Can you use a regular mini-usb cable to connect the G1 to a computer for mounting the flash drive? Or do you have to use the special cable that came with it in the box? The old style usb cable seems to fit, but I'm not sure if it is OK to try?

it will work fine.

yea it'll work just remember to go into Settings > SD card & phone storage > and enable Use for USB storage
