My orig g1 must have been a beta testers g1, the way it felt compared to the one I got saturday in the mail... its like 2 different g1s... and the trackball feels better. More like the blackberry
Happy for you man, enjoy it.

Where was the squeaky sounds coming from on your phone? Was it where the hinge is?
I'm thinking about asking for a replacement also. I got mine a week ago so I'm still within my 14 days and want the best quality.

When the keyboard was open and if I tapped the screen for. Any reason it would squeak.. when the screen is closed and tapped the screen it squeaked... the hinge felt loose, when it opened it wasn't as smooth gliding as my replacement... typing on the keyboard would make the old one squeak.

You have to expect the hinge to loosen up a bit over time. As long as its not extreme, you should be happy/ok.

I will rephrase... it seemed like the phone was passed around prior to release date either at the warehouse in la grange or in taiwan... it seemed realy wore in.. like an old stocking cap, or an old. Pair of sneakers.

My screen now "over closes" by a small amount. It's loose, squeeks, wobbles, and now it closes past flush with the edge! Yippee! Time to bring it back to the T-Mo store tomorrow.
I like the Android OS but the phone is mechanically, garbage.

Have you ever owned a phone that had a sliding mechanism before? All phones that ive seen do this. It never stays as tight as it initially is. How far past the edge are you talking about?

I have a squeaky phone as well. I just called customer care and they guy I talked to put me on hold and said would check his G1 and another employees to see if theirs did the same thing. He came back saying that both of the phones he checked did the same thing and it was normal for the phone to make a creaking noise. So, he wouldn't let me do an exchange.

it is not normal.. send it back and say you want a new g1 and also send a sim card... thats what i did, and mine is perfect

It has to be normal, it literally happens to every phone I think. It slides out, theres now way its gonna stay perfect.. I think everybody is overreacting. I think every thread I read involves somebody talking about returning theirs for a new one.

im thinking the first batch of g1 that was shipped out was possibly a trial one... when i traded my phone in at the store, my phone is more durable and sleek.. no squeaking or anything.. just the letter d and f are slightly slanted..
The first G1 I had I kept for 9 days til the back cover started popping up quite a bit on the sides. That one didnt squeak and the screen was rock solid on it, but the back cover annoyed me enough to return it.
The 2nd phone I got started squeaking after 3 days and the screen became extremely loose on it, and I wasnt hard on the phone at all. Also the Menu button was mooshy and sometimes didnt seem to click, so I returned that one today.
While in there today, I had the guy open up a few different boxes today checking through the phones, all of them seemed to have quite a few imperfections to them, either that the screens would come loose soon, back covers not clickin onto the sides, keys on the keyboard pressed in further then they should be, etc. I ended up picking the one with the least imperfections (d, f and r key are pressed in a little far, and kinda slanted) and hope it will hold together better then the other 2 did, as today was the last day for my buyers remorse period.
I dont think construction on any of the G1's are on par with most other phones I've owned, in fact I never once had a phone replaced out of 6 cell phones, but I really like the phone enough to stick with it and hope for the best ;p

My g1 creeks but its not really a big deal...for now lol. I got my g1 in a trade so I guess sending it in would be out of the question.

Mine also squeaks when I touch the screen, and when open the screen it has a little movement.Im sure if we really try we could pick apart alot of phones that have moving parts. I was going to wait for the second addition because I new there would be issues, but I couldn't wait. I'll give this one to my son and buy the new one. Problem solved ??

Yes as long as you have it on t-mobile record that you have the G1.
You will be able to send it to them for a replacement if you have any problems.

just to clarify this statement, you have the be the FIRST recorded/registered user of the phone... if someone pops in there simcard and uses the phone for a good amount of time and it logs it on their account, the warranty on the phone will only be valid on that phone number...
warranties do not transfer from one account to the next after initial use of the phone

HOME SOLUTION TO THE CREAKING SITUATION: 1 small piece of Electrical Tape!!!
I've had a replacement phone for about a month now. It started very nice...no squeaks. Now, I noticed that the hinge wears a little, which creates a little bit of space for the screen to rock and "squeak" when the phone is closed. I put something together that is working so far:
SOLUTION: Use black electrical tape to fill in the worn edges. You will need to cut a thin piece about 2cm wide and about 1/2 inch long. Notice a "track" on the bottom of the screen where the Hinge runs during opening and closing. At the very END of the track is where you will place the thin piece of TAPE. Where the corner of the screen and where the edge meets the beginning of the Hinge track is where you begin placing the tape. Put the middle of your tape at the corner. Then firmly press down the tape on the outside edge of the phone. The trick now is securing the tape on the inside of the hinge. I recommend a butter knife to get into the hinge track and press the tape down on the inside of the hinge (you can't do this with your hands alone)
Once this small strip of tape is applied to the hinge, you will notice less movement of the phone while closed, and also little to NO SQUEAKING! Don't worry about the tape on the inside hinge falling off...the mere motion of the phone closing on the tape will secure it in place for a while.
I recommend a clear shell casing over the g1 phone...this will provide the best protection for your phone.
I hope this helps.

See Pictures of home remedy. Note that the electrical tape is barely noticeable. In my clear case, the tape is protected from exposure and wear. My phone used to squeak like a pirate ship wooden plank. It is now considerably diminished.

Electrical tape worked for me also, just a small piece inside the track opening on the screen where it meets the nub on the "chin".
