Ok,
What you are about to read is the biggest and the only problem that no one wants to have.
I bought my G1 from ebay and unlocked it. However, here in my poor country (which is very far from USA), there is NO internet over cellphone line available. All you can do with your cell is to call and send/receive txt msg.
So how in the bloody hell am I suppose to activate my gmail account?? Isn't there a damn way to power on WIFI and input the WEP code so I can then activate the gmail account?
Please help me :(
Btw, if you tell me, "hey dude use your friend t-mo sim card, the trick is all over the internet, it works!", you are officially retarded.

you said there was no internet over cell phone line? but you have wifi?
if you have wifi problem solved, unless your in say china and the government does not allow you to use gmail then you have a problem just not with gmail.

Boot it into safe mode, connect to wifi, and run the setup. You might have to reboot into normal mode for the setup, but this way at least you will have wifi setup. Good luck!

Mail it to a buddy in the US and have them do the sim card swap thing. Then have them mail it back. I'm sure you could find someone trustworthy on here. ^_^

What he is saying that he was access to wifi. But he can't get past the activation screen because activation can only be done over cellular data network.

WAIT! Are you sure this works? Can we really log on WIFI in safe-mode (like without activating the gmail account)?
Ok, lol, I forgot to mention, i still dont have the G1 in my hand. Its comign tomorow, I really hope this works. Can someone confirm?
But If that really works, whats with all these thread on google about "activating your phone with a friend tmo SIM card" like if it was soemthing unbelievable. Why wouldnt they just log on wifi with safemode and activate this way?
I really need a confirmation, because otherwise, I'm just not gonna answer the door tomorow and let the phone go back to the buyer so I get a full refund (or refund minus the shipping).

I don't think you can actually get onto wifi in safe mode. You can only set it up for connection there. Once you have done that, boot into normal mode, hopefully the wifi will connect. At that point activate your phone with your Google account. You can't get past registering with Google.

but are you sure I can't connect to wifi or at least input the WEp code to wifi in safe-mode so that the phone automaticly connect to internet if I restart it in normal mode?
Would please someone very kind reset his G1 and disable 3G and try connecting to internet via WIFI in safe-mode without activating their gmail account?
edit: ok maybe my last request is too much... instead, can someone please log in safe-mode and check if you can play with WIFI settings overthere? please

There has been a few threads on this. Anyway, I just checked for you. Yes, you can play with all the settings in safe mode. Furthermore, I was wrong, you can actually connect to Wifi in safe mode. Safe mode bypasses the unlock pattern screen and SHOULD also bypass activation. Try it out when you get the phone or post a new thread asking someone to reset their phone for you.

ok cool thanks a lot!!
but all this made me think now... does the G1 have to be connected to internet in someway to power on?? Like if I understand correctly, each time your power on your G1, it automatcly connect to your gmail account (which you have already activated and which password is already saved). Now what happens if there is no internet connection, will the cell block you from entering main screen since you're not signed in with your gmail account?
I really need to know the answer to this

No, once you activate, you can get into the main screen before the device even starts to acquire cellular or data signal.

Lol, you are welcome. Make sure you get someone to reset their phone to see if safe mode will bypass the activation screen though. It should, but I haven't confirmed it myself. I have way too many things loaded to reset mine, otherwise I would.

are you sure a "soft reset" will delete all your data?

Yes. I had to do that because my phone started acting really funny once and wouldn't let me turn it off.

Ok, you are not going to like this!
If you don't have data over the gsm network, you won't be able to play with your phone.
You need an active data channel to complete sign-on with google.
No matter what others tell you, without the data, it won't register.
I know because I've done the unlock myself.
Booting into safemode prior to registering with google doesn't work.
You are still unable to change wifi settings. Even in safemode, it returns to the set-up wizard. If you can't complete that wizard, your stuck with a flashlight. Nothing more, nothing less.
I'm not sure why others try to tell you it's different.

That's why I think he should have someone confirm that Safe Mode will bypass the activation screen first. I have read it somewhere that it will by pass the activation screen and the pattern unlock screen. I only had the opportunity to test the latter and it worked. After reading your post, I guess the success from the latter does not impute to the former.
On a side note, this way of doing things is really not smart for Google.

Hi Stanovoy,
Let me be the one to confirm then.
"Safe Mode won't bypass the set-up wizard". And without completion of that wizard, his phone is a paperweight.
