hope you have insurance! i hate phones w/track balls, but I love my G1! Should fall under warranty...

not sure if this will help on the g1 but whenever the trackball on my mighty mouse gets messed up I take a paper towel, dampen it lightly with water, then run the trackball over it for a while in every possible direction. fixes it every time

if you get too much oil on the trackball, it can potentially transfer to the internal tracking mechanism and cause certain directions not to be read, the paper towel + water trick is meant to remove the oils

use this method at your own risk

This happened on my sidekick ID before, what u can try is to blow real hard on the trackball, than give it a spin, and blow agian. Usually theres a lil piece of lint or something that gets it there. Try this, it should work.

A simple method I found recently is to turn the phone upside down and move the ball rapidly in all directions.

I did this and the dirt that had got into the mechanism popped straight back out after a few moments.

I had that happen and fixed it- here's what i did:

Turn phone off.

If you have a can of compressed air, great. Get it. If not, get a small straw like a coffee stirrer.. something you can blow air through.

Lay on the floor or you bed, hold G1 above you w trakball facing down.

Press (click) the trackball all the way IN and put the straw or air can right up to the edges/sides of the ball. Blow air in there, around all the edges.

See if its working better..

If not, then do the same thing agian, but roll the ball around while keeping it pressed in and blowing air into the edges.

Keep doing this until its working better.

As a last resort get some Isoprop. Alcohol and a Qtip, wet the Qtip and moisten the trakball with alcohol- and roll it around.

Keep doing these things and with some luck whatever's stuck in there will either move, dissolve, or come out.

** I dont recommend using water- it leaves residue.

Yeah... it's also nonvolatile so it could stay in there long enough to damage the electronics.

Is this not just a hardware problem and will be covered even if you dont have insurance? Im still under the 1 year warranty and dont wanna mention the trackwheel to get the phone replaced if they are going to just say no

i dont think it should be water. alcohol works better with trackballs. previous sidekick owners should know... it is extremely frustrating and i wish you luck with that.
