There is finally an option to use your G1 connection with your laptop. Its not the best solution but its better than nothing. I'm posting this from my laptop using the G1, so I can confirm that it works.
The url to the site is http://graha.ms/androidproxy
Here is a copy of the instructions
* Install the app on your android phone, by clicking here (http://graha.ms/androidproxy/Proxy.apk) (from your phone browser of course)
You might have to change your settings to permit apps that don't come from the Google Market by going to your home screen and choosing MENU > Settings > Applications > Unknown Sources.
* Turn USB debugging on on your phone
On your G1 go to the home screen, press MENU > Settings > Applications > Development, then enable USB debugging.
* Follow the instructions here (http://code.google.com/android/intro/develop-and-debug.html#developingondevicehardware) to install the Android driver - you'll need to do this on Windows & Linux but apparently not on the Mac.
* Download and install the Android SDK (http://code.google.com/android/download_list.html) for your computer platform. Alternatively if you are on Windows and don't want a 100 meg download, just get the ADB utility from here (http://graha.ms/androidproxy/AdbWin.zip)
* Plug your phone into your computer
* Choose Proxy App from your phone's menu
* Press the "Start Proxy" button on your phone
* Move to the directory that has the adb utility, using inside the Sdk Tools folder and run
Windows: adb forward tcp:8080 localabstract:Proxy
Linux/Mac: ./adb forward tcp:8080 localabstract:Proxy
* Now you should have a proxy server running on port 8080 of your own computer that will relay the information over the Android Debug Bridge to the Proxy App which will relay it on to the internet.
* Set your firefox proxy : Options > Advanced > Network > Manual Proxy Configuration
HTTP Proxy: localhost
Port: 8080
Leave the others blank
* Enjoy the slow slow EDGE network, or let me know if you have glorious fast 3g coverage!
* Remember to disable your proxy settings in firefox if you want to stop using your phone.
I had to install the Proxy.apk manually using the following code, but ymmv
Code:
adb install Proxy.apk
------------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as testing it out, I've tested it out, and it works!
I've tested this using EDGE and 3G and it works!
Although I did have trouble loading flash intensive sites, and gmail.com for some odd reason.

As fast as your data connection is. It would be slower on EDGE, but faster if you're connected to 3G.

open the adb utility using the command prompt.
In windows go to START > RUN
then type CMD
when the prompt comes up, type:
cd <directory folder where adb is installed>
in my case i typed:
cd C:\apk\android-sdk-windows-1.0_r1
of course it will be different on your computer, because it will depend on where you have stored your android sdk.
but once you have successfully changed directories, type:
adb install proxy.apk
make sure the proxy.apk file is in the same folder as the ADB program.

prepare yourselves for a big t-mobile bill hahahahhaI would take this with a grain of salt. But according to a t-mo help desk guy that posted in on one of a forum that I frequent, that "unlimited" 3G data plan actually capped out at ~1Gb per month. T-mo won't charge you or stop your data service once you get there, but will slow you down to EDGE.

I'm pretty sure T-Mobile reversed that decision as many people seemed unhappy with it. Can anyone back me up on this?

Now we just need a much more user friendly app to do this. While following the steps is no problem for us, less technologically inclined users will not be able to understand all that, let alone following it.

I'm pretty sure it could be done now that a workaround was found. Too bad I'm not a developer, otherwise I would have done it already. =[

I've downloaded the Proxy App onto the phone, but when I try to install, all I get is an "Installation Unsuccessful" message. Tried re-downloading several times with the same results. Any suggestions?
Make sure you set your phone to allow non-marketplace applications. It's in the instructions at the beginning of the thread. It will fail otherwise.
BTW, for people questioning whether this is a hack or not, it's really a very simple method.
Basically this person was using the Andriod development debug environment to allow the USB to act as a proxy. Since the Android SDK allows you to emulate being on the t-mobile network, it works as expected.
I highly doubt this is something they could "patch" and remove because it would seriously affect development on the Android platform if you couldn't emulate the G1 connection.

As the original poster said, I also had to manually install the app (from my computer, not from android browser).
Make sure your device is connected and USB debugging and unknown sources are set on phone.
Then just open up command prompt (Start>run>type "cmd", hit enter.
Now in the console just run the command to install the app to your device.
<pathtoadb>\adb install <pathtoproxy>\proxy.apk
Here is my example:
c:\downloads\adb install c:\downloads\proxy.apk
When you go to your device you should see the Proxy App and should be able to start it.
now you just need to start the server on your computer using
<pathtoadb>\adb forward tcp:8080 localabstract:Proxy
So my example:
c:\ downloads\adb forward tcp:8080 localabstract:Proxy
Verified working with 3G in NYC, decent connection, but its still very slow compared to wifi, but that's expected.
This is actually pretty exciting and a great job to the developer, from a fellow developer.

adb forward tcp:8080 localabstract:Proxy
and get a message saying device not found
"*daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully*

Whats the point of over paying for so called "unlimted" if they are going to put a cap on it? This is something I used every night at work with my Dash so Im missing this on my G1. Im going to try this and see how it works and Im going to call Tmo and ask them the very same question.

works on my MBP. download FoxyProxy for firefox and make a proxy with the hostname localhost and the port '1080'
IMPORTANT!!! Make sure you check "Use SOCKS proxy for DNS lookups" in the 'Global Settings' tab or this will not work at all. I spent a while trying to get it working because i didn't know i had to check that box.
When your done doing this make sure you select "Use proxy 'tether' for all URLs" (i named mine 'tether')
Good luck!

I can't get it to work either.
The APK installed to my phone fine, and when I tap "start socks", the "socks service starting" alert pops up... as it should.
On my PC (windows / firefox), I used the ADB utility linked on the Tetherbot page.
I typed
adb forward tcp:1080 tcp:1080
as instructed, and I got the "service started" message (or whatever it said - I dont remember the exact wording now...)
EDIT: Just got it working... I opened task manager and looked @ my services. For some reason, the WinHttpAutoProxySvc was stopped... Had to manually restart it, and all is now well...

I just wanted to say I got mine to work but its slow. I did a speed test for my phone from the speedtest app and from a website for cell phone speed test. I get about 900+ Kbit/s avg tho out the day. But when tethered I cant even do a speed test because its taking forever to load.
However I understand this is still just a start and I thank you all for the inputs and how to's.

Does anyone know if someone is working on a WiFi Router app? I had one for my WinMo phone and loved being able to connect my iPod Touch to the Internet using teh phone as a router. Also, it would be a better option than having to hack through menus like this and install special drivers and proxies.
