Ok first off I trolled the posts made about how to get the manual update on your sd card. I D/L ed the correct file not the test build some links have, and saved it to my 8gb card via card reader named it update.zip and put it on the with the other folders, while manually rebooting the phone to force update here is the error message I get.

Installing from sdcard......

Finding update package............

Opening update package............

E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad)

Installation aborted

Press Home + Back to reboot

Everyone else is saying this worked fine for them what is going on?
This is a brand new 8GB sandisk card??

ANy help would be appreciated. tired of being stuck with RC 19 build

Did you download it from the google servers?

Did you try to download the file again? Sometimes I get corrupt "completed" downloads...

try renaming the file as "update" and taking off ".zip". I think a few users have reported success with this.

Windows usually hides the .zip, so if you renamed it update.zip that means windows might have really made it update.zip.zip

Just name it update, if it still shows the zip file icon then this is what you want. I have my computer show me all extensions, this eliminates this problem.

im using my macbook to transfer the file so I dont think that is the issue, I was reading other forums and there are many combinations to this problem , some were saying it was because their SD card needed to be formatted a certain way and other were saying it was based on the file extension. I can tell you i have d/led the file from multiple locations on the web, made sure its the right build, tried naming it just update and also just update.zip and nothing is working, i have been trolling the other web site I listed because they seem to have a lot of devs, programmers, hackers posting imporant info on there. The only other persona i was reading about that was having the exact same problem as me resolved it by not using his card reader to transfer the update from his comp to his sd card, rather he just used the drag and drop method with the usb cable provided with the G1, and yes I tried that also and it did not work.. , this is going to sound really lame but how do I format my SD card from the fat 32 its at right now from factory to fat 16??

in light of all of this, maybe you should wait until you receive the OTA. you'll receive it soon enough. :)

in the mist of all this going on I was still trying the anycut method... meaning there was a thread posted on this site a while ago highlighting how with anycut to use a shortcut to the device manager of sorts that lets you into the backdoor of the UI to manually purge the to see if the update is available.. I had been trying this before but no luck, then as i was writing the last post bam..it picked up the new update and started downloading it lol life is too funny

For reference- you probably will not be able to format the card as FAT16 as it has a size limit of 2GB- unless you want to forgo the other 6GB of storage.

I have never had any luck with transferring files from MacOS; if I make any changes (such as renaming it) some hidden attribute always seems to change and I can never open it under Windows. Not sure what it is, but I just gave up downloading non-Mac stuff on my Mac Mini.

I am still stuck with RC19, too. But don't fret, some have said that RC29 is not that awesome anyways...it keeps giving them connection problems of some kind. :(
