Memory Upgrade w/o Update

So i get the G1 load some apps on it, the first week, about 10 of them, memory is about 38 MB, then my G1 gets real slow, so I do a Factory Default Reset, I clear the cache, history, and cookies and everything is running great, I have about 20 apps on it now, i clear my history, etc and now my memeory has 56 MB. I did not recieve any updates yet! can someone explain how I now have more memory with more apps?

When you clear your internet cache you will get a good bit of space back.

everything being equal i cleared both times and before the reset it 38 MB with 10 apps versus after the reset 20 apps and 56 MB!
