hey y'all I am very very new to the android community and I had some questions that hopefully can be answered!

First what makes android so special? What does android offer that others don't?

I have been lookingin to this "G1" phone and am trying to figure out what all the hype and pizzaz is about it. What does can android offer that apple can't?

I have owned two iPhones the original and now the 3G, and I'm curious what does g1 can do that the iPhone can't or what makes the g1 better?

Thanks for the help!

I own an iphone, and recently purchased a g1 had it for about 2 weeks and took some time getting used to coming from an iphone. I returned my g1 today ( because I found a better deal I could get the g1 with through my company) and can honestly say I am not feeling the iphone anymore....its annoying to me now.
Thats just my opinion though.

By the sounds of it, you wont like G1. Android, at this point is a basis to be built upon, and if your looking for the "greatest" and "best-est", you're going to be disappointed.

I like my G1, but I'm an early adopter, a developer and a fan of Open Source. I am not a trend follower and my "hipness" is not defined by my phone (well, my nerdyness is then...)

part of the pizzazz is its not an iphone.

the hype is a google backed open sourced mobile os

the phone itself is currently the means to be an early adapter to those two things.

good phone on a young operating system with all th2e potential of any developer, i'm sold

Well it is open source for one, and being able to have a basic feature like copy and paste is kinda great, the OS is multi-threaded which is kinda essential for a smart phone. Removable battery, no reliance on a product as completely retarded as itunes, I mean what kinda of tool would actually use DRM'ed media? Keyboard, removable flash based storage. Thats just to name a few great things about this phone, but also keep in mind it's a google product so it's gonna be buggy and in beta for awhile. But if your smart enough it's the type of phone that you will beable to make do anything by virtue of the fact that anyone can write an app for it.

The way I see it so far is, the G1 is for people who like hacking around with technology to make it do cool stuff for them, and the iPhone is for people who want flashy technology that they don't have to mess with. Both have their place and they are both pretty sweet phones. Bottom line is That the iPhone is limited to what apple wants it to do, where the G1 is only limited by what the community of people using it want to do with it.

dingdingding, we got a winner.

It's similar to my winmo/symbian comparisons of old..."I enjoy tweaking the hell out of my winmo, but I love the "it actualy works" aspect of my S60"

I totally agree with you...
here is a blog post from CEO of Funambol tell us how android will beat the iPhone...

Found in a thread posted by Androidguy...
the Ceo said...

A week or so ago Google was alone in developing Android. They made it open source and boom, an internal application is getting perfected by the community. End user benefit from it immediately, because they can download it for free from the Android Market (which is such an easy task to do)...
and...
When it comes to firmware update, here is a good one. Android does it over-the-air (OTA). You receive a message, click on it, wait a few minutes and your are done. No iTunes, no cable. Pushed to your phone. At the moment, it is a bit random (some got RC29 already, some did not) and they should make the process more transparent. But it is a great innovation over the iPhone.

Android gains more and more abilities by developers where as Iphone is only locked into what Apple says is ok...
For example: You can't even send picture text messages via your Iphone... you can through Android... and this is something that has plaqued Iphone since its begining...and they still haven't fixed it... with Android it can be fixed... if not by Google by the community supporting it... Our Self Reliant Community sets us apart from Androids competitors... really its like one big Android robot with tiny nanomachines fixing problems from within the Android itself...
Maybe thats the reason for the "Android" name....

Aside from that... I personally wrote this thread about Online Books Available on Android Phones...
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f7/online-books-coming-to-android-6139/

The thing that Google is doing is basically scanning all text and making them available for the general public.. for free or for a price... and there is no one else that is remotely close to doing what they have done so far... So basically Google will have Monopoly over this Market... and because it's Android... What mobile device will be more widely available to read those online texts? You guessed it.... Android...
Just a couple things to consider... ^^

well the book scanning just cost them a lot of money, and the kindle is slowly making headway. mot public domain books are already available... but i understand your point, just have to be fair

I have been using WM devices for a long time and I have also got an Iphone 3G. The reason for me to joining the world of Android is just simply that I am bored after using the operating system of WM and Iphone for such a long time and really want to get some excitement from Android! haha

I am looking forward to the fast pace development of Android in the future! :D
