Buying G1 w/o Contract

So I was reading and saw that if you got an G1 w/o contract you could still activate with a T-Mobile Sim....even Tmo-to-go? So pretty much you could get one on prepaid? I was wondering if I was to get flex pay on another phone is that way of getting around of paying the required $34.99 or $24.99? In my area 3G isn't available yet, only EDGE.

i bought mine without a contract an have gotten it activated with out a contract and with a wing internet plan

did you buy yours over the phone or over the internet? now if you do it on the internet it makes you add the G1 Data plan...

I was going to buy an G1 off eBay or something w/o contract and use the T-Mobile Sidekick $1/day plan, with unl. web, text, and e-mail. Even though I'm not in the 3g area would this plan still connect with 3g?
