So i talked to a TMO PDA dude today about some issues ive been having with my G1.
He said regarding my issue with the G1 not seeing my SD card. That google knows that rc29 created this issue and they a new OTA would be sent out starting next week. I didnt get any specifics on anything else other then that.
anyone at TMO verify this?

I am starting to dislike these CRS... Thay do not all speak the same language... I understand they are located in different areas, but I spoke to one last week and she had no idea about the OTA... "Since this is a new software, I dont think there will be any updates anytime soon"... I knew better than arguing, I had better things to do and just had to get off the phone...
The next day, BAM! I got my update...
BUT again, my problem is, someone needs to let us know what is being updated, added and/or removed... I dont want to update my phone without knowing the changes that follow. GOOGLE, THAT IS SO UNPROFESSIONAL!

that was another issue i told them about me having.
I also had an issue connecting to webpages i get a 504 gateway error.
The sd thing i told him was specific to taking pictures and downloading images from a webpage.

I don't understand why we are not getting updates quicker than we are. You would think that Google could push out fixes a little faster than they are doing.

The toilet paper coming out of the SDCard is a nice feature, but way to thin to do any good. Just another half-ass feature from the G1!
Oh and the flash was a nice added feature to, but hardly even works....seems to only flash when i have the phone resting against my eye! Pretty bright when its mm away from my eye!

Maybe a reason for the test.. aka fix
I have to admit- the rate at which Google is addressing and fixing the Android glaring holes is pretty pathetic.
How much money does that company have? How many employees work there?
Are they all just sitting around the break room playing pingpong or what? Somebody get on a keyboard and give us some BASIC SH!T like seperate screen timeout from the lock
DAMN!

Dear god, you guys are vicious. The G1 has been out for 2 weeks and there have been TWO updates already. Improved battery life, much better GPS, faster UI, etc, etc.
Yet you're all still complaining that it's not fast enough? The update was last week, chill the hell out.
You all bought a phone with a brand new OS, you should have expected some bugs. Still, the bugs are not big deals...stop acting like they are. The only possible serious bug I've heard of is an issue with SD cards, but it seems to be rather uncommon.

hmmm, can you show me the spec sheet you read this from? because until you provide that you're simply pulling random facts out of your ass.
bugs ARE a big deal, otherwise they wouldn't be called bugs. would it be better if you called them cotton candy?
people are returning their phones left and right because of these bugs, including myself.
i didn't sign up to be a beta tester. i signed up for a phone to handle my daily needs. POP mail being one of them. and i don't want to hear "durrr, forward mail to your gmail account." NO! I'm not forwarding work mail to my gmail. That's why there's a gmail app and another for other emails.
i understand that this was the beginning of android, and i see a great future far down the road for it, but the poorly combined HTC device, slow (random) update methods, and lack of actually announcements/paperwork is unacceptable from such a large company. (those are only a few examples)
Those of you coming from sidekicks, dashes, and shadows may find the G1 to be a breath of fresh air, but those of us coming from BlackBerry's (THE PEARL DOES NOT COUNT), iPhones 3G's, and other sophisticated phones find this to be somewhat of a downgrade.
I said it. Now go ahead, give me your worst! lol

Hmm interesting that you dislike the phone enough to return it but the attachment you had for your blackberry/and or Iphone must not have been very strong to keep you from being enticed to purchase unproven OS on a new phone....

I'm sorry, if you returned the phone why the hell are you here?
I did not feel like a beta tester at all. Great phone. Fast updates. Good luck with your blackberry...I'm sure everyone from 1999 will think you are very cool.

i agree 100%
the guy did no research on this phone the phone has issues no doubt. the real question is...drum roll...
Did you look into the phone AT ALL? be fore buying it? the answer is no... its that simple if you think you did please just go play on the high way...
any one that did "some" yes even a little understands its open source but even more its freaking NEW which means it has a LONG ways to go but it will get there (with no help from people like you)...
i can honestly say after using a blackberry curve a blackberry pearl a nokia 5300 about about 20+ phones over the years this is bar far the best phone i have EVER used.
i think its getting better daily most my other phones gets worse as the days go on. so the question is who si in this for the long run?
p.s. sorry i am just tired of hearing people bitch about things they should of already known. for example "there is no head phone jack bla bla bla" yep theres not and that was ont he spec sheet you should have done some reading before you bought it.

I can verify there is another OTA to be released shortly, but it updates more of the Android OS and the browser rather than focused on fixes - at least thats what I gathered from the note in Streamline last week.

hmmm, can you show me the spec sheet you read this from? because until you provide that you're simply pulling random facts out of your ass.
Spec sheet where I read what from? If you're referring to improved battery life, better gps, faster ui...that's what I have experienced and others on this forum have as well. Sure a list of what changed would be nice, but 99% of people won't read the list anyways.
I saw my battery life go up significantly. My GPS started working when it hadn't before. Opening up lots of apps and pressing the Home button was much faster to respond. Call it what you want, I was pleasantly surprised to read that others experienced the same thing. I don't need a spec sheet to tell me that my GPS worked after the update when before it didn't.
bugs ARE a big deal, otherwise they wouldn't be called bugs. would it be better if you called them cotton candy?
Sure, bugs suck. This is a brand new OS. Everyone knew there would be bugs. What's your point?
However, less than 2 week turn around times for patches is superb.
people are returning their phones left and right because of these bugs, including myself.
Not really...there are a handful of you. The phone still works just fine, it's just not perfect yet. I will generalize and say most G1 users can handle a few bugs.
i didn't sign up to be a beta tester. i signed up for a phone to handle my daily needs. POP mail being one of them. and i don't want to hear "durrr, forward mail to your gmail account." NO! I'm not forwarding work mail to my gmail. That's why there's a gmail app and another for other emails.
It does support POP mail. It just doesn't support Exchange server, for now.
i understand that this was the beginning of android, and i see a great future far down the road for it, but the poorly combined HTC device, slow (random) update methods, and lack of actually announcements/paperwork is unacceptable from such a large company. (those are only a few examples)
This has nothing to do with HTC. I'm 99% sure the updates are being done by google. HTC just made the hardware.

I have an iPhone 3g. I have a Symbian S60 phone. I used to have a Windows Mobile phone. I've played with a Blackberry, perhaps that's the only OS I haven't used much. Still, I'm pretty experienced I'ld say.
I waited a solid year for Android. Given that, I'm not let down at all. New apps come out daily, it's exactly what I imagined.
Android is the future. It's Open Source and so far Linux and MySQL have taken a huge market share away from the major competitors. Android will do the same thing. The support is immense, so for now yes Android is not the best. But give it 6 months tops, it will be amazing and it will set the new standard for phones.
The new OTA Update to be sent out Nov 11?
I just got off the phone with T-Mobile PDA customer care and they said that the OTA Update is suppose to fix new e-mail notifications and something about viewing/deleting email. I hope it does? I'm not sure of the exact specifics or build number (maybe RC30).
They told me RC29 was to fix and Amazon issue and a browser issue.

For those that are saying the method of OTA update is too slow, or unprofessional, keep this in mind.
The proccess of an OTA release as it has been in the past with T-mobile (ie. sidekicks) Is to slowly roll out the update to all the users. As much as we'd all like to see updates imagine for a moment the update is pushed out to everyone at once. The network would struggle, or even worse said update could begin to brick devices and at that point it's to late to pull it back. I've been through many OTAs and the worst part of it is knowing that one is being released and that you don't have it yet. When it comes it comes. It's already been mentioned that some devices are having issues after the update. In this case since everyone doesn't have the update this allows them to analyze those cases and possibly rework the update.
As much as you wish the update was done and over with. As someone who's been there. I can say now that you just have to get used to ignoring OTAs until they hit your device. Otherwise it'll drive you crazy. That being said I'm still on RC19 and couldn't care less about the updates. I'm enjoying my phone as is.

i think the idea is to OTA updates and have it available on mirrors to download.
Not everyone knows about these updates. especially just users who went and bought "the google phone". Those people arent going to actively search for updates. Like we do.

I agree after the update is ready for final release I think they should make it readily available in some way. They may be afraid to post it online as far as security.

Yeah but OTA is just they way they do it, not saying it's the best.

IM sure we will be getting a Slap load of OTA's to fix various issues as they come up eventually the OS will be Flawless just take care of ur G1s dont break em or trade em before we get em all

Ultimately the best way to facilitate this information is to not worry too much about it. Quiet the (somewhat) hostile nature here. Just wait till someone actually GETS the OTA then comment on it.
Now, as far as distribution goes; I say keep the OTA as is for the technological laymen, but put the update someplace where the more techi users can (easily) update at will, some sort of mirrored server or dedicated server that can be accessed directly from the phone.
though there should be a group of people dedicated to updating and maintaining Android (EH HEM GOOGLE) regardless of what phone it is on. For example take linux distributions for pc, they are constantly being updated regardless what hardware they are running on. Perhaps the latest upgrades will focus more on ANDROID specific issues and not G1 specific issues (its not to say that the G1 doesn't need work though, don't get me wrong).

to be honest, the only complaint I have about the phone is the battery life. This damn thing works so well for me that I find myself using it at every opportunity, and that pretty much wipes out battery life. WiFi is a huge drain on the battery as well, to the point that if I sit at a cafe and surf the web for an hour, I know I'll be paying for it badly since at least half the battery life will be wiped out.
But it works, and I've used worse - like an iPhone - no switching between apps, and I HATE that virtual keyboard with a vengeance. Not to mention that Steve wants to tell me what I can and cannot install on my iPhone (I am refusing to go down the jailbreaking route), copying music and videos to and fro (especially when switching between computers) is a PITA compared to the good ol drag and drop in file manager simplicity of Android.
Having used quite a number of phones in the last 6 months or so, I'd have to say that the G1 wins my heart and mind, and if only battery life was MUCH better, I'd be one happy puppy.

Totally agreed, I'm completely loving my G1 also. The only two issues I have are some 3G issues, but the main one being the terrible battery life I'm getting. If they can fix those two issues, I couldn't be happier.

we feel your pain, you took it upon yourself KNOWING it was a new OS, and if im not mistaken Google didn't put a gun to your head to buy it either...but on the other hand you are correct they should be doing better than they are with the updates, this really is the only problem...I believe by the end of December ****, by the end of November rather, they'll have a website or blog setup for update notices.
PATIENCE, if all they ask PATIENCE. They just need to be a tab more professional and I'm sure they probably don't mean for the updates to be so scarce but IT IS WHAT IT IS and they are...
Please fix this, its really not an issure for me my RC19 is on point, but i would love to get an update or be able to do it manually directed by google, not some 3rd party...
