and don't see myself ever going back to a Windows Mobile based phone.

I made the change from the wing to the G1 and love it, but the only reason i miss my wing is the slingbox i had on it. I hope it comes out on the G1 soon.

My opinion might be a bit extreme, but I had a Wing for a year before switching to the G1. If the G1 hadn't been in the offing, I would have paid all fines and ditched T-Mobile to get an iPhone or a Treo (my previous phone).
Reasons I hated the Wing:
1. Memory leak that was widely known and never fixed. Even rebooting nightly meant that I could only load the camera after resetting most of the time, and I didn't load it up with a lot of extra apps.
2. Slow, slow, slow, slow, slow.
3. Awful keyboard, too big for two thumb typing and poorly arranged. I ended up using the soft keyboard 99% of the time.
4. No possible way to turn off wifi notifications except for turning off wifi. I work in Oakland, CA. There are a hundred wifi networks within a block of my office.
5. No automatic connect to trusted wifi networks. Why would I have to always click twice to verify that I wanted to use my home and work networks??! I did end up turning off wifi and never using it, just like the keyboard.
6. Fracked SSL certificate implementation that locked me out of Google Mail for Mobile and other web sites.
7. Windows Mobile - why would I want an OS that mimics the desktop, making me click, search and scroll for apps that I use all of the time?
I missed the Treo every day that I had the Wing. Now that I have the G1, I understand that I'll have to be patient before all of the functionality I want is written, but 95% of it had arrived by early last week, and the UI on this phone is so elegant, well, if smartphones were cities, the G1 would be Geneva and the Wing would be Wasilla.

I was a wing owner and it's not even closed.
The question itself is insulting....lol.

G1 about 7-8 times better than Wing.

I have to agree with all your points except number one. I had the same issues, then tmobile released an upgrade on their website to fix the mem leak and camera issue. Other than the fact that the wing was super slow and no memory, I kinda liked it. BUT, I hated the fact that it was the first phone to have winmo 6, and still hasn't had an upgrade to 6.1 ... I had a custom ROM on mine, which made it faster, and more memory and winmo 6.1 ....I'm glad I got the G1, I love it so far. Had it since 10am this morning :D

I actually never had a problem with the auto-connect of trusted AP. The one nice thing about the Virtual kbd, it that it can handle 4-5(?) different type of input. palm's char entry, regular handwriting, v-kbd, etc. Hopefully Android's v-kbd can handle handwriting recognition too.

This feedback has been great. I have actually played with the phone for two day in the store and enjoyed it. The two things that are stopping me now from buying one is.
1. No way to transfer contacts from outlook. (that I know of)
2. No pdf viewing.
3. No support for wmv or mpeg4.
Over all it seem to be a great device. I am one that doesn't go off look it is performance for me. I am a power user meaning I send over 4000 txt a month and use probably over a gig of data and 1000 mins. Part of that is because I use my Wing access the net on my laptop. Now I love open source cause there is no what on a company to develop the software. Anyone can do it. The thing about this though is that with the development of some many apps your bound to run out of run for all those apps. I know you can run some of this app from the micro sd, but to me that would cause a lag in software performance. Is anyone running any app that are resource hog from sd, if so how is the performance?

i loved the wing if it was faster and loading and a few differences id be back on that
because you can make programs for windows mobile and thats the language i can actually program in learning java proves to be more difficult than i thought and u didnt need a dataplan to do anything cept if u wanted internet everywhere which is how it should always be, if you want interent buy the dataplan if not then ur phone should do everything to full potential without the internet

I think it is a shame that T-Mobile offers T-Mobile for $299.99 when there is G1 for almost half a price plus data plan. Someone will object saying data plan is required with G1 - well you get to use 3G internet (if u r in the area)...
However, poor Wing... now no one will buy that thing! :)

Well I am not in the area, but the connect is still fast. G3 doesn't roll out here to 3rd quarter of 09. I got my wing for half that price.

1. There are software that syncs Google contacts to Outlook. However most cost money. Then there are import/export tools that you can use to update both.
2. Not currently, but Adobe will probably come out with a Reader one day.
3. mp4 is supported. wmv is not.

Here is a tutorial on importing contacts. I used it to transfer contacts from my Wing and it worked nicely. http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f7/tutorial-importing-contacts-from-previous-phones-to-g1-3730/
