View Full Version : New take on battery life

After some experimentation it really appears the battery and phone aren't completely to blame for their own short life. I have found that if I reboot the phone and simply use basic included features in the OS, the battery lasts much longer than if I had used 3rd party apps that day. The OS seems to do a good job juggling background apps as far as performance is concerned but they seem to still be sucking too much juice (the ones that have no purpose to be running in the background like games and other single use utilities). This is another reason why I would really like to see a handy task manager application. That might be easier said than done while trying to kill processes and keep the system stable.

Yea, that is true. When reboot my phone in the morning and dont run any apps, I can stay til noon and get 90% charge left. Compared to when I use somethings (gmail, games, settings, browser, youtub, etc...) I get to 82% at around the same time. I keep my brightness on at the lowest.

App Killer is def needed.

I also hear the RC29 update helps with battery. Have you gotten yours yet?

I am on RC29 and I am at 43 hours on this charge and I have 27% battery remaining. I always charge at about 15% and I generally charge overnight. It is as good as my pearl was at this point and I am not babying it at all. Lots of app use and GPS and 3G are on at all times.

battery still sucks and I don't care what u say. It's 2008 I'm watching 60 mins and it's about people that can't move but they came out with a think that can read your mind so it then say what your thinking. So why can't they cone out with a ever lasting battery?

I did the manual download for 3 phones, and we all noticed a battery difference; what I also noticed is if I turn off the phone at least once during the day, to close apps running in the background it helps. I don't keep wifi on or bluetooth unless I need. I have not changed the backlight. I charge at night also, and I can last until 5pm, but I usually will recharge before my train ride home.

I have RC29, have ran the battery out completely twice to try to "train" it, and the battery still sucks. I had about 30 min of phone calls, had about 10 texts, 5 emails, downloaded 2 apps, and my battery was dead in about 4 hours. I also had no wifi or gps on. It is the worst battery ever. I signed that petition on this forum so I really hope they send us out better batteries.

hey guys if you turn off the auto-sync for your contacts then your battery life will improve dramatically, if you alter your contacts from your phone it does a force sync anyway so it's no big deal.

the frequency for the contact syncing is extremely low, or at least it is for me.

30 mins? That`s worse than buying a fake Nokia battery on ebay!
Before and after update, my battery still handles 3 hrs of talk time non stop.

Current battery life: 33%

after
twelve hours of on-time,
three hours of talk,
half an hour of using the map application,
playing poker for an hour,
and another half hour of web-surfing.

All on EDGE, GPS and 3G turned off. All syncing turned off. Screen at lowest brightness.

And,

I got the update about an hour into the day.

wow just took my g1 off the charger and browse 1 site for like 2 mins and I'm already at 83% WTF . But then I noticed I have the use 2g networks unchecked and the gps satellites enable . But still WTF . One more thing should I have data roaming off and should I have all the data synchronization checked? Would that help the battery ?

Sorry guys, I'm going to have to call bull on this one.

43 hours sounds crazy to me, but so does 4 if you aren't using the thing constantly. I'm able to text on and off all day, normally about a hundred or so, make a few calls, and still browse and check whatever else. Default brightness, wifi and gps off unless needed. Edge only as no 3G in my area. My battery lasts until I go to bed. Hideously unscientific measurement mind you, but training my battery just once did make a world of difference.

Turning off just the contacts autosync has a noteworthy effect? If the frequency is really low, why does it affect the battery so much?

It's been nearly 3 hours, and my battery is at 94%. I've been listening to my last.fm program music, I have wireless on, and I am using the web browser. I also have the RC29 update. Before, with RC19 3 hours of the same usage would have drained my battery to 50%.

I have never had a problem with my battery, I charge it every other day. Now I don't have 3G in my area so that must be a big drain but I do have wifi on all the time and do some surfing and some texting but mostly just phone calls.

It's very simple......

If you are not using internet or downloading apps, place the phone into "2G only mode". Why do you need 3G all the time? Apps such as the GMail and IM can cope fine on GPRS and whilst all the other functions are fine offline.

I can stretch my G1 over 3 days with moderate use on phone calls/text messages with 3G off. I can only imagine the code is not effeicient enough with the 3G chip, that's why I can only get 1 day out of the G1 with G3 on all the time.

I guess there's a bonus that the battery can charge up from very low to full in just over an hour....

I installed the Dev Tools yesterday and have "Show processes" checked so I can see what's running at all times.

It appears that the FBook app runs constantly even when you haven't started it since last reboot. I uninstalled it and will see today if it makes an appreciable difference on battery life.

It runs as a service and is super-annoying. i.e. it has no option to not autosync... I've removed it as well.

My battery life is OK. I carry around my charger with me. I found its a little better now that I have RC230 and I keep GPS off. My BT is always on since I use it. I only notice a real drain after I get off the phone after talking over 30mins.

Same here, fBook is a HUGE drain on my battery, even with 3G and wifi and GPS and things off, it was hard to make it through a single 12hr day on a full charge.

Been testing the past few days and removing it has easily doubled the lifespan. Easily lasts the entire day without dipping below 50.

Shouldn't logging out of the fbook app be enough for it to not auto sync since you are no longer logged into it?
