I really do enjoy my G1... in fact I'm poating from it right now. The keyboard is great and the screen is one of the best touch screens I've used.
However, the phone is extremely flimsy. After only a week of moderate use, my screen feels like its about to fall off. When the screen is closed, any light pressure on the top left or bottom of the phone gives extreme play. The screen also gives a lot of play when pressed horizontally left. When open, any pressure on the top of the screen is enough to bend the screen about 5 mm.
My usb cover also feels like its about to fall off whenever I have it opened.
And perhaps my biggest gripe of all. The battery cover squeaks whenever any pressure is applied to its surface around the camera button. Just holding the phone in my hand and adjusting my grip on it is enough to cause a pretty noticable squeak.

I love the phone... but really HTC, this thing is made like a piece of crap.

Anyone else have similar problems or perhaps a remedy for any of them?

I agree with the OP, My G1 does the same thing, except for the back piece. The Wing has a more solid feel. The MDA had the same feel as this phone. Doesn't matter though i could never go back to the Wing after using the G1! I hope the G2 is a little more sturdy, kind of like the Wing felt after having the MDA.

Question is, for all of you who already have the G1 -- Do you think it will hold up for two years of use??

Will it hold up? Yea.. but only if you're careful. Probably only if you use some sort of case.. and even then it might end up with some very creaky parts, and perhaps a slightly offset screen. I mean hell... it's only been a week and I'm already using a tiny wad of toilet paper to keep my battery cover from creaking.

I think it will hold up fine, but then I'm pretty careful with my gadgets.. If its not in use, it is in a case..

The question is how many people actually wait until the end of their 2yr. contract to upgrade? I've had a different phone every year... always looking for the next best thing.

I'd be pissed if I dropped mine.. Still thinking of getting the added protection plan, just in case...

I am the same way - I keep my gadgets pretty neat when it comes to care. I do not recognize the G1 phone in the above comment.

it sucks cause two nights ago, i was hammered drunk and it didnt leave my pocket and i made sure that it didnt come out.

then last night, sober as a bird, driving my friends to a party, i go to get out of the car and thought it was in my pocket, but it was really sitting on my lap...it flew out of the car and landed in the street! i was like NOOOOO

If you know how to take care of your devices, they will all last you way more than two years. I love my G1 and have only one small issue. The back battery cover has a small amount of flex. Other than that, no problems.

Remove your battery cover.

Then put it back on correctly.

"flimsy" back problem solved.

Yea its a really poor design by htc. Also don't u hate when your typeing something say your posting something then all of sudden your typeing a url bc u acendently hit something. Nothing always think the phone buttion is the home menu button but it turns it off. I just hope tmo let's me upgrade to g2 at a fair price for what we got for g1. Arrrrr its a pain to type on ac

Wow...did you just say one of the features you don't like on the phone is that it does something you don't want it to when you make a mistake?

Yeah...that's a rough one. I wish there was an app that automatically corrected all of my screw ups when using the phone.

Probably a paid app.

I'll wait.

Some of you people just seem to be downies that like to buy things then complain about them. This is a pretty soild phone man, and its heavy too so the fact that your saying your G1 is flimsy means are you sure you got a G1 and not a G WannaBE? I've dropped this phone 2 times for fun and its like a brick nothings wrong with it some scratchs on it but thats to be expected, or maybe you just have bad luck with phones.

Either way i really enjoy the phone and am not having any problems with it at all.

Try not to squeeze your phone so hard all the time.
Perhaps you may wanna invest in a teddy bear? :D

The design and layout of the of the phone is excellent, but the engineering tolerance of the hinge is too "loose". I have creaky screen syndrome as well, and the screen moves about 3 mm up and down in the top left corner. The quality of the keys could be better, but I dig the rollerball and 4 buttons. Also the menu button needs to have better action and more travel.
