I had my handset fully charged at 9am yesterday and was web browsing occasionally and it was basically dead by 2pm...is this normal??

using 3g is a lot like talk time because it uses the radio and screen the entire time you are browsing also the 3g radio is a lot more power hungry than the edge radios were, keep in mind that the signal strength or amount of bars you have can also cause better or worse battery life because if your signal is weak the radio will have to work harder to aquire a signal which requires more battery power. short answer yes

p.s. also try adjusting backlight brightness and shut off time to get better battery life

It will improve. I am up to over 2 days now with regular usage. My regular use may be more or less than most, I would think more.

I tried 3G on all day, lasted me 6:45am to 6pm. Brightness was at low (I can see just fine with it there). Wireless and GPS was off as I've heard those were power hungry. Its pretty decent. My sidekick used to last me 24 hours with the edge.... so I could imagine it'd be alot less IF it had 3G.

If you are still having problems after 4 days, even after you have calibrated it - you should get a new one while your 14 grace period is still active.

I used to shut off 3g and GPS to save battery but I have found this to be unnecessary after a week of use of the phone and killing the battery completely twice Its lasting alot longer

you should though set brightness to a low as you can bear to use (around 30-40% seems good to me during the day)

having brightness on max and the screen on alone will kill the battery very quickly!!

shut off the auto sync functions so your phone will go into sleep mode correctly and not kill the battery while its not in use

lastly turn off wifi and bluetooth if your not using them

i can go a full day of normal use and when i get home i have anywhere from 50-30% left

bought it last night at 6pm, came 100%, lower brightness all the way, turned off auto sync, got home, browsed, downloaded, text from 10pm to 12pm on wife, battery is now at 10% as of 11 am this morning

I have to say, i read a lot of people griping about the battery, so i must be the lucky batch.

Like everyone said, it depends on your settings and what you have toggled on, i.e. gps, wifi. I usually charge my phone around early evening and can last till noon/early afternoon of the next day. This is with browsing, texting, calling, scanning every barcode within reach... I guess I got lucky with my battery too.

You guys might find this interesting regarding battery life. May require further investigation...

My wife and I both pre-ordered the G1 and got them on the same day. She's been complaining about battery life, so I told her to turn off GPS, Wi-fi, blah blah blah - all the tips and tricks. Still, her phone was dead by 4pm every day, even without a lot of use.

So I thought I'd try a little experiment. I charged both of our phones all night, switched her battery into my phone (I haven't been having any issues with battery) and then I made sure all the settings were EXACTLY the same (screen brightness and timeout, GPS off, etc.) Turned both music players on, set to repeat album, and by 1pm, she was down to 7% battery while mine still had 58% battery.

CLEARLY, there is something about her phone that is causing higher usage of the battery, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what. the only difference is that she has gotten the RC29 update while mine is still RC19, but she was having these battery issues long before the update.

Two notes: she has the bronze G1 and mine is black. Her phone runs hotter than mine.

To those who are having battery issues...black or bronze?

With moderate usage, mine wont even last a day(starting at 9am). I have to charge it in the middle of the day, everyday. I hate it, I think the battery is the weakest part of the phone. It's hard to enjoy the phone when you're constantly worrying about the battery dieing.

The difference could be how each of you is using it. Have you tried charging both fully and then running them side by side doing the exact same tasks with the same settings to see how the battery drain compares?

I get about 15 hours. I was told by the T-Mo salesperson to condition the battery by letting it die all the way, charge it for 5 minutes, let it die again, and then charging fully. This seemed to work for me.

I also turn off wi-fi when not using it, I tweaked the settings for screen brightness like someone else mentioned, about to 30%.

After discharging my battery completely twice, my phone went to 82% after 14 hours of moderate use. I also gave the brightness all the way down, and 2g only on. I was one of the one to complain about the battery when I first got the phone getting about 3-4 tops of moderate use.

I've discharged it completely twice and am now recharging it...I'll see how it goes.

If I use it, I'm lucky to have more then 20 percent in 7 hours. I have wifi, gps, off and use only 2g on.

One day at work (after charging the phone all night) I had wifi networks (i work in a place that offers paid at&t wifi, that I think it kept trying to join) and locale (i've decided that program maybe a battery destroyer.) running, within four hours and not using the phone AT ALL! It was down to 10 percent. That is NOT acceptable.

This phone has minor inconveniences, that can be fixed. But this battery life is not even close to functionable. Its my biggest and most vocal complaint. Something needs to be done.

its bronze; I was wondering that. I noticed yesterday it was running hot. That was the first time I noticed it though. I pulled the battery out, and let it cool down. I wonder why this is, the difference in the colors working this way.

Some days are good and some are bad. Have yet to go a hole day without having to charge at some point. Does anybody else feel there's is getting extremely hot sometimes while charging and sometimes after long use:confused:

my battery life has been spectacular. I am now back to only charging it at night. I have had 3G and GPS on all week and when im at home i have WiFi enabled. I do a lot of browsing especially on this site, and i listen to music, im always searching for apps, and watching youtube videos. Sure at the end of the day im in the teens when it comes to battery life yet but it hasnt died on me since i intentionally ran the battery out. Nice job HTC.

If you dont need Wifi on then turn it off especially while driving. With WiFi on your phone will constantly search for nearby networks, and while you're driving it will try to communicate with any wifi network you pass by. For those of you who dont know wifi and bluetooth while different in use are quite similar in technology. They use radio frequencies similar to those 2.4GHZ cordless phones you may still have around the house. What that means is if you have both on then you're really using three different radios on your phone. Now imagine walking around with three am/fm radios in your pocket mated to that high res screen and all powered by that little tiny battery and you understand why this device cant last as long as some of you want it to.
As far as GPS i havent noticed that to be any kind of drain at all. GPS only works when i launch certain apps and after retrieving the data it needs it turns back off. If you are noticing GPS to be a drain be sure to see what apps you have open. If you're not sure what apps you have open and you want to close everything you can always power it down and then power it back on.

Glad to see a lot of you are getting much better battery life.
