I don't think its ugly but it looks like its going to be unconformable typing because the right side is raised and the left isn't

I don't understand that either. I think the design is awesome and it'll fit great in my hands. Although, I must admit that it's still far from looking as beautiful as any Apple product :)

.

Looks don't matter in the long run... if you are switching from one WinMo to another WinMo, then it better be of better design to keep you happy for a weak coz the underlying OS is the same... since android is a new OS for everyone, they'll be so much immersed in playing around with it that they won't be bothered by the design.... But subsequent android phones better have stunning looks.

I think when people look at this phone, they tend to refer to iphone. Surely the G1 doesn't look as good as an iphone, but then again what other competing companies can match any of their products in term of looks (laptop, mp3 players, monitor, iphone, etc.).

I think the G1 looks good. For me the function is more important. Even if you have a good looking phone, who is going to care?

The same would go for a car though.. Practicality yes, but if it looked like a box on wheels would you drive it? Probably not. Plus the amount of money you spend on a phone is around $400 to $500 for a decent one full price... So I can see why some including myself want it to look excellent for an investment in something that can be dropped and broken in seconds..

But we cannot even say the phone is going to look like it has in leaked photos, but I still worry! lol

I don't think it's the best looking phone but I also don't think it's the worst looking phone either.

What I don't get is why people saying it's the worst looking phone HTC ever made and it does not look like HTC made it?

Take a look at the Wing and other HTC phones in the past. None of them look that great either.

I will say this, considering the phones they are making now and in the future, they could have done better on the G1 design.

I really don't care that much about the looks of the phone. Besides this phone has the Android OS and it will be the best phone to get.

Well, I have seen the difference in typing between the Tmobile Wing and Tmobile MDA - both did the job - it was just the different side how the keyboard is being open. Is this going to upset me because I have to worry about right side and not the left one? Not really ... I AM GETTING THAT PHONE - PERIOD!!! :)

Ask yourself this, do you serve of the phone or does the phone serve you?

In either case, however way the phone may look, its a matter of opinions. Everyone is entitled to what they think of the phone.

as a designer i do think the phone is a bit uggly compared to other ones in the market OTHER THEN the iphone.

for instance... the xperia x1, or the htc pro touch... or even the diamond?

don't take me wrong, the phone has awesome features BUT in terms of design it is still not there yet!

it looks like an old cheap plastic phone from the dollar store...

they had the money to do better... they are just rushing :)

It reminds me so much of a Sidekick which is great because the keyboard is very similar.

It's missing one thing that's stopping people from calling it a sidekick 5 and would make it look a lot better IMO.

5 second sloppy paint job. It would look a lot better if it had something like that but more buttons are unnecessary.

Nothing is perfect, but I have mine on order. If something nicer comes out a year or two from now, I can always get that. Either way, I'll probably keep this one in my collection that I started in the Bag Phone days! LOL

Honestly I think they're pretty ugly, but it's what's on the inside that counts!

I really, really wish it would have been modeled after one of the HTC Touch series phones, but I'm more interested in the OS than how it looks. HTC builds quality phones. The Wing was a big improvement over the MDA even though the hardware was basically the same. It took a while to get used to the backwards keyboard sliding that the Wing had compared to the MDA, though.

While it's not the prettiest of phones, it's not all that ugly. If I remember reading correctly, it was not designed by HTC. It might have been designed by Tmo or Google

First off, looks are completely opinion based. Second, there is no reason to have a 'pretty' looking phone, or computer for that matter. A phone a tool used for communication, nothing more. Its not a fashion accessory, its not a purse or a pair of shoes. Its a phone. How many times to you see people going, "well i want to buy this hacksaw because the handle matches my hammers handle" ? Nobody, because you buy a hacksaw based on price and quality. However you see people buying a phone that matches their car or their laptop all the time. I don't think electronics should be this way.

Digital cameras, for example, have been coming in a multitude of colors for the past few years to attract stupid buyers. Good quality cameras, high-end point and shoot and digital SLR cameras, are all still coming in black or silver or just plain black only. What does this tell us? what am i getting at? Looks don't mean anything to professional people who want something useful that will save them time and money and make their lives easier, let them get more done, etc... Good quality items don't have to be stylish for smart people to buy them, just look at Volvo.

I see the fact that apple and Sony makes all their items extra glossy and pretty as weakness because it will inflate the price for no good reason. To me, it looks like they're trying to attract stupid buyers by making things extra shiny and nice looking so that people will buy it because its 'cute' or 'sexy' which isn't what the item is actually meant to be for. I would much rather buy electronics based on components and how well it functions, not what it looks like. I feel like if more buyers were like me, we'd have alot better electronic gadgets coming from all the companies because they'd all be competing in that area. Instead, companies are now competing more in the style arena instead of the specs and quality arena and i just don't see this as good for the consumer at all. JMO please don't castrate me. Thx.

Skatt, I drive a 2005 Scion xb and it looks like a box on wheels! (haha had to comment on that)

As for the looks of the phone, they wanted to make the phone stand-out which it does, but not for the same reasons as the IPhone. On top of that they wanted to make it affordable, its probably the best look HTC would give them for the prices!

hawtseks - I agree with you, but there are a huge number of people that prefer looks over functionality. It just depends on the person. A lot of girls would like a pretty pink phone, while tech geeks *cough* like us *cough* would prefer an ugly phone that has a lot of nice features. Someone else might just want a phone that has great camera quality, others might want one that plays music well, just depends what you want.

I think Google/T-Mobile/HTC were well-aware that the people that would be most excited about the G1 were gadget-freaks that are more concerned with the immense functionality it gives, and not so much about it's looks. Google also likes to keep things simple, and the design for the G1 is quite simple. Then there's the aspect that T-Mobile specific phones are usually uglier than their counterparts on other carriers (IMO). Examples: MDA, SDA, Wing...compared to the 8525, etc

LMAO I needed that!

But as for the phone I am slowly taking a liking to it now.. I just wish the screen was flush with the rest of the sliding screen area.. Let spots for dirt and dust to get stuck in.

I think the phone looks fine. I don't think it is ugly. The white one does look pretty sweet but I opted for the black one.

The iphone might look more appealing visually, but not functionally. I'm excited and can't wait to get this phone!

Yeah I had a hard time with the looks of the Dream before it was released, but the finalized black color looks slick to me. The functions of the phone make it look a hell of a lot better too.

I think it all goes back to personal preference, some thinks blackberry is the coolest phone ever and iphone is just too kiddie for them.
