First off.. ive heard complaints about paypal. ive heard how much people hate paypal.

well i never cared... but now i see why.

Recently i bought one of those android stickers from a guy here on the forums. 8 bucks, via paypal. seems simple.

Then it gets interesting.

he sends me the request to pay for the sticker. i get the request and proceed to pay for it. I press "pay" or whatever lingo paypal uses.

I have 4 bank accounts tied to my paypal. though i only keep money in 1 account. especially now that im unemployed im running out of monies.

well apparently my default account on paypal is one of my accounts with a balance of 0. well since it didnt give me the option to choose an account, i didnt get to choose which account.

so the next thing i know. my bank history shows i have a -60 balance on one account. So, knowing i dont use that account i get suspicious.... Well long story short. paypal proceeded to charge me 20 dollar ISF fee for each account i didnt have funds in. So since i have 4 accounts and 3 were empty.....apparently its in their terms of service. SWEET.

well i hope i enjoy my 60 dollar android sticker over not being able to pay my power bill!!!!!!

That is pretty ridiculous that they did that. However if you're unemployed and running out of money, why are you buying stickers?

thats neither here nor there. and really... 8 dollar sticket > 8 dollar hamburger.

so apparently paypal is observing some holiday so no one is working today there.

I stopped using paypal back in 2006 when they tried to have me pay a 1500 fee for a graphic I made, someone paid me, then tried to get the money back...

I won...but talking to them was the most annoying thing in the world.

i've had issues with paypal in the past... i don't like their policies either... esp. their lack of "investigation" during disputes...

their way of settling a dispute is to have the buyer send the product back to the seller and refund them their money... so, you could sell someone something, they then break it, file a complaint, send it back to you, and you be stuck with the used/broken item....

and before they even investigate, they put a hold on the funds and the money is held hostage for at least a week, sometimes longer depending on how fast the dispute is settled...

I have to agree that their dispute method needs restructuring, but as for the NSF thing... And at the risk of sounding rude... It's your fault. You've GOTTA treat Paypal like a bank account. You've gotta know: "Hmm... my default account has a zero balance... maybe I should change that before making this transaction"

Just like, if you have 2 check books, linked to 2 accounts. If the check book that is in your purse/pocket is for an account that has a zero balance, you don't just use it... You go out to your car and get your secondary check book and use that one.

I agree that paypal isnt perfect, but I'd say that the majority of it's CS problems come from the fact that most people that use Paypal just think of it as another online service, when in fact - it's a bank - and you MUST treat it as such.

Paypal is pretty ridiculous. Is there any other services you can use online to make safe transaction, paypal can't be the only one.

Many of the problems with PayPal are concerning the customer service and their way of handling disputes, but in this case, I would also have to agree that this was your fault.
If you knew there weren't any funds in those 3 accounts, you should have unlinked them from your PayPal, especially if you knew that the default account didn't have any funds.

I'm pretty sure it gave you an option to choose the funding source. Everytime I pay someone through PayPal, it ALWAYS gives me an option to select my funding source, whether it be from my bank or credit card.

Wow, that really sux. But if you have that many accounts attached, how did they not give you the option for alternative funding?? I know the option is always there when I use paypal..

I just got screwed by Paypal as well , but not nearly as bad.. They decided to randomly change the date my payment is due, which meant I now have a late fee..

yeah something similar happened to me. with a $6 GBA game i bought off ebay. Even though i had a credit card attached to the account, and it even states that if the funds arent available it will charge to the CC it tried to take it out of the bank account and I was charged $25 NSFW (or whatever they call that fee) so i got burned on a $6 game. I still use PP but just gotta be more careful, and double check EVERYTHING... LOL.

Everytime I pay someone through PayPal, it ALWAYS gives me an option to select my funding source, whether it be from my bank or credit card. That used to be true, but it's not anymore. I bought something just the other day and for the FIRST TIME it did not give me a choice to change the account. I guess this is their way to keep people like me from charging everything on PayPal using a credit card. The charge came out of my checking account and I had no way to change/stop it.

Given this new thing, I can see how OP would get caught. I was fortunate I had enough in my account to cover the purchase, so it wasn't a big deal.

Beware!

ahh that sucks.. .I try hard to despute it..

better yet you could list it as a bid on ebay starting at 59.99.. lol but then again if you dont have the money to pay ebay fess they will just role over into your paypal and then you wont be warm this month..

I've been ripped off over $3,500 on Paypal. Avoid it for all people to people trades as MUCH as possible. The only time I use paypal is for things less then $100 now days.

my girlfriend mostly uses the paypal. i really had no idea which was the default. but regaurdless i was expecting it to ask which account i wantred it to use. infact it also didnt ask which address i wanted the item shipped to. being i have 3 addresses.

question remains. how can you manage to charge someones account 20 dollars but not the original 8 dollars. luckily my bank doesnt charge nsf fees.

i got my sticker today. installed it in the dark. pics tomorrow!

although ebay and paypal can be credited with revolutionizing the way we shop online, i choose not to support them... although you may find a bargain on some things here and there, it just feels like taxation with representation... granted i know its not "taxes," but it sure does feel like it...

and yes i know they're a business and need to take a share of your sale, same with real life auctioneers, but the way they run things makes me very uncomfortable...

back when ebay was in its heyday, they were great, now they're just an online conglomerate... with the amount of people you are able to effectively reach, they don't care what they charge you cause most people will still pay... but, paypal and ebay can still make you a lot of money, those infommercials you see about "power selling" and making a fortune on ebay are true if you get incredibly lucky at it and stay solid

i am 100 percent comfortable with craigslist.org and have yet to meet a single freak on there when meeting up to make a purchase/sell an item

If we were giving representation to go with the taxation then I think we'd be called New England now.

I've been using Paypal consistently for the last seven years, and have yet to encounter a problem.

There's Google Checkout now, a lot of places are starting to use it.

take off the 3 accounts you dont use and the other address. Funny, i always see people complain about paypal that it puts "taxes" on transfers but i havent seen any of those.

You probably got charged NSF on the bank side too... better clear that out, else you will get charged every week (well, depends on the bank and thier T&C - Terms and Conditions).

As for the charges on all your Paypal accounts, seriously man, you need to call and talk to someone. I dont know about you but money doesnt grow on trees nowadays (or any other day). DEMAND for an explanation, and dont let it go lightly until you are completely satisfied.

Edit: (For such reasons, I do the following:)
- I usually review my online transactions over, and over and over again,
- take screenshots of the orders in addition to
- saving the confirmation page to cutePDF.

Been using Paypal for over 7 years and have never ever had a problem. Just a matter of making sure that all cards and accounts are valid. Why do people make a mistake and then complain so much when they are inconvenienced as a result of that?

why do people like you make the mistake of opening your mouth before you read what happened. here ill give you an example of something you missed: "paypal didnt ask me which bank account/credit card to use"

about 3 people verified this..

thanks for trying to be a badass with your "i never have problems cause im perfect."
