I have installed about 18 apps so far and noticed that I only have 29 MB left of internal memory? I though the G1 had something like 256 MB of internal memory. Even with the preloaded apps, I would think I should have way more than 29 MB left of internal memory. All my apps are way below a meg, except for my Browser (13 MB) & Market (7 MB). Is anyone else experiencing this?

I have installed 72 apps so far and 20MB space left. I don't know why you have so little bit left. cuz even if you clean up your browser cache it's only gonna clean less than 13MB that you have.

plus I only get that low memory notice maybe once or twice a week.

Clearing the cache did gain me 10 MB (thanks!), but I feel like there should still be way more available.

I read on the google forums that there is a "security issue" with loading apps onto the SD Card. That was posted by one of the google admins but they didn't really specify what the issue was. It seems odd since Windows Mobile allows you to save directly to the sd card.

The Android operating system itself, along with the preloaded applications do indeed take up most of the allotted 256MB of memory. For reference, compare your size of your desktop operating system to a regular application on it, i.e. browser, music player.

but still, how come I have 72 apps and still have 20mb space? I thought everybody's like that. but I see some people here only have few apps and less space? why?

Ya, id like to know how you have 72 apps too?!

While i had my g1 i had like maybe 12 from the market, cleared the cache and everything and had about 20mb left. What stinks, i dont see how the app market can even stay afloat after a little while with everyone running out of room. Security issue? what?! than why not leave more space in the internal google/htc... whoever..??

Your wrong..when u add all the app's together thats on the phone it only comes up to like 100mb or less. The G1 never comes with 192.0 MB or 256 MB. Someone told a lie:mad:

isn't the stock internal memory of the G1 - only 128 mb?

if you look up the specs, the internal ROM (storage) is infact 256mb. The RAM is 192 (memory). The OS may not take up as much as it appears, but you have to think about all the synced data, the included walpapers and ringtones too. All of this dose infact take up close to around 200mb +/-. Leaveing only about 50mb +/- for 3rd party apps from the market and even only that for any updates that would increase OS size.

this info is listed elsewhere, but this is the best link IMO http://www.htc.com/www/product/g1/specification.html

um... ya, thats what i said, 192mb RAM (meaning memory). When someone refers to "internal memory" they typicaly mean 'storage' of the actual data- the ROM, not the RAM.

all i know is my phone ran out of storage last night and i had to delete some apps i dont use. but yea Android or a Developer is going to need to make an app to transfer your apps to your sd or store cache cookies history etc. to your sd card. if not by december/jan. your going to have alot of g1 users complaing.

I just counted again just to make sure. thought maybe I counted wrong since everybody here seems they only have less than 20 apps. but I did have 72. right now I have 68 apps, cuz I deleted few I don't want anymore.
so nobody else have more than 50 apps?

Starting fresh, I think the phone has something like 65mb. I have a few apps installed (counting from my downloads, 23 to be precise) and am down to around 45mb. But heavy surfing can cut that down drastically, as well as gmail, calendars, contact pics, etc. I just mentioned this in another post, but yes...the ROM in the phone is REALLY low for such a device. Most other touch phones are sold with at least 1gb of ROM, especially at the G1's retail price point. By comparison, the Touch Pro has 512mb ROM and 288mb RAM, the Touch Diamond has 256mb ROM & 4gb internal storage and 288mb RAM and the Iphone has 8/16gb ROM/Internal Storage and 512mb RAM.

I guess the trick for us early adopters is to not load the phone with unnecessary apps. We can only hope and pray that at some point, Google releases firmware that allows the phone to siphon the SD for ROM and RAM storage.

just root your phone and run apps to sd on it.
