Someone please confirm that this is a lie!!! I just got off the phone with T-Hobo (T-Mobile) and they told me that if I cancel the data plan that my phone would not work at all.....and that I would only see an android on the screen. That's gotta be a lie.

I think once you have activated the phone you can use it without the data package.

Well since the phone syncs totally to a google account for contacts, calendar and you have to enter a google username and password to a gmail account in order to even activate it the first time, requiring a data plan makes perfect sense. It can't sync to the internet without one.

I think a basic EDGE data transfer is still included with a voice only plan. I THINK don't quote me though.

QFT. You can get OTA updates manually (http://androidcommunity.com/update-your-t-mobile-g1-from-a-microsd-card-20081031/) and do everything on wifi after getting past the Gmail activation.

"Yes, uh, I wanted to know if the G1 will work without the Data plan"
"I'm sorry the G1 currently does not have a Data plan. The data plan will be shipping out in December."

Whats the point of owning a G1 with no data plan? Might as well get a Motorola Razr or some kinda crap phone like that, ignorance in action.

Also why get $25 or $35 data plan when you can get unlimitted txt msg and a basic data plan for $20 (I think).
I have a family plan with unlimitted txting on all lines ($19.99), I dont need the 400 txt msgs bundled in the $25 data plan, but would like to get the basic $20 data plan... T-mo would not let me (at least, the rep I spoke to)

The sidekick plan doesnt work on the g1...
Only the g1 data will work with g1.

Complete lie, once you have activated your phone you can cancel your data plan and use wifi to surf and or get udpates and access the market. It seems that tmobile employees are pushing hard to get people not to cancel data plans.

Did you guys not know coming into the phone that you would need a data plan ?. When you pre-ordered the phone online before actually checking out, you had to choose between the 25 or 35 dollar plan.

It works very well, you just dont know about it... I had my G1 for about 2 weeks before my G1 plan kicked in.
A data plan is a data plan... The only difference is the added features and what comes in a bundle. Dont let anyone fool u...
It's like saying, you cannot send txt msgs with so-and-so phone or you cannot make calls when you have 300 mins voice plan Vs 1000 mins voice plan.
Savvy?

did you not know that T-mobile is not advertising the fact that other data plans can be used? (Well, you dont...)
You are not limitted to using those 2 plans, but highly encouraged to... dont let the "You can use the G1 only with these 2 plans" decieve you... These are marketing tricks, as soon as the 90 days is up and I unlock the phone genuinely through T-mo, I will diss the data plan and go wii and/or use t-mo hotspots

* go to my.t-mobile.com & login.
* Switch your phone to the Tmo Dash or Tmo wing.
* go to "my account" -> "change service"
* select the "T-Mobile Total Internet Add-on" for $19.99
* save it
see if that works.

Here is what happened with me. I bought 2 phones on my family plan and sold one and called T-Mob to cancel the data plan for the phone i sold, of course i dint tell them that i sold the phone. They told me my phone will not work if i cancel the data plan but after 10-15 mins of requesting they canceled my data plan on the other phone.
One interesting this i noticed was that CR told me that initial activation will not work without a data plan but the voice will work.

Just out of curiousity... I think that last line is interesting too.
Some G1 users (like myself) didnt have data plans prior to the G1, but upon activation could use the data with no qualsm (edge, 3g, hotspots etc)... So does the phone activation activate the data plan or what?
I think the last sentence is just inaccurate.

When I bought my g1, I had a suspened account. When the g1 was activated there was a problem and my data plan was not added.
Phone worked perfectly without any data services. Even the website showed my old phone still and no data plan.
I don't think it should matter.

i havent owned the data plan since i bought it, just been using wifi and i activated my phone without a data plan and it works fine without a data plan.
t-mo tells their reps to say that, so ppl buy the data plan and give t-mobile 25-35 extra dollars a month. i called and asked a question and she said my phone shouldnt work without a data plan and that shes suprised i could use it, and if i dont get a data plan it eventually will stop working....lol
and once again to thegaterecords, you are obviously oblivious to what really makes this phone special and no its not the data plan, this is an open source os meaning programmers can make apps for it so owning a g1 without data plan isnt anywhere close to owning a razr.
get your facts straight before you go and run ur mouth or show me an app you made for the razr then ill shut up
