I have seen many posts on many forums regarding the "chin" on the G1/Dream, and most of them are negative. I, on the other hand, can see at least one reason why developers would do such a thing...

I currently use an unlocked Nokia E61 on T-Mobile. I love the phone, but have always liked a phone with a slideout keyboard. So, why have I been using an E61???...because it is damn near impossible to hold a phone with a slideout keyboard with one hand (e.g. HTC Tytn II). Sure, you can get used to it, but those types of phones don't fit in your hand, like the G1 WILL...

I think one of the reasons for the design of the "chin'" is to battle such a complaint regarding a phone with a slideout keyboard. Now I am not saying that this is the only reason why, but I think it is a damn GOOD reason, if you look at it from a ergonomic point of view...ok, maybe with one exception to the ergonomics, the "chin" isn't aesthetically pleasing. But, if I am looking at it correctly, I think one of the reasons why I do purchase a G1 is because I will be able to hold it in one hand comfortably.

We could go into how the "chin" along with other features of the phone work together, but if anyone is thinking the way I am, you have already come to your own conclusions. The purpose of this thread is to voice my opinion and shed some light on one postive reason for the creation of the "chin" of the T-Mobile G1 in the midst of all of the negative ones out there...good thing we'll be able to find out soon.

For now, lets see what the polls have to say on the eve of the T-Mobile G1 Official Announcement!

I'd rather have just a flat surface there, but at least it will have more downforce when I throw it.

I stopped throwing phones when I got rid of my Nextel Blackberry 7520...although I do think my Nokia E61 is very durable, I would never throw it. I am not sure how well the G1 will hold up if you throw it.

Hmmmm...maybe the "chin" was designed with throwing the device in mind? It might come back to your like a boomerrang :p

i completely agree with the thread starter. after having a sidekick lx, which is thinner as you all probably know, it seemed harder to have a grip on it with one hand if i was in the middle of a text and wanted to do something else. i think the chin is a great idea, and won't bother those who are against it after they get their hands on it. just goes to show they had the consumer in mind while making it. it may not be as aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but this phone is all about function, is it not?

I will probably like the functionality of it, but I dont how it makes the phone look. It wouldnt be so bad if they didnt round the edges so it was so obvious even when the phone is closed.

If those edges weren't rounded, it wouldn't be comfortable in your hand. The only thing I can see bad about the chin is giving case designers hell on the drawing table. I also can see those buttons on the chin getting in the way of using the G1 one-handed without accidentally pressing those buttons or moving the trackball.

***if the edges on the screen side of the chin weren't rounded, it would look better, but still not be as comfortable with them being rounded. The "chin," no matter how you look at it, is not asthetically pleasing.

I like the feature of the trackball for sure but the chin piece DOES get in a way of typing.

I feel the same way. But I think I can get used to it. This is my first phone w/keyboard, so the chin thingy kinda felt "in the way". The trackball more than makes up for it though. I love that lil' bastard! :D

The "chin" allows you to stand the G1 on a horizontal surface (like a desk) with its back against a vertical surface (like a wall)

It's actually only to please the Crimson Chin.
