View Full Version : I am scared of my G1 now...

I keep reading about problem after problem, both physical or software based, and I have yet to experience a single significant one (some keys are sunken...that's about it). And yea...I'm worried that my G1 may just blow up or something. All these defective units and I, Mr. Unlucky, got a fully functional stable one? Sheesh...I'mma get hit by a bus or something tomorrow.

Thats how it is when a phone first comes out. Minor issues are to be expected especially with a open source OS. All the bugs will get worked out in time. I dont really mind as long as I can still make a phone call when needed. After all in the end its still a phone.

I wouldn't worry about it right now.
I mean it's true that some people did get defected phones, but i think that if your phone was a bad one that you woulda saw the signs already.
Mine works just fine. Nothing other than a few software bugs that i can live with.

I agree! I sent mine back today too. I was so looking forward to it. Maybe I had a bad one, but the internet functions were horrible and the phone functions almost useless. I had to carry around my husbands phone, so I could have a back up for all the dropped calls. Also had to use it to check voicemail messages at my office, because the G1 wouldn't "talk" to my office voicemail. It didn't even work very well checking the TMobile voicemails. I had to use the other phone to clear all the messages. I am so disappointed. I've been waiting for so long for TMO to have such a cool phone. I can't decide whether to try another one or not.

I feel the exact way, I just got my G1 today and I made sure I went through every problem I have seen and haven't found any. I'm worried my G1 is just going to explode.

i agree. returned mine as well. a buddy of mine just got the iphone 3g and it's pretty sweet, and that is saying a lot because i used to be COMPLETELY anti-mac, but after loads of disappoint with other platforms i'm start to turn ever so slightly.
what i like most about macs are the engineering of their products. the new macbook is pieced together so well; much better than my plastic HP dv2000.
it's a tough battle, but the HTC phone has failed miserably in my mind.
HOWEVER, I have very high hopes for the Android platform. I just think TMo failed this time with choosing HTC (or at least the model of phone) for the premiere. I would have been SO much more pleased if it came on the HTC Touch HD or something else with more than 100MB space to download apps. I had maxed my phone with apps after about 12-15 apps with 3MB left...
to me, TMo's G1 is simply sub-par for today's phone market...

AndroidUser,
Just out of curiosity, what phone did you have before the G1?
Is there a poll or post somewhere what phones people had before their G1?

I love my G1. People really need to do some research before jumping into a phone they probably know nothing about. What I mean by that is this is an entirely new mobile operating system and is bound to be less than perfect but fixes will come for the imperfections. I didn't buy the phone for the hardware, I bought it because it was the first run on an entirely new mobile platform that has the potential to really change the game and I find that very interesting and exciting. I think alot of true mobile fanatics would agree.
If you are just looking for a cool new phone, you should probably stick to something that has been around long enough to have the kinks worked out.
Just my worthless opinion. ;)

That's so funny...I thought I was the only one who thinks that my g1 has a few sunken keys! I thought maybe I'm looking at it TOO closely hahahaha!
Well, I'm still on RC19 no updates yet and no problems yet, just some minor stuff but nothing too crazy! Hope it stays that way.

Just dont worry about it the G1 is gonna change they way we use our phones forever and its only gonna get better from there. Theres alwasy gonna be something bad to say about something so just hang in there, it will come out on top after all the bugs and apps get fixed no doubt.

how could someone just jump into something new without doing their research??? if ur not a patient person and dont uderstand what open source means for developers and users, return it and wait to see how this phone/ OS progresses. if this OS didnt have potential, then motorola and samsung wouldnt be all over it. WinXP sucked when it first came out.

I have not had any major problems with my G1 at all. And the problems I do experiance, which are mainly software, I undersand that there will be a fix sooner or later, either from google or 3rd party. You will definitly hear more complaints than praise, due to the fact that if someone has a bad experiance with a product they will go out of their way to let others know about it.
So many people complain about their battery, but I've conditioned it and now on a single charge and 15 hours later I still have 56% left on the battery with moderate useage.

Unfortunately, the business world does not have time for "sooner or later". When people can't get a hold of me because my POP mail doesn't work, it looks bad.
I think people need to really get their terminology straight....
ANDROID - software platform with lots of potential
G1 - the mediocre HTC Dream. A phone which mostly appeals to people who come from sidekicks, or people with iphones who don't like the touchscreen keyboard.
ANDROID is great! Yet, in my opinion was released WAY to early. I predict the same for the BB Storm. Too many last minute oversights in an attempt to push something out before the holidays...
I'm sure I will be back in a year or two once a solid platform (with all basic features put in and bugs pulled out) is combined with a more functional phone body.

I too am nervous because I have a G1 that works just fine. I do not have a creaky screen, and I get decent battery life. No dropped calls, reception is good and the browser and email work great. (I am knocking wood while I'm writing this!:D) I'm truly enjoying this phone. I think people have to realize that the phone isn't really geared for the business user. I think of it as more of a "fun" phone. I think if people want a phone they can use for primarily business use, they should go to a BB of some sort.

I honestly believe the bulk of the problems you see listed on forums are related to someone not knowing how to use the phone.
And I also feel that the "Creeking" screen in some cases (though not all) come from people trying to open the screen the wrong way when they took it out of the box.
1 out of 3 people I hand the phone to try to flip it open instead of pushing it up.
I can imagine if you did this pretty hard out of the box, you might get a little play in the keyboard.

.
if your so business minded you might want to have done some research on a brand new phone, in almost all the reviews of the phone they almost all say Fun, exciting , intuitive but not for the business class folks probably due to a few key features currently missing. Sounds like the people that were aware of these things can live without them unfortunately you are not one of them, but don't use your lack of research as an apex of an OS design flaw.

i understand, i mean the guy i voted for is the preident elect. Is he not going to be perfect immediately? or am i going to have to expect to have some sort of learning curve while the initial difficulties are sorted it out? GASP i hope not might have to return him! wait no i'l giv2e him time to prove his worth like this phone os

i've had a few "problems" with my g1, like buggy internet connection (both edge and 3g) and the GPS antenna icon popping on everynow and then even tho i have the GPS option turned off (eagle eye anyone?)
other then those problems, it's easily fixed with a reboot. the options and the joy of using the android software itself is more then enough for me to keep this phone. i just gotta wait for the update to come and hopefully (pretty sure it will) the bugs will slowly go away
they didn't call it G1 for nothing (1st generation) =)

I picked up my NEW G1 at a T-Mobile store 3 weeks after they ope: before the grand opening and they sold all the G1's but the first one they got. I was the last costumer and the manager did not want to sell it to me. He told me that they were getting a new shipment tomorrow but, I was able to coerce him in to selling me that one.(EVIL SMILE) Well, I have had it for almost 3 days now and have been loading ALLOT of apps, music, videos, pics and I have not had one issue. I love the phone but like any I WANT MORE. Would UMA be so hard to add or F.M. I'll say this right now it is the best bang for your buck.
I will post if I have issues that are G1 related.

I'll jump on the "I love my G1" bandwagon! Sure, it has a few quirks, but we all knew it would coming in to this. I come from a Dash, and this is my only phone -- I have no landline. And I've been more than happy with my new G1. I've actually noticed the antenna is a little stronger than the Dash's was, as I get phone signal in my office at work and in my apartment, when before I had to go stand in corners by windows and doors to make calls. I haven't experienced any real major issues yet, although I have come across a few bugs - but again, that was expected going in to it, as I'm an early adopter on not only a new piece of hardware, but a new OS. The original iPhone had a ton of major problems too, worse, in my opinion than the G1 is experiencing, but it seems like a lot of people are forgetting that.
It also seems, and this is my opinion, that most of the complaints are coming from people who seem to think this was supposed to be almost a computer or laptop replacement. I have a laptop, this is my phone. Yes, Internet access, email abilities, etc make life easier as I don't have to pull out my laptop for everything now, but it's still my mobile phone. Not my computer, not my MP3 player, not my Swiss Army knife. I consider it a bonus that my phone does all these really amazing things, rather than focus on all the stuff it doesn't do because that's not what, ultimately, it was designed for.
Just my two cents, as I was getting tired of reading all the posts about how horrible the G1 is because it doesn't do XYZ. :-)

This is probably why companies keep selling low quality products at high price. People these days will pay for anything for low quality product that those companies did not bother to sort out before putting it on general sales.
You'll never hear about companies tell you that they will exchange for free this version of G1 with the next version when it comes out in the future because they have repaired their "few bugs"

The newness is starting to fade. I love this phone. But I guidance on how to truly tap the resources of the OS. Must of my friends have iPhones and they send hours showing me "the Zippo lighter" app., the "piano", this that and the other. What, am I going to be the life of the party in the non-smoking section? I don't need all the "cool kids" apps to have a great phone.
I'm happy with Zombie, Run.
As I said before, "Wait for summer."
