Today is Nov 5th and T-mobile's "defective replacement exchange" is now in effect. I myself am getting a new one sent to me. So if you have any problems with yours send it back now while it's fresh. Chances are you just might get a new one in box instead of just the shell of the phone. Just a heads up!.

Funny, I'm still waiting for my first phone to arrive

Why would they send out just a shell? I hope they wouldnt want you to take apart yours and transfer the insides of the phone into the new shell??? To complicated and you might break something else.
Some people just shouldnt be trust with a screw driver..... ;)

That creaking noise is pretty annoying. But what does that have to do with a master reset if its the phone itself. People can be so ridiculous.

I was able to walk into a T-Mobile store and swap my bronze one for a black one right there. It was pretty painless.

after 4 calls to t-mobile CS i got a replacement phone!!!!
apparently the supervisor told me that the CS reps will need to guide you though a step by step process with you in order for you to receive a replacement phone. even if the process sounds ridiculous you still need to follow what they say. in my case i was talking to CS reps on my G1 when they said i needed to do a master reset on the phone. (i lied to them) after the said step by step process, the CS rep is sending me a replacement phone. charging me $10 for shipping which is not covered under warranty. he said that i will receive it via UPS within 7 -8 business days.
If they give you any trouble tell them you will cancel your account.

before my rep talked to her manager and her manager said, "the warehouse has to receive it by the 14th day". She was telling me that i couldnt get a brown one cause they are sold out. And she refused to notate my account saying i can get one when it comes back in stock.
I feel completely railroaded into a product i want to return. This is not the Tmobile i rave to all my ATT friends about when they are being jerked around.

I feel you pain man... my phone is frozen as we speak, the 3rd time this morning (In Hawaii), since I did a master reset last night... I dont even have any apps from the market installed so I dont see why there should be a problem except MY PHONE HAS A MAJOR DEFECT (Like AIDS, Brain Tumor, Stroke, Heart Attack and Liver Cancer all in one time)

WTF??? I got mine, had it for one day and had to send it back because it stopped booting. They said they'd send me a replacement (express UPS even), but it's on backorder. So I have no date at all as to when I'll be getting my replacement. I'm thinking of calling them and just saying forget it and cancelling it. Wonder how long before the G2 is out. :(

were you able to get a replacement and did they charge you $10 for shipping?
ever since receiving my phone, it has never locked up on me once.

Probably better if you do it in stores...you get a replacement faster.

I was going to be charged for shipping, becuase I do not have insurance on the phone, but I threatenned to terminate my contract (Family line expires in 2 weeks) and I was credited back... So it cost me nothing but time... Waiting for the device on Friday/Monday (check out my blog (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/blog.php?b=106))

You have no idea what I have been through, so I will tell u politely to zip it... I dont want to get out of control...
When you type a long email/blog or post and your phone freezes, you have to take out the battery (no draft is saved) it is not too much fun to retype that.
When you are on the highway running maps and your phone freezes, it is not enjoyable to have to take out the battery restart the phone and start finding directions from scratch (btw, I already missed my exit)

It depends on the store and the rep. The store I went to, the rep also had a G1, so could sympathize with me, he was willing to swap the phone for another but just need "blackberry and pda support" to give him the go ahead, which they didnt. And I found that kinda not too smart, since they were going to charge me for the shipping, but ended up paying for it... To save that money/time and resources (given the economic times) it could have been way easier/better for the exchange to go that route.

Question, once your 14 days are up. Can you still exchange it, if it has a defect? Isn't the g1 under at least more than a 14 day warranty?
Also if i don't have my receipt could I still exchange it?
I've never had to exchange a phone with tmo(thank you God) so I have no idea how this process works.

I just completed the exchange order process today on my phone (squeaks WAY too much). The rep said that since it's the 15th day the phones have been out, the post-exchange process comes into effect.
They ship you a "new or like-new device" along with a pre-paid UPS label to return your old device. I was warned to remove any battery, memory card, etc from the device before mailing it in.
Since the device was less than 30 days old, I was offered express shipping (19.99 3-day service) for free.

Yeah, I'm using my G1 until the new one gets here. The terms of the exchange read to me over the phone stated that once I get the new device, my old G1 has to be received by T-Mobile within 7 business days using the prepaid UPS label or I'd incur a re-stocking fee.

You do not need a receipt. If you have a defect, call them, report it and request for a replacement. The 14 day is RETURN period that will void your contract (you dont need to stay 2yrs with t-mo, but all devices are under a 1 year warranty (HTC cost I believe), you can also check your phone manual.

i walked into my tmobile today and exchanged my beautiful black G1 for another that didnt squeak. I tried the fix but the squeak came back although it wasnt as bad as it first was. All i needed to show them was my reciept and they exchanged it. I thought about getting the brown one seeing as it looks much better in person and its glossy which i like. But i decided to stick with black. It sucks though because my trackball seems a little looser than the first one. **sigh**

Question not quite clear, but try downloading the AnyCut application. It lets u add any shortcut to any of your 3 homescreens (if that was the question)
As for keeping the G1, you receive a label in the "replacement" package. That needs to be sent back to T-mobile ASAP (If is not recieved within 7 days, you get charged an arm and a leg - just kidding on the arm and leg part)

Well that kind of ticks me off. Mine bricked (wouldn't boot / turn on). I had to pay shipping there. They did say they'd express ship my new one on their dime. But I never had an offer for a pre-paid UPS label
So now I'm back to using my trusty Motorola flip phone until God knows when I get my new one (says "backorder" every time I call to check).

I've never used T-Mobile before, so I have a few questions:
1) Why are some people posting that they have to ship their defective phone back, while others are walking into stores to replace them? Can't everyone just walk into a store and get there's replaced, or do you have to ship them if you bought it online?
2) What is this "14-day" return policy? Can you exchange your phone no-questions-asked and at no-cost within 14-days of purchase?
3) What if you are a new subscriber to T-Mobile and you decide you don't like their service. Can you cancel everything within 14-days and not owe anything?
4) What's up with this "Creak" that I'm reading about?
Thanks for the answers.

1. If you bought it online or over the phone, you can't return / exchange it in the store. I've never understood this policy. You can only return / exchange a phone in the store if you bought it in a store.
2. You have 14 days to return it and cancel your contract w/o any contract cancellation fees. Afterward, it is still under warranty but you are stuck in a 2 yr contract or whatever you signed up for. If you want to cancel the contract there is a big fee.
3. See #2
4. Don't know...my guess is some people are experiencing a creaking sound when they open/close the keyboard or maybe when they wiggle the screen and/or back cover.

I got my phone on the 21st(day before launch). I called on the 14th day (2 days ago) They said I could get a replacement but since it was the last the last day for returns for me I couldn't hold on too the phone while I wait for a new one. So it was too much of a hassel to deal with so I said forget it. So I called them today and told them my problem and boom I have a new one coming to me on the 10th.
